Quique's Yak54f info
2nd Place: In just 3 weeks, Quique Somenzini designed, built and mastered this Yak 54F to win second place and $500. It was the first indoor electric foamie he had ever flown...or seen!

Hi sorry for my delay to answer but I was travelling.
Yes, the wing area is bigger. When I prepare for ETOC04 for first time ever I flew a foamy type airplane and for first time ever I flown indoors. It was a big challenge to designed and compete within 2 weeks. The original has smaller wing area than the one E-Flite produces. When we worked in the E-Flite version the first prototype they made was identical to the one I compete at ETOC 04. After the flight test we found the airplane flew exactly as mine did, but was difficult to fly with some tendency to snap at high G's corners. At the time we tested the E-Flite Yak-54 F my experience with foamies was much better, more hours of flying. By this time I already knew how to improve the airplane. When E-Flite factory pilot test flew the airplane found this difficulty too. By then with more experience I decide to increase the wing area and keep the aileron percentage the same to reduce the wing loading. The result of that could not be better, the airplane did improve significally from my original competition airplane. The true is the E-Flite Yak-54F it is a better airplane than my original airplane. The reason is more time, more experience when the E-Flite version was tested.
If you would like to forward this email to the right thread at RCU you are welcome.
I am glad you like the plane, I like too and I think E-Flite has done just an incredible kit!.
Take care.

RE: Quique's Yak54f info
i have emailed somenzini about this.(posted above).
and horizon hobby these are the facts i received from horizon hobby
thanks for the info Jason

The fuse and tail are the same size but the wing area was increased to
reduce the wing loading. QuiQue was actually very suprised when we sent him
the larger wing sample...it was lighter and flew better (due to the even
lower wing loading) than his contest model from the eToc.
So while true that the wing is larger (ailerons too), the rest of the
model is
indeed the same.

Any idea when or if the biplane that he flew at the most recent ETOC will be out. From the videos, that plane looked really smooth compared to anything else I've seen. Or was it just his skillful flying?

I believe his biplane was called Bipe-Yak or something similar and its basically his Yak as a biplane I believe..... It did look very smooth but not just anyone can fly like Quique Somenzini. (By the way great job at the ETOC by far the smoothest flying in the entire competition)

RE: Quique's Yak54f info
I'd have to agree there. Quique is definatly the best pilot that was at the ETOC. Quique has a smooth finesse that NONE of the other pilots have.
That being said, he got beat solely on wow factor.
Oh, and the yak most likely was not Quique's first foamy plane. Im pretty sure Quique was flying other foamies long before the yak came out.

Quique Somenzini waves to an appreciative crowd as he hovers his Yak 54F. Those massive ailerons average over 40% of the wing chord.
Quique Somenzini: 3 weeks. In my case, I have never seen or flown this kind of airplane, so I really started from zero and tried to learn as quickly as I could. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out design details.

I agree that he should have won the ETOC this year a very impressive flight that IMHO was not matched my any other flight now even the inverted torque roll although neat I did not see much else. Great Job Quique!! I believe the wow factor was weighted to heavily.

Pasted from closed thread....
Tf2psycho,
I am interested in the YAK54, but some out there are just plane ugly-like the carden. What plane, in your best opinion, is the best version of the yak as a parkflyer? I like the GP 55, but is the QQ or Horizon better?

RE: Quique's Yak54f info
i use the outdoor setup: park370 4100kv on 6.6.1 gearbox (i like the extra noise),20amp esc,TP 1320li po,3 hs-55s,Hi-Tech micro 555 receiver and my fav of all GWS 11x8 prop
after i flew my yak i was amazed!!! i have talked about the way it floats in the air
how easy it hovers @50%throttle(4ever)knife edge is insane just blows away my older 3d plane..gets 20 minutes most of the time before motor pulses
i also look forward to the next plane Quique makes because he got it right with this one
Mike your outdoor yak54f video rules!!

I moved that post here from the closed thread as it is a valid question. As long as it is on topic about the QQ-Yak 54 I see no problem with it.

Will we be seeing a kit for your YAK Biplane? It looked so smooth at the 2005 ETOC.
