No, I don't hollow out the cores; I prefer to use lighter foam instead. I have a CNC foam cutter, so hollowing out the foam wouldn't be difficult. The cores alone before sheeting weigh .3 oz each, so I don't think that there would be much to gain by hollowing them out.
