No need to use a folding prop if landing in tall grass. I fly a Yak 55 profile from a field of tall grass, hand launch and full stall landing into tall grass with no problems.

I'm currently building the 540 and, based on comments on this forum, I reinforced the landing gear with regular wired expoxied to it. It seems very strong now. I have not flown the plane yet but I don' think I will have any problems with it. See attached photos. By the way, I put on slightly bigger wheels without the pants since I take off and land on a grassy field.
I have a question about the CG. Instructions say that it should be 4-1/2 inches from the leading edge. Mine balances perfectly at 4-1/2 inches..... but WITHOUT THE BATTERY!! I have to assume that it is supposed to balance at 4-1/2 with the battery mounted so mine is way too nose heavy.
I do have the Park 450 motor installed instead of the 400 which is a little heavier and it mounts a little forward compared to the 400. However, there is no comment about it in the instructions.
Did any of you have any problems coming up to the 4-1/2 CG point??
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I did not have much time, but I just couldn't wait any longer even though today was a very windy day.
The wind was blowing well over 15 mph, so I was not able to trim it. I'll have to wait for a calm day for that.
I finally got to balance it at the recommended 4-1/2" point without adding any weight. I just had to place the ESC and the battery underneath the wing, behind the landing gear.
Using the Park 450 outrunner gave it plenty of power against the wind. I was able to take off from the ground in just a few feet. Did a few circles, rolls, loops, knife edges, etc -- however, not very pretty because of the wind. Landing was a little more intense because of the wind, but I was able to control it well and landed it "elevator style".
I'm going to really like this plane. I think it will be a great 3D trainer, so I hope to be moving on from 2-1/2D to 3D soon.

Heard of some flights over 20 minutes and others getting 12 to 15 minutes depending on the type of flying. This is with the Park 450 and Thunder Tiger 1320 3 cell Li Po set up.

Yeah, the park 480 is definitely way more power than you need. The plane will be very nose heavy, and will fly heavy overall if you use that motor and a battery than can drive it. I would think it would also be tough to get it mounted to the motor mount. That being said, I believe there are some that have done it. I know there is one guy that mounted A123 batteries on his (which is a lot heavier than Li Poly) and he flew it around alright. If you search around on the forums you should be able to find that.

I have found that mine flys a bit better heavier. Tracks better at least and I am still able to hover it. this plane is very manuverable and it is a blast to fly - even in the wind.
Here's what i have in it.
Axi 2814-12 gold
Castle Creations 35 amp esc
2100 mah Thunder power battery
HS 65 servos
Castle creations 7 channel RX micro

Hi guys, i need some help. I am thinking of buying this plane for the following gear I have, and I just want to know if this gear will fly it: Electrify Rimfire 28-30-950kv (PN# GMPG4560), Electrify 25a brushless sc (PN#GPMM1820), and Electrify 1500 MAH, 11.1v 20C (PN#GPMP0613). I am brand new to electrics, and any help you give me would be great!! Thanks and happy flying

Okie,
Looks like you have a setup that will work alright. That motor will provide 150W, which is what you want. For 3D flying, you want at least 150W per pound (I personally prefer closer to 200W/lb), and this plane comes out to about 1lb. If you haven't already bought the motor, I would think about the 750kv version. That will give you more torque at the expense of speed. The lower kv motors also tend to consume less watts, so you get longer flying times. If you use a 11x3.8 Slowfly prop with this motor, you will get outstanding torque and a large prop wash, which is perfect for flying 3D. You want to fly low and slow!

Was looking for a small front yard 3D plane and I tried to purchase this model from Horrizon Hobbies today. They have raised the price nearly 40% from that posted in their catalog. Price increased from $89 to $119. It states prices are good through Sept 30, 2008. Was very disappointed since it seems much more than inflation.

RE: Eflite Edge 540 BP 3D ARF - Comments??
Hey guys, i'm thinking about getting the Edge 540. I have been flying profile planes for a few years but i no longer live in the country and want to fly on the jr high football field behind my house. I just began researching electrics and don't know much about them. I thought i would go with the Park 450 Brushless Outrunner Motor, 20 amp Brushless ESC, and the 1320 mAh 3 Cell 11.1 V LiPo, JST. The is the setup it suggests on Horizon Hobby, is this a good setup or should i go with something else? Also what receiver and servos should i go with, i have a Futaba 6EX radio and i have always ran futaba receivers and servos. Thanks!!

RE: Eflite Edge 540 BP 3D ARF - Comments??
Ok, I just bought this plane. I am pulling the electrics out of an old foamie, so I don't have much choice what I put in it (I can always go buy new stuff sometime). My question is, will I be able to hover with this setup: Tower Pro 1750kv, E-flite 20C 3S 1250mah LIPO, and a 25A Speed control. The RPMs per volt are much higher, but I would swing a smaller prop. I am not very knowledgable with the "ep" terminology, so any help would be appreciated.

my friend is also running a 450 but with a 1500 3s battery. i was wondering which prop to use. I was thinking of 10 inch because of the flexi landing gear. i have a profile katana that i just maidened last week using a 10 x 6 apc but with a 400 motor (im now in love with this plane). would this same prop work well with the edge setup?

wow, not a very busy thread. hope to have the 540 up tomorrow morning and a video posted this weekend. i also tried a 10/9 apc slow fly prop but it seems to warm my 400 motor up very quickly. maybe that wont be a problem when the plane is moving through the air. will probably expirement with that on my katana first. will try to get someone up early in the morning to shoot that video also. i need new friends that don't like to sleep in on weekends!

deadsticker, were you able to try out the setup you mentioned below? im just curious about choosing the right prop size. i was thinking of using a smaller prop because of the flexi landing gear so i have been experimenting with 10 inch props. i was using a 10x9 apc on my profile katana, which im guessing should fly about the same as the edge. i tried out a 10x5 prop before this current setup and it worked fine but when i used the 10x9 it had insane torque but the motor ran a little warm. let me know how your flight went so that i can consider a larger prop (without having to run to the LHS to buy another one). you can check out the video of my test flight on the katana here

RE: Eflite Edge 540 BP 3D ARF - Comments??
I didnt get to until today...She weighs in a tad on the heavy side (14.4oz w/o batt) but I'm not too worried with the 450. I flew it with a 11x3.8 and a 12x6 seein as those were the only 2 sizes that I have. The 11x3.8 was insane...so much pull it took off under 1/2 throttle. The 12x6 was a little smoother on power. She flew straight as an arrow with 0 trim needed. Loops were effortless and rolls were perfect...didn't move off axis at all...I wouldnt worry about the prop hitting. just program the motor cut off and cut it just before you land. This thing sits down with 0 rollout on grass cause she just glides right in...

Oh and I ended up usind a JR ds285 on the rudder instead of the airtronics. awesome little plane but my motor stick has developed play on the motor so Im gonna use some 2mm bolts with nuts instead of the little wood screw it came with...might even have to put some shoegoo or epoxy to get the right thrust to stay...

Flight number 2 this morning...I love this plane!! Will do waterfalls, hover, flatspins and about anything else you can think of without much effort. Timed it too...got 8:55 before the motor started to pulse from the lipo cutoff running the park 450/30amp pro SB speed control/thunder power 3s 1320mah/SM22 and ds285/ ar6000e...
