I went through the same thing with my nephew. My brother inlaw got tired of it and decided nitro would be a better choice. That was a mistake and turned out to be more annoying for me because I had to do the tuning all the time. Either way my nephew always get some kind of rc parts from me for his birthday and Christmas. I don't mind though, makes shopping for him easy!
