Default Shopping for a Lathe

Scott:

I had an European mfg. Uni-Mat lathe back in the 80's. It was
well made, but is very small with about a 2" throw and ~ 4" bed
travel. Today they are probably $500.00. If you were to call a
used industrial machinery tool outlet shop, they might have a
jewelers lathe or an older 4"x 12" lathe for $200.00 +- . The small
units won't have a threading ability. Harbor Freight used to offer a
small unit by Enco, and another one to check out is Jett. These are made in Korea or China and allow you to cut threads, get an
optional 4 jaw and have a better gear change than the simple belt drive.
