Randy Randolph Plane Kits?

I'm having trouble finding much of a selection of small kits and am considering trying my hand at kit manufacturing. I have always admired designs by Randy Randolph and am wondering if anyone here is in communication with his family.

Well first, go to selecthobbies.com, our resident small old plane guy would be BobHH, but there are lots of plans, not so much kits,,we are a dying breed, but hanging on with every scrap we can find!!....welcome...Rog

There are members of Randy's old club in Dallas, Texas that hang out here who may still be in touch with his wife.
I think most of Randy's designs ended up with one or other of the magazines.

I like most of the Randolph designs I've seen and have built a couple of them. Wish I could have met him.

I have never had the skill to build well enough to build anything from plans , I only ever tried the most basic designs I could find , with unsatisfactory results.

I have always liked his models , and also wish I could have met hiim. Our sport is much the lesser for his loss , as with many great modelers that have passed.

These guys sell laser cut parts for 4 or 5 of Randy's kits. He doesn't offer plans, basically just sells parts after someone sends him plans for him to cut their parts, then has the CAD on file if anyone else wants them too. Or, at least it keeps the lawyers away.

Most of the plans Randy published that you are looking for are now copyrighted by the magazines that published them. So kitting them would more likely require talking to the magazines and not Randy's family.

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful advice and suggestions.

I have talked to several people on this issue and most have told me that the magazines usually direct requests such as this to the modeler or his family. They usually suggest starting with the original designer.

It so happens that I have access to everything needed to manufacture kits. I just need a few good plans from a well known designer with permission to manufacture the kits. Perhaps a family friend will see the thread and provide some insight on whether the family would be receptive to the idea.

RE: Randy Randolph Plane Kits?

Does anyone know if there was a list of the Randolph plans? Did he have his own plan service? Ibought a stand off scale Mooney for .10 engine on ebay a year ago that turned out to by by Randy and modified in 2008 by him but Ionly got sheet 1 of the 2 sheet drawing. Page 2 was the templates. That got me to wondering if he had a plan service as this one was not in any magazine (at least not at that time) so Iwondered if he had his own plan service too.

Does anyone know if there was a list of his work? Ihave checked MAN and FM as well as one or two others but have not seen anything other than what appeared in their respective magazine.

Thank you.

But "usually" doesn't mean "always". I'd still contact Model Airplane News to both confirm this situation as well as to see if they have a contact for the Randolph family.

He also had many published in MA...Onestep, Nickle, Dime, and several others. A complete list would be nice but I don't know of one.

Here's a link to a thread on RCG about a search for the Twilighter and Twilighter II. Some plans are shown.

Randy Randolph did so much to keep small RC modeling alive when it was completely out of fashion. If there is an aircraft modeler's Pantheon he deserves a statue in a niche.

Most of the plans Randy published that you are looking for are now copyrighted by the magazines that published them. So kitting them would more likely require talking to the magazines and not Randy's family.
It would depend upon what rights were purchased. A lot of times, magazines buy "serial publication rights", sometimes they buy "all rights". If they only purchased the "serial publication rights", then the magazine doesn't own the rights for kit plans. Again, it all depends upon the agreement between the magaziner and the plans maker.
