Its been a while since i've flown the AJ, but from memory I set the CG exactly the same as what was recommended in the manual and it was perfect for 3D!

I only used a 2200mah thundepower though and it didnt need to be right up the front as papajeff's setup suggests!

Heres a clip with the setup i have had on it thus far.. Not sure if i had posted one already. but anyways...

777,

Remember that I'm just an "Old Dog" Grandpa and can't, no matter how hard I try, fly 3D like you young guns!
So, I kinda fly on the conservative side! I did go from a Flight Power EVO 25 / 3S3700 pack to a 4S3700 and
installed a Castle CCBEC just to play it safe and to get a little more air time. With the extra weight of the 4S
in the nose of the AJ, I can get 10 - 15min. flight time and my Flight Power pack is not even straining! My CG
is still 2 5/8" back from the leading edge with no problems.

Hey Papajeff,

not having a dig at you at all mate. Kudos to you for still bein the flying "gramps"! representative on here!!!

Have you got a simulator... I learned to 3D on my sim before i even took it to the field! nowadays the sim tends to be "ALMOST" obsalete... I get more practice flying inverted harriers around my feild compared to flying the sim.. As realistic as the sim is, you just can beat doing it with the real thing!

Still... you cant beat practising a manouvre on the sim and then bringing it out to show off in front of all your mates!!!

And to put your point fwd...Your getting 10-15 minutes flight time outa your batteries where as im getting 6-7 minutes tops outa mine if im flying all out 3D!

Skultura aka. Latitude (or is it) Latitude aka. Skultura,

What's up, Mates? How you doin "Down Under?" Winter just hit us here in New York State, so it's
building time and, like you suggested, SIM time, too. Practice 3D.....Practice 3D....Practice 3D!
Have you or your Mates tried Flight Power packs yet? Here in the US, they have become extremely
popular! If you don't have a local outlet, they are available thru Tower Hobby.

My Mates' current article just came out on RCU;
http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...rticle_id=1056
"THE NEED FOR SPEED" Let me know if you like it. We are working on a "big" EDF article next and my
project is an F-86. For an old Dinosaur, I'm sure having a good time. Ohhhhhhhhh.....Yeahhhhhhhh!

Regards,

Papa Jeff

Pappa

Good to see you can get excited about a F-86 (Yawn). Unfortunately thats what we had to fly in college AFROTC. I have always had a little dislike for them because of the poor power available. Throw that throttle forward, and take a litte nap while she spools up. Now the Eurofighter or Mirage 2000 would be something else. Good luck with the project. ENJOY

Hey Papajeff..

Yeah it was scultura, now Latititude.. changed email addresses due to junkmail etc so the profile name followed suit.. Sorry to confuse you.!!!

So winter aye!?! Yeah just coming out into summer here nowadays, our spring here has been windy as though, so even though we've been out flying it has been rare for a good quality windless day unfortunately!

So the F-86, is that the hobby lobby version? Looks familiar? Havent gotten into ducted fans yet. I like them but prefer spending money on 3D to all out speed!

Still flying thunderpower cells at the moment, flight power cells are available here through modelflight (http://www.modelflight.com.au) but i've had freinds use them and were dissapointed with the performance in comparison to their thunderpower extreme cells so i havent tried them.

So how do you get into writing reviews etc for these guys? sponsored flys? or do you purchase the kits and build them up yourself for reviews or what? How does it all work? Would be keen to review some 3Ders out there but havent got the cash to back myself at the moment! Uni does that to you aye!

Let me know how the edf project goes hey!

Looks great, but how many of us can afford a 50cc gas setup!!!???!!!

Its an edge 540 isnt it? Would prefer an extra or a yak in the 50cc size personally!

Yea the economy is shaky enough to make us all think before spending large sums of money on toys, but you can't take it with you !
I hear you on the Extra and or Yak 50cc, but you can bet if Andrew was involved the AJ Edge should perform just fine.
AJ Edge..................why doesn't that sound right.

I hear ya, AJ is a great pilot, and if his previous planes are anything to go from then im sure his edge will perform just as well, the video looks great! So not fair though, when i did a knife edge a touched a wing tip on the ground my plane didnt fly away...it just cartwheeled and snapped the fuse in two! Gotta love it!

C-182,

That Andrew Jet-Skee is real SLICK........................thus the AJ Slick! And it's just
gotta be a beauty! I had a feeling that AJ was eventually going to take his 57" and
expand it to a BIG OLD Gasser 3D. He did real good and I'm happy for him.

I'm currently involved in a EDF build and that has kept me occupied. What are
your Winter projects?

777,

Hey, Mate, what's up with you? I wonder if you guys do Thanksgiving? If you do, I sure
hope that you had a good one. You stated the following in a previous post;

"Still flying thunderpower cells at the moment, flight power cells are available here through modelflight
(http://www.modelflight.com.au) but i've had freinds use them and were dissapointed with the performance
in comparison to their thunderpower extreme cells so i havent tried them. "

We have used both TP and FP and find them to be basically the same in performance. What specifically do your
Mate's refer to in their disappointment with the Flight Power packs?

Nope sorry..No thanksgiving down under.. Whats the tradition behind that one???

As for the difference between FP and TP cells... (purely mates opinion) He seemed to think that the thunderpower cells were able to deliver a different power delivery to the flight power cells.

The only way he could explain it to me is that the FP cells were far more linear in their delivery throughout the cycle where as TP were apparently more punchy in their "burst" of power.

Cant back that up with any facts but that was his opinion, and when your spending $100 a pack you tend to think twice before purchasing!

Well this is kinda funny bearing in mind both brands source their cells from the same manufacturer! Hehehehe ...

No kidding!

Like i said, no justification or factual evidence to back that up, just a mates word, and like i said before, $100 bucks a pack makes you think twice before jumpin in the deep end!

Might have to give em a try in the future!

Latitude - I know what you mean ... I am testing out the new Rhinos and they seems to be pretty good, best of all they are cheap esp the 5S 4,900 packs!

I got my AJ and been too lazy to build her, this thread is great, gives me a heads up before I start on mine. Will be flying her on 4S 2,500 packs. Motor ought to be a DualSky 3548-5 turning a 13x6.5, should give me about 600W at the prop. Guess that's enough to enjoy her.

Hello All,

It's May 2010 and I am hoping I can get some recommendations for a power setup for the AJ Extra 330. I've had this in my closet for the last 3 years and my oldest son (6 1/2) is ready to start flying. I appreciate any help with the setup, as I know that a lot has changed in 2-3 years.

For the power setup I would like recommendations for longer runtime, as I am not a 3D pilot (yet). Thanks!

Do you plan to use this plane as a trainer plane for your 6 1/2 year old son?

No, I'm not building this as a trainer for him. It's for me and he might be doing some buddy box training on it, but there are no requirements for him. He will have his own trainer plane later this summer.

Here's what I'm running although you might want to go to a higher MAH battery as I only got about 6-7 min flight times. Maybe going down on the prop and up to 4S on the battery might help with flight times as well but I've never run it that way.

Hacker A30-10XL
Hacher X55 ESC
APC 14x7
Hitec HS65HB-Ail, Elev
Hitec HS82MG-Rud
3S 2500 Mah Battery

Hope this helps. I'm sure there are a lot of choices for this plane.

Best of luck.........Mark
