Nobody likes this one? I thought it looked pretty spiffy. I'll have one when it comes out.

It looks interesting, but after building an Eflight mini Funtana X, I will wait and see how the Extra turns out. I dislike my Mini Funtana X so I am I am looking for a new home for my 480.

I noticed that the published weight for the Extra is almost identical to the mini Funtana X. But the mini Funtana X lists a battery of 2100, whereas the Extra lists a 1320 to 2100. The Mini Funtana X comes out much heavier than published, most are around 32 oz. If the Extra is similar, or even heavier with the 2100 (no way a 1320 is enough), it will be a flying boat anchor.

This model looks like a candidate for the Cyclon Mini Punch. 2.8oz brushless outrunner/geared. Swings up to a 14 x 9 prop at about 450watts. That should overcome any weight issues. Costs more than the airframe, but most quality powerplants do. Small price to pay for having more than enough 3D H.P. under the cowl. Performance should be phenominal! Can't wait to try it out. Like the color scheme too.

I LOVE the look of a cyclon motor!

That should work very well.

Looks cool, light and swings a big 3D prop, what more could you ask for?! Ok, cheaper price...and then my alarm clock went off!

The manual states that the 1320 drains quickly at full throttle, I would use the 2100. I am quite curious what the weight is tith the 2100 and 480.

I need this plane to round out my hanger. I already have a 33% and a 42% Extra-260

I don't think that cyclon is a good choice if it needs a 14" prop, i am using a 11x5 and it's already close to the ground on take off and landing. Wouldn't go past 12"

I made a short vid using a 10x5E xoar, i was getting cutoffs on the 11" and i thought it was too much for the motor, turns out it was a bad motor lead connection (i think, haven't flown since i re did them) Anyway it's a great plane and will be a top performer if i can sort the power system issues i was having.

Phoenix 35
kontronik maxi dancer (66 grams)
vislero 1300 mah 20C 3 cell (110 grams)
bluebird 371's all around
7P rx
11x5 xoar (switched to 10x5 in the vid, much better power on 11x5)

Auw; unknown, guessing sub 26oz

Note the cutoffs were making me very very nervous. Hope you like the running comentary by my friend "Jello"

I'm running the E-flite 480, 1020KV, Thunder Power 2070mah 3 cell lipo, hs-55's all around with a Great Planes 35 amp speed control. I've got 4 or 5 flights with this setup swinging a 12 x 6 APC electric prop. No ESC cutouts whatsoever.

Never let short landing gear stop you from trying different power systems! That's what they make after market landing gear for. If it wasn't for longer carbon gear, you wouldn't be able to convert a lot of planes to electric! Either that or lots of handlaunching and hover recoverys. A nice 13" 3 blade Vario Prop would be the sweet deal on the nose of this bird. How scale would that look? Then you can dial in your desired pitch. Cool... Had to change the LG on my latest project anyway, too short glow gear. Need to swing a larger prop. I just got the Cyclon Elite 24 for the Z3D project and it does swing massive props on low cell counts. Only drawback is the 1 hr of flight time required lube maintenance. Don't tell you that in the ads, you find this out after you've read the instructions. [:-]Otherwise the Cyclons magnets are incredible. Don't get any metal near them, it will attach and not want to come off. Too bad they have to be maintained with too much frequency otherwise they would kill performance wise vs. other motors. Power to weight is nuts! I hear the smaller outrunners are super performers too. Keep em' flyin'!

I took out the maxi dancer and used a motor very similar to the PA thrust 30 or EF torque 2818-900 and got 4 flights on it after work yesterday. I was using a xoar 11x5 wood prop drawing about 22A. I would NOT use any more than 12" props on such a small plane, even at 11 prop torque is a little more apparent than on the 10", this causes roll on throttle and makes the plane's response a little less predictable. If you want this plane to feel like a giant keep it LIGHT. IMO even a 2100 pro lite with the recomended motor is too much balast, ideal is a 100 to 120 gram pack capable of 26A continuous discharge. Yes this means shorter flights; get more packs. With the extra weight of the motor and a 22A wot load i set the timer at 5 minutes on each pack and standing voltage after 30 minutes rest was 11.5V per pack which means there is a lot left in there. I will set timer at 6 minutes next time and measure resting voltages again. I am pretty sure i will inch my way up to 7-8 minutes like this on 1300mah packs which is quite acceptable.

With only a 1300mah 20C pack i was barely able to achieve 3D CG with the pack almost touching the wing tube. I could not use my 1700mah or more pack with this motor because it becomes nose heavy (the battery tray is in front of the cg mark)

So when chosing a power system take the weight into careful consideration...

Even with the cg right it didn't feel as good as it did with the lighter motor. Looking forward to getting my scorpion 3008/32 !

oh, and i looked at that cyclon; it is designed to mount behind the firewall and it is very long with it's built in gearbox; it would be in the battery tray's path if mounted behind the firewall, plus the shaft will be too short to clear the cowl. So, it will require a radical redesign of the motorbox to fit; it will work but it would be a lot of labor...

After having fondled the 260 at my LHS, I passed because of the firewall/ battery mount dealio. No way to do an inrunner without major surgery. You would have to cut out the firewall, and reposition a little more forward. Too much trouble for such a small plane. Really love geared inrunner performance now, too bad there's not much of an option for motors on this one. Nice looking bird too. Got rid of all my Prolites anyway, Extremes probably be too heavy. Wish they made a 1320 Extreme! Don't worry, someone will pop up on the threads with a glow conversion![:-]

i get my 1300 20C visleros for roughly half the price of normal 1320's, at 110 grams they rock this plane's world.

As for choice of motors; so far i used 2 and have a 3rd on the way, plus the 480 that's 4 motor options, hacker has an offering that would do the trick, so does axi, dualsky... the list goes on and on. Yes the inrunners will be very hard to mount...

I wouldn't pass on this plane because you can't fit an inrunner easily or because tp doesn't make extremes in this size, it's just too good to pass up!

Motor choice wasn't the only reason I passed on this one. Frankly the last few 40+ inchers I've had can't seem to hold up very long. Between rough field flying(landing gear) and passing the transimitter around they just get abused in flight. Can't remember the last time I totalled a balsa plane by crashing(dumb thumbing), always a stripped servo, blown control hardware, control horns(plywood) letting go in flight. I even blew up a carbon wing tube in my last plane.(notice I'm being nice and not naming names)Have had to go up to the 50-60+" range to get a plane durable enough to take day in day out 3D stuff. The tail feathers on this one are a little on the flexible side. And the wing didn't seem to be too torsionally rigid out at the wingtips. Read someone already had a lightpole jump out and grab a wing tip[&:] and there was some minimal damage, somewhat encouraging. Figured for once let someone else test a plane out first and I'll maybe do one later after I can check out all the upgrades, fixes. Scorpion motors look like they are the hot ticket too. Going to pick up the 3020-14 for another project. Their ESC's look promising too. At those prices I can afford to test them out. And lastly the other reason: Zero Gravity PITTS PYTHON 42"!!!! Much as I like 260's....[:@]

Maybe you need a Katana MD

46" and TOUGH just look at that crash video; not a scratch! not even so much as a hairline fracture in a single piece of balsa! After my friend crashed it i stopped filming (thought that was it for the day) NOPE! quick inspection, pop the canopy back on and finished his pack!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtgcB-sLhRQ

I hit some cutoffs with this 260 and fell on the gear and nose pretty hard also not a scratch. i think asking that a plane of any size be able to hit a light pole and escape without any damage is not being very realistic... Plus the larger the plane gets the heavier it is, the more inertia it has and the likelyer it is to damage itself in a collision!

So far the strongest "balsa" (so much cf in there... not really a balsa plane anymore) plane i have seen is by far the katana MD that vid proves it!

Was going to mention the KMD, that construction is a step the right direction. I don't ask my planes to take direct hits or crashes, just hold up in flight! If I'm dumb enough to crash a balsa plane, then I get what I deserve-more repairs or replacement! The Pitts that I mentioned is a 450+watt plane, so it's going to be heavier and better built. Not really a bipe man, but that one is just too cool! Now if PA can make a 260 Fiberfusion, whooooooeeeee!

they have one in the works, its so top secret even i know "nothing" about it... ( PA fibre fusion 260)

i can tell you it's the next "big" thing in electric rc and it's going to be right up your alley... That is ALL i know and it's purely rumour at this stage... (and you didn't hear it from me...)

Hear what?[8D] Figured they would have to do a 260. That's the lastest bandwagon to jump on. Now if we could just get them to start with a clean sheet of paper and make a Reactor/Inspire/Showtime 50 type of 3D plane...
