RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
i had the same thing happen to me with the west T1 last July .it did not sound right and there was no spring to the engine when turned by hand (i did not take the engine apart just in-case the warranty was void) so the next day
i took it straight back to Alan at Weston's he took the engine apart in front of me and showed me the damage caused by the cir-clip.
he then replaced the engine there and then
since then the hype has only been flown twice I'm playing with my spa3dt to get some practice
before i crash the the hype cant really afford to loose it[:@]

RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
got the figures on the circlip today, 4 total now ( known of ) out of over 5000 engines sold.
not a bad figure if it's true, but it seems like i know of all 4 of the failures personaly thanks to RCU[&:]
still if it does happen at least everyones getting new engines no quibble, no "wrong fuel" crap

Weston 50 T-1 FAILURE
Hi All,
I had the Weston T-1 engine fail today. This motor has approximatel 1 3/4 gallons of fuel run through it and was running better each flight.
The failure occured while trying to start the motor and this failure is unlike any that have been mentioned in this thread. The failure occured on the crank shaft where the piston connecting rod attaches to the crank. Trying to hand start the motor for the second flight the motor started to idle than BANG, the motor stopped.
I pulled the back plate off to inspect the engine and found the pistion connecting rod hanging and observed that the crank had failed where the pistion connecting rod attaches to the crank Has anyone else heard or had this type of failure?
A friend of mine at the field has just ordered the T-1/Hype combo and likes it very much. He is now concerned this may happen to his motor. Does anyone know if the Quality Assurance process has been changed, or is different metal being used?
Any comments are welcome.
Regards,
Chuck

RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
not tried them no, if i'm right both engines share everything bar the port timing
Differences between .50 T1 and V1. Hemispherical heads are different compressions, Exhaust and transfer timings are different, T1 has an 8mm bore carb, V1 has a 9mm bore carb. Both come with high speed phenolic bearings and can have Ceramic bearings as an extra cost option.
The issue with broken ones was due to the manufacturer using a below standard batch of material....this effected just a small batch of engines and has been resolved, Weston UK will of course replace any damaged motors.

RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
Hi All,
I'd just like to express my thanks to Alan Greenfield. I sent him an email and withing 24 hours he returned my email. I explained what happen to my T-1 and he is going to replace it. Alan provides fantastic Customer service. A few other companies could learn something from him.

Chuck

RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
cant hurt can it, but your not really meant to take more than the back plate off. might be able to remove that, take the conrod off the crank, spin the piston around so you can see the circlip out the port, tho i doubt you would see a problem, it'd just happen

Sounds just like what I need!
Do you guys think I should use my YS63 or my Irvine .53 with a throttle pipe?

Chuck-
I put my YS 63 on my HYPE and it fits perfectly with the
stock mount position and location and with the
muffler rotated it sticks out of the bottom of the cowl
slightly -almost looks like it was designed for it
ballance is not an issue as mine came out @ 175 mm
No flight report yet due to snow

when it comes to the Capiche those with the £££ are picking the YS63 over the West, but the West is better than the Irvine by far. depends if you want two stroke cost and ease, or 4 stroke grunt

RE: RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
Hi All,
I just wanted to let everyone know what a pleasure it was dealing with Weston (Alan Greenfield). I sent him my broken motor. He sent me a new motor and a new pipe. The new motor displaces more HP than the orginial West 50T-1 and a newly designed exhaust pipe. I hear there is a noticable difference in power from the West 50 T-1 I had. Can't wait to run it in and fly.
Has anyone flown the Hype with this new motor? If so, how much of difference is there?
All comment welcome.
Regards,
Chuck

Yes, I'm running 2 of the new T1's. Ones in a Laser 3D and the other is in a protoype of WestonUK's new freestyle baby thats being launched at the Nuremburg Toy Fair this week.
They have a bit more grunt and throttle superbly.

ah so it's not called "freestyle baby" ( was thinking a small aerobat lol ), so, can i assume Choppy has taking his comments about the Capiche, mixed in a little Hype build style and come up with a lighter ARTF cross breed

RE: RE: Weston 50 T-1 Broken
As Nuremburg starts today I'll give you a sneak preview.
The model is called Groove freestyle. its a 50 size arf thats been designed to give great 3D capability and smooth vice free aerobatics, lightweight (well under 5lbs with a West .50) Its well into the design phase and is already being tested up to protoype 2. Usual quality Weston build with a great Oracover metallic finish.
3D maestro Dave Stephens has been test flying the protoype's and giving great feedback and advice. Some changes have been made and the model is due another test flight this weekend. Its looking extremely promising, and will hopefully be on sale at Sandown. (May) And will be available in the US through WestonUK distributors.
Heres a pic.
