I have the Yak and it's a great plane capable of some 3D but it's not a 3D monster. It's a bit too heavy. Now for a first teaching aide it's great but here's what I heard another fella suggest and I have to say I agree.

Buy one in pieces (or used airframe) and get your own motor and speed controller and run it on a 3S battery pack (30c or higher) and get it in at around 3 pounds. If you can get it close to 3 pounds this thing will perform very well from the video I've seen on Youtube (look up "Carbon Z Yak 3s"). That video shows a yak that's light on its feet.

OTOH there's another guy that has a video and he flies it like it weighs 1lb. He must have some thumbs! Anyway if you want a 3D Monster go with out all the experimentation go for the 3DHS or better yet just grab an Extra MXS from Extreme Flight. Mine will be in tomorrow and I have a feeling my Yak will be up for sale soon.....maybe. It is a beautiful plane.

You can get the Extreme Flight Edge 540T EXP, Extra 300 EXP, or the MXS EXP with Torque 2814 motor and Airboss 45 Elite speed controller directly from Extreme Flight for $299.95. After that all you will need is one each HS65MG and an HS85MG servos. that will put you about $50 over budget, but it also puts you into a world class, high quality 48" airplane plane.

The edge is better hands down! The Yak isnt bad but no 3d monster. The edge on the other hand is all about 3d performance and built to take a bit of punishment from the newer 3D pilot. Plus it wont brake the bank either! I just built the 3DHS 48 edge and it very well put together. I like it! It will fly on 3s or 4s with no issues.

DWfoamies has a 55" flat Yak 54. I got to fly one once, and could easily hover in about 8mph wind. [link=http://www.dwfoamies.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=30&Itemid=343]link[/link]

the two models OP questioned are not even in the same league. 3dhs 48" edge will fly circles around the ef yak. I also had the 48" Edge exp and MXS from extreme flight and those are nice flying air frames too.

Almost all 3dhs or Extreme Flight are 3d capable. Both excellent companies with excellent products. You can't go wrong with either one. Forget the E-flite, not in the same class.
