Looks great. How do you think that tailwheel is gonna hold up? Mine looks cheesy. Man that middle photo is giving me 29 Palms flash backs. Ill be back there Mid Jan :O
Hi scottfl78,

I've got over 100 flights on mine, and the tailwheel has held up fine. Here's a little mod I do on all my planes with this type tailwheel. I use the 4 inch zip-ties, and harden the slots I cut for them with thin ca.

Maidened my Yak today It flew great. I went with the rearward 4" CG and it was perfect. I rolled inverted and it was near hands off. I am using 3S and an APC 12x8 because I had them on hand. It is 46oz RTF but needs more power. I need to get some 4S but I will need another charger for those Even though it is under powered it will still do pattern type flying so I will practice that till I get some bigger batteries..

Scott - Did you use the recommended Torque 2814/820 Outrunner, or what? Should be good for 500+ watts, no? Even with 3S, if you use a bigger prop e.g. their recommended 13x6 or bigger.

alright, that's great to hear. Mine flew like a dream with no trim need. I have a scorpion 3020-16 with an apc 12x8 prop. it will kind'a hold a hover, but 4S would be great, but i may try a different prop. Do ya (scottfl78) have any pics of your bird?

According to the data from Scorp about the 3020-12 (very sim to 3020-16), you should get 65+ ounces of thrust with 3S and 12x8 prop - should be good for hovering with AUW of < 50 ounces. If you go to 4S and 11x5.5 you should get over 100 ounces of thrust - enough to REALLY toss that thing into the air!!

I am using the 2814/820 and Airboss ESC combo. I am using a 12/8 which is the closest I could find to the recomended that I could find at the LHS. Don't get me wrong it might hover but it wouldnt have any pull out. I would try a 13x6.5 if it would negate me buying a 4S; if you guys think so. It is decent as far as verticals for doing hammer heads and loops but I want to try a 4S because I am sure it would have more authority then.. The only pic I have is of it hangin in the garage.

nice, yeah with a 4S you should be able to get better performance. I talked to the rep at EF and they reported using a 4S on the videos. oh, and nice poster .

the zippy packs are pretty good, well i like them. I have around 6 of different sizes and they seem to perform well. I have ordered from hobby king a couple of times and usually get my stuff in about a week on average. That's from hong kong, not too bad.

here is a link to some 4S

OK - with your motor's rated max 518 watts and a 3S, you would need to prop it down to get 518/11 = 47 amps which WAY exceeds your motor's 28 constant/37 max amps.

So you can't really get near the motor's potential with a 3S, probably only safely to about 400W if you can get a prop that happens to do it. If your AUW is about 3 pounds that give you 400/3 = 133 watts/power, i.e. not as much as is desirable for 3D (close to 200watts/pound preferred.)

However, if you spring for the 4S, you are looking at potentially 37 amps * 14 volts = your spec 518 watts, or about 170 watts/pound, i.e. good hovering from which you can snap out of at will. I think you need to buy half a dozen 4S 3700msh packs !!

Hope this helps...Chris

Hello All

I just bought one as a present to myself. I am a foam plane and heli flyer. My first balsa. What is the best way to trim the ultracote around the openings? Should I just cut it with my #11 X-acto blade or use a soldering iron to burn away?

I Ironed it and then cut the holes out and CA'd the edges to keep it from coming off in flight. I went on the conservative side and didnt cut too big. On 3S 8 minute flights my batteries motor and esc aren't getting very warm so I think they are workig fine letting the air out. Only 3 flights so far but the covering shows no signs of coming loose.

with a 3s setup...you would want to use a 14x7, but watch your amps....
the 12x6 is the prop for a 4s setup....

I have (2) 4S GForce 2250mah's on the way right now with priority shipping for $100.97.. Not a bad deal. About half the cost of Thunder Powers so we will see how they do. Also ordered the FMA Cellpro Multi4 Charger. This is my only 4S plane right now so had to get the 4S charger. When I get these batteries I will try your prop suggestion. Should be awesome with a tad more power..

Well I tried a 11X8 apc and got slightly poorer performance. I just got a 13X6.5 and 13X8 i'll try next. I think im gona do the same as and get 2 2S and and try that.

How much flight time are you guys getting with the 4S packs?

I have been flyin my 3S's waitin on the 4S's in the mail and the guys at the field still always comment on how well this plane flys. I must have the CG about nailed cause when I roll inverted it is either hands off or it climbs ever so slightly. Flys beautiful! Can't wait for the 4S to get unlimited vert..

Getting 5 minutes with time to spare flying 3D on a 4S thunder power 2200 pack. I put anywhere between 1100-1200 mah back into the pack. I'm using the Axi setup w/ 12x6 prop.

Wow I got (2) 4S 2250mah 20C GForce batteries in the mail from Valuehobby.com.. Charged one up installed it and did a run up in my garage. Holy #$%^ this thing has some power now! It sounded like a scalded dog compared to 3S. Can't wait to fly it. The lipos were cheapos at $45.00 a piece but from what I have read they are fine. The have some spacers between the cells for heat dissipation which is nice but it barely slides under the wing tube. Fits snugly but I had to take some velcro off the pack to make install and removal easier.

I don't see the carbon rods that are used to brace the stab. Didn't your kit come with them?

There were reports of the stabs breaking. EF started putting carbon fiber in rods in the kits. Your plane, do with it what you want.
