I have heard of the freezing you mention being done on some Kart engine parts, pistons & rods. Although I don't recall what the exact benefit was. I assume it increases strength some how.
The after market motorcycle piston makers are starting to coat their pistons to reduce friction. May be the next big thing in model engines.
