What plane to buy to learn 3-D?
I have been in the R/C Hobby for many years. I have flown many different types planes and helicopters. I fly some pattern, plus sport fly. I am looking to get into electrics and looking for a 3-d plane to learn on. Should I start with a foamy, Electric Shock, Katana MD or Extreme Flight Yak 54? I want to learn 3-d, but do not have very much experience with 3-D Flight. I would guess the learning curve is going to be costly if I go with something like the Katana?

I would definitely learn with a foamie first. I flew the E-Flite Yak 54F, it was a great plane to learn 3D on.

If you've been flying pattern for quite a while then it shouldn't take you long to learn 3D flight. People may or may not agree but pattern flying goes a lot deeper than 3D flight. All you would need is a transmitter with dual rates (high/low rates). Foamies are nice but primarily for indoors. I mean they are cheap and all but outdoors a little wind makes them very difficult to fly. I'd personally recommend something like the Eflite CAP 232 profile plane. For a balsa plane it is light weight, the wing area is fairly wide which allows it to fly at very slow speeds, but can pull out the 3D material in a heart beat. The plane is only $79.99 usd less electronics. Don't worry it won't take you long to learn, just use low rates until you can get a good feel of the plane then switch back and forth to high and low rates and practice from there.
Good luck =)
Here's a pic of that plane:

R/CMark
I looked at the Super Zoom video on the Hobby Lobby International Site. Looks like a good flying airplane.
What motor, servos. and battery did you use on your Super Zoom?

Try the E-foamies Yak 54 or Extra 300. Built up EPP construction and they will take severe beatings and with a little glue(or hot glue at the field for a 2 min repair!) and or tape you can have them back up in minutes. They're a little pricey for sure, but mine has had 6 months of 3D abuse and still won't die! They pay for themselves after the first few doinks. It's kind of funny to practice scraping every surface on the ground without worrying! My rudder/elevator/ aileron tips all have grass stains and scrapes on them, what a riot! I'm not brave enough to try that with my larger balsa 3D planes(yet!). My 2 cents.

Ekir, yea... learning with a Katana (or really any built-up for that matter) will be aggrivating.
You'll get away with a few flops and tumbles... but not too many.
They are intended for those who have advanced, and although veteran 3d'ers also smash them in, it doesnt happen every time they go out... learning is a different story.
Definitely go with a EPP plane that has a true airfoil.
If you get a good one, you'll even continue to fly it long after you've bought other "fancy" birds.
They are relaxing after you get used to them, and realize they are hard to kill.

I would start with a little electric Profile. I am learning 3D now with a 31 inch Yak 54 Profile. It is a blast and you can fly in up to 15 MPH winds without to much of a handfull. Fomies are great too but wind really gets a hold of them. I have been flying the 31 inch Yak for about three weeks now and I am getting ready to load a 52inch Yak 54 electric. I will still always practice hard maneuvers with the 31 inch Yak (don't really worry about it as much).

I would go with something that's easy to repair. The Yak is NOT always easy to repair. It is a SPECTACULAR flying plane, though. I recommend the E-Flite Tribute. Flys GREAT!

i went with the rtf gee bee 3d from parkflyers.com
its my first 4 ch plane and after some sim time was easy to learn to fly
if you are easy on the sticks it will fly like a regular plane but is pretty capable when you want to ring it out
it doesnt have all the great electrics but works good for me so far great transition plane for $139

This is what I am learning 3D on. I definatly agree with the foamy though. I just don't like the wind factor with a foamy.

I second this plane. Awesome, and has a good price tag too. Just throw a BL 400 motor in it, and a cheap 3s 800mah lipo, hs55 servos, And a 20A esc and ur good to go.
Have fun,
Alex

RE: What plane to buy to learn 3-D?
get yourself a good power set and a bale of fanfold
there are so many free plans for 3d foamys out there
the fanfold cost around $35 and if you are building 33-35 inch wingspan planes you can get about 25 of them out of the bale of fanfold
you will not find a cheaper way to learn 3d
i used to hate profile foamy planes
but now ill never be without at least one in the hanger
you can build one (without painting it) in a couple of hours or less
and if you dont mind building them then you are not afraid of crashing
no fear of crashing= doing things that you would never try if you cared about the plane
btw a 33inch foamy that weighs 13-14oz is a blast to fly outside in the wind
ive done rolling harriers into the wind where the plane moved backwards in relationship to the ground

I would recommend either the Airfoilz Yak or Edge 540. Both are very easy to fly, will do any maneuver, and are fairly durable (though not indestructable).

I would recomment Blade XL. It's a giant foamie--56" wingspan. At 3lb, it's a 3D monster with somethig like Hacker A30-12XL on 4 cells
Here is the link. http://www.icare-rc.com/blade_xl.htm

I have to triple the Airfoilz. I'm flying the Yak, and will soon pick up the Edge. They are super tough, fly true, easy to build, and fly like a much bigger plane.
