Hey Gang

I am thinking about buying a Piper Tri pacer cowl and plans from Calvins Classic Plans. They offer the cowl both with Gel Coat and without it. I don't know what Gel coat is and if I need it or not. Is it just a more finished surface? A Better looking surface or what? All I have found about it here so far is it adds weight.
