Seeking advice on 3D/Sport aircraft and Simulator question
Evening Folks,
First time post, bit of a lurker
I have a mixed background in the R/C world. Love building and flying airplanes, just got into helicopters to satisfy the curiosity. I am an average "sport" flyer looking for some help from the 3D community (or anyone else listening in). I am looking for a good entry level kit (or ARF) for more aerobatic flying but not into extreme 3D by any means. When I take it to that next level I will probably start out with a foamy or well known profile like the mojo .60. Right now I am looking for recommendations on a high quality kit or ARF in the .90 4 stroke range up to 20cc gasser, leaning to gasser but will gladly listen to suggestions on engine size as well. Not a fan of electrics so I am vetoing those for now I have a modest budget but don't want to break the bank. I am willing to pay for quality kit all day long over cheap garbage.
I am truly in love with many of the Extras/Edge 540/MXS-R/Yak/Sbach, etc. I will be the first to admit that I love the looks of the airplane but really want a solid flyer as well. With that being said did I just open the flood gates? Honestly appreciate anyone's experience or feedback.
Regarding simulators: I have the latest Pheonix sim. Been flying everything on it but focusing on aerobatic airplanes and larger scale helicopters. Does anyone have any feedback on the realism of the flight characteristics of the "aerobatic" airplanes? Most notable for me is the Max 3D and the Edge 540. I always increase the realism to 100%. Wondering if more people find Real Flight better for training 3D. I find the aerobatic selection on Pheonix is very limited in model selection.
Input/discussion is much appreciated!

RE: Seeking advice on 3D/Sport aircraft and Simulator question
Hey purple. Check out 3Dhobbyshop, Extreme Flight and AeroWerks in that order. 3DHS and EF overall have the most refined airframes. I would go for the foamy first. it will be the best tool for beginng 3D and you wont be heart broken if you smash it. I have had Realflight sim forever and you can usually adjust a particular plane i.e. c/g, weight, throws to make it fly better or worse.I'm sure your sim is the same. do they have auser modified forum for your sim?most planes as they come arent a good representation of the real model atleast on realflight.
I would stay away from short tailed planes. I personally dont think they are enjoyable to watch or fly .just a bunch of stick banging
good lick

RE: Seeking advice on 3D/Sport aircraft and Simulator question
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the input!
Agree 100% on stick banging....just not my deal. I enjoy the aerobatics just not at the level of a "dumb thumb" away from many balsa pieces :P
I have looked at each of the sites you mention and they look to have quality kits. In your opinion would stepping up from .60 nitro kits to a 20cc gasser be too big of a jump? I am very confident in my flying abilities and would like a larger aircraft for visibility mainly. Plus, my 7 year old needs a foamie and can damn near outfly me on the sim :P I should ask if there are any of these ARFs that you would shy away from based on others feedback on flight characteristics.
Pheonix is fully customizable as you mention with RF. I will need to check the forums and see if I can get more realistic settings for the characteristics I am looking for. I don't need to hover or torque roll "yet" I do like some speed and really good vertical performance. That might be putting me into the pattern class. I can't quite get a grasp on my flying preferences yet :P
Thanks again

Bigger Flys Better.
You should look at the 30cc planes, that will give you a lot more choices. All 3 of the company's mentioned above have aiplanes in this size. I own airplanes from all 3 and am happy with them all. If it's 3D you want extreme flight and 3DHS are the way to go. I will say if you want good customer service then stay with Extreme Flight or Aeroworks both company's have AAA+++ service and products. 3DHS has great airplanes but poor customer service.
Remember 1 thing BIGGER FLYS BETTER

I would encourage the 20cc gas plan! You mentioned a Mojo 60, why not go right to that? That plane works great with a gas 20cc? With the control surface throws on the conservative side, it'll fly like a trainer.... with a huge bag of tricks up it's sleeve?
A lot of enthusiasm in the Great Planes Revolver camp as well. That plane and a 20cc gasser are made to go together. Built more for sport, it's very capable and so popular Great Planes just brought out a 50cc version of it! Check out the "Larger Revolver" string in the ARF section.

Stay away from GP for 3d... revolver is a sport plane... just saying
60 sizes Mojo's nice but not big enough for the 20cc you should jump up to the big mojo or priemo the 65" one... DLE 20 is kind of have for the 60 size one ... IMO
Also Mojo's are kit's and build kind of easy but his instructions and updates are not for first time builders... it's kinda asumed you know whats going on when building that kit .. IMO
But if you have built a few planes your golden. ..[8D]
Also really what no one has talked about key to learn and moving up in skill... i think is the factor you have to be not affarid to bash your plane IE if you top out your budget on the new'st bling and your out there with a 3 grand airplane you might have some aganzity doing inverterd harriers or rollers down low hell you might even feel that way just in a low hover or a KE fade.. If you’re flying a plane you’re not super in love with... you can kinda let lose and fly more riskey in my openion...
