IMO WD40 is horrible stuff. Stopped using it decades ago. Remember 30 years ago spraying all the hooks in my tackle box with it to keep them from corroding. They were coated with rust in a matter of months (mind you these were in an airtight container and never used). When I worked as a mechanic the boss would not allow it in his workshop. Said it is a moisture attractant - there is debate as to how true that is - but it smells awful and there are so many significantly better products out there for just about every one of the 1001 things WD is supposed to do.
I feel WD40 is just another example of good marketing of a very average product..
