You said that you know some guys that easily spend over 1k for 1/8 stuff...........what do these guys usually buy that send the costs through the roof?
Ever price out the Kysoho Kanai 3 or Mugen Seiki mbX5 1:8th scale buggy kits?

I own an mbX5 with the following set up (the Kanai 3 kit is more expensive):
