Hello, D8,
At the past AMA EC meeting I had a chance to visit with
NEW AMA VP Stillman (District 5)
(he knows radios and owns an RC repair shop)
and I had an opportunity to PICK HIS BRAIN !!!
I asked him about the use of RC Crystals in differing brands of radios...
he stated that
" USE the brand that is of the equipment makers ONLY !!"
it has lots more in play than just proper HZ...
there are lots of other factors
like internal resistance and crystal impedance internally....
at times you can do JUST fine...and get away with brand swapping...
but there has been some problems with brand swapping...
if you match the brands with the crystals this problem does not exist...
always range check your radios.... ( no matter what !!)
but on an average day all may be well...
(and you can get by with this brand swapping)
but on the odd occasion
where batteries may get low...
or temps may be up or down...
what was marginal when plugged in...
can give you a big suprise in the air...
so better safe than sorry....
this may explain some unexpected and unexplained crashes
where when you go grab up the pieces and all is working well...
but in the AIR it temporarily left the safe working zone...
