The fact that the motor did not start properly is very suspicious suggesting that something has shorted. Check the wiring very carefully but it may be a problem inside the motor which you can do nothing about.
I would be very cautious when coupling a new ESC to that motor, if it does not start normally at very low power instantly shut the throttle as it is quite likely the fireworks would happen again and buy a new motor.
