Shock-Flyer without landing gear question
I'm about to start putting my Shock-Flyer together.
I have the AXI 2208/34 with the additional mounting hardware.
I will be flying off grass. I have noticed a few people have left off their landing gear for grass fields.
Should I put the gear on or leave it off?
I'm new to 3D electrics, but can I assume the prop is vulnerable to breaking on landing on grass if no gear? Is there some trick, or do I have to master a hover to hand landing
PS.
With the mounting hardware I have the prop is bolted on.
Thanks
Todd

RE: Shock-Flyer without landing gear question
the one I've seen at our field lands so slow that it hasn't been a problem for the owner. all of my gearless planes have no problem, as long as I don't dork them straight in or angle in real hard, or hit the ground with much power on and I don't have a prop saver on anything. my advice, don't worry about it, if you find yourself breaking props then install a prop saver. good luck.

I'm running the axi 2208, and you find that the the front end will get tore up more than any part of the plane from landing in grass, the prop catches and rips the foam were the motor mount is, the gear helps but it's best to hover it and catch it.

Forget about landing gear if you are going to fly on a grass field, You will rip it off for sure. If you don´t know how to hover well enough to be able to catch it with your hands, my advise is, get a prop saver, because every time you land and the prop tip happens to be pointing down, you will surely rip the motor mount off the nose

RE: Shock-Flyer without landing gear question
I modded my gear axles and put on some of the larger GWS wheels.
With the larger wheels, you can land in grass as long as you land fairly smooth.
It will also do touch n gos as long as you keep it smooth.
I can even get it to take off from the grass at the field.
But usually I use the small concrete flying pad that you stand at, or just hand launch.
The gear will easily catch in any grass though if your not careful with it. just not nearly as bad with the GWS wheels as the tiny stock wheels.
here is one pic of the gear mod. I have others if you want to see them.

Toss Landing Gear. It's a no brainer.
Leave off the landing gear... especially on a grass runway (even golf course grass short).
As stated before, most of your damage will come from the nose/motor mount area. But the landing gear 1) add weight and 2) get in the way on landing in grass.. because they catch and toss the plane over. Belly land it and you'll be fine. I have yet to break a prop in my dozens of flights.

RE: Shock-Flyer without landing gear question
I have never broken a prop after more than 50 flights with my gear off. If you know how to flare you should be fine, lol. Good luck!
