A good alternative to standard Lipos for a starter battery is A123 batteries. Been using them for years with a couple Dynatron starters, one has a Miller reduction and the other standard. Big plus is that they can be left fully charged, no need to put them in a storage charge state, and they can be almost fully discharged without damage.
