Looking for the name of a warbird.
1. Small, light, and fast.
2. Crew of one.
3. Came along too late in its war to be used in combat.
4. Made in large part of wood.
5. It did not have ailerons.
6. Only one manned flight of this aircraft in its final form was attempted.
7. That attempt did nor succeed. The aircraft crashed and the pilot was killed.
8. Earlier tests, some using an unmanned version and some using glider versions towed aloft by a bomber, had shown it to be easy to fly. This was a necessary quality, because pilots with very limited training were to be used.
9. It had a primitive version of an ejection seat.
10. One original survives, but it is not on display. A few museums have replicas, some of which may contain original parts.
11. Takeoff power was enhanced by the use of four solid-fuel rockets, which were jettisoned after their fuel was used up.
12. Cruise speed was close to 500 miles an hour.
