RE: What motor for pigi
Just flew with a different landing gear. While it is pretty floppy, flexing about 45 degrees on hard landings, it always sprang right back. The weight is about 1 ounce more than the stock gear. I drilled 4 holes for mounting and used servo mounting screws, attaching it to the existing LG block.
It is available from Northwest Sailplane Products, Inc. http://www.nesail.com/detail.php?productID=2974

@electron
hi is the 10*4.7 also an "apc" prop? it souns like you get better performance(vertically) than with the stock 11*4.7.
why is that? the 10 is smaller that means less thrust right? less current draw=longer flighttimes ?
thanks axel

RE: What motor for pigi
Yes a 11x4.7 would get more thrust... But with a 10X4.7 slow fly apc I am getting almost a 2 to 1 thrust ratio. So the fact is "WHY" go to a bigger prop, I already have more then enough thrust, I get longer flight times and it is easier on the motor and battery...
I haven't tried a 12x3.8, that sounds interesting, might have to give that one a try. Looking at motor calc it comes real close on the current draw as my 10x4.7 but the 12x3.8 would slow the flight speed of the plane down... Guess it would be more thrust same amps but less speed...
I am pretty sold on the 10x4.7 though...

RE: What motor for pigi
Would it be ok to run an 11x7 prop using this setup (pjs1000, castlecreations 25A ESC, 8cell Sanyo HR4/5 FAUP 1950mAh? I forgot to order the 11x4.7, but I have an 11x7 for the meantime, just wondering if it would be ok and not ruin anything.
Thanks!
Thanks!

hi electron, i cannot understand that you have 2to1 thrust ratio??? that means you like 35oz of thrust and plane weight is 18oz?? what is your equipment again?
tks axel

I have a mega 16/15/3 with 3.1 gear box running a etec 2400 li-poly 3s2p.... And you are correct I get about 35-38oz of thrust with a 10x4..7... Here are a couple photos of my setup....

How about a Pigi with an AXI 2808, It flies great and it's very light with 3S2P TP 1300 10C and a CC Phoenix 25. I made my own mount out of plywood but I had to reinforce it because once it ripped itself out with the motor and esc.

RE: What motor for pigi
It's a 2808/24 and I have run it with everything from a 9x3.8 to 12x3.8 but I get the best performance from a 10x4.7 or 11x4.7. It will hover very easily, it weighst about 24 oz and it has with a 10x4.7 about 36oz of thrust. I have learned more tricks with this plane than I did over 3 years flying slimers.

This is what the finished product looks like, it just floats in the air and hovers like a humming bird. I had to make a plywood box and then glue it to the nose to prevent the new motor from ripping itself off it again.

There you go! It looks as good as a Pigi should.
They make a great trainer. The added plywood box will help keep your motor attached. Nice job!

RE: What motor for pigi
Found a neat way to make cutouts for the servos. Outline them with pen, cut along outline with sharp blade. Pull out some foam with long nose pliers to about half depth. Use square headed bolt heated over gas flame from stove; press bolt head into opening and press to proper depth, then smooth all four sides. Looks great and is very strong with no loose foam to worry about.
I also use the round (threaded) end of the bolt ( same size as carbon tubes) for installing extra spars on my zags. Put a straight edge where you want the spar, run the heated bolt the proper length, (45 degree angle, you can put a nut on the bolt that will slide on the straight edge to give you the proper depth ) , install the spars with a little epoxy and your finished with a perfect fit.

RE: What motor for pigi
I just got a Pigi, in the process of assembling it. PJS 1000, Jeti 30 amp asc, Kokam 1500 3s2p, 11 x 4.7 sf prop.
This forum has helped me alot so far in the building process, thanks!
Can anyone tell me how to epoxy/ca the wing into place? This is my 3rd plane, not that great of a builder, looks odd.

RE: What motor for pigi
Found the Pigi flys just as everybody has said, great! I bent the landing gear forward about 2"(the wheels), seems to keep the gear from folding when I land. Makes the landings enjoyable, instead of folding the plane rolls to a stop. Sure is a great plane for hovering and small field aerobatics. Can just about fly it anywhere, not much room needed for landing.

Thanks Greg Covey
I am sorry I forgot to mention the most important thing about this thread. I found it made the construction of the Pigi very simple , any question that I had was answered and the tips that were given saved me many hours in the building. Greg Covey has helped all Pigi owners and is certainly to be commended for all the information and help he has provided.

RE: Pigi
Finished Pigi! have yet to maiden it yet... Decided to route the wires through fuse above wing so it looks better[&:] PJS 1000 outrunner motor, jeti 30-3p esc, slo flyer 11x 4.7 prop, kokam 3000 3s2p (2 3 cell 1500 mah in parallel) Have read mixed flight times about this setup... looks like it would hover at a little above have throttle, so lots of power! Here are some close ups of my setup, hope they answer any questions.

RE: Pigi
Jerry,
Thanks.
Paul,
Good luck on your maiden!
The mixed reports on flight times are likely due to various types of flying styles and weather conditions. The PJS1000 can draw a bit over 30amps at full throttle so a 3AH pack may not last that long. Various ESCs have different cutoff voltages as well.
As for the Pigi 3D, it is still my favorite plane to fly in very windy conditions that keep even the glow guys grounded. The wind against the thick airfoil turns it into a stringless kite in one direction and a rocket in the other direction.
Thanks.
