I'd suspect a contending signal on the frequency. Was it FM or PCM? A PCM receiver usually has fail safe and depending on how that it set up, the model may go neutral controls or lock to where it was when experiencing a contending signal. When turning your TX off, the offending signal would have full and confusing control.
A contending signal on FM, more often causes immediate hard over controls.
