I never had one when I was younger, but as soon as I started back into this hobby after being away from it for 40 some years, I got a starter right away. ..........I know it can still happen, but at least the starter takes a large portion of the possibility away.
I do feel somewhat fortunate in that I am trained to keep real close eye on what i'm doing around that prop. I spent a life time around wood working machinery and have trained myself to be slow. careful and deliberate about where my hands are all the time. wood working tools, just like a prop,.... will bite you every chance they get !.
This engine was running 10,000 RPM. I started it with a starter.
This was done while I was going over the prop to adjust carb. and set RPM. I'm building a starting testing stand as I type.
