Default What is the best 3D plane?

Which plane has the least number of bad tendencies and can do 3D well and with ease? In my opinion it is the Yak 54 for a monoplane and a Pitts m12 for a bipe.

I'm asking this question for a friend, although I'd like to know too. He's been trying different planes and can't find one that performs the way he wants. He wants one that can knife edge and harrier very well.

Your question is to ambiguous IMHO. You really need to state what size of plane it is your friend wants. And/or what engine is he going to use, or is he going electric??? Everybody and their dog makes a Yak of some sort. Some are great at 3D some are garbage and are good for no more than hanging as decoration in a trendy eating establishment.

So please be as specific as you can about his needs and you will get some good suggestions.

Even then, the problem about what feels good to me may be perceived completely differently by someone else.

Need more ambiguity? Two identical planes with different props, different CG, different servos or expo/throw settings may fly completely differently.

It's more important to get an airframe you're comfortable with, set it up and tweak it the way you like it, then fly the snot out of it.

30cc sized. He's going to get either a 3DHS Edge or Extra.

I don't know about the prop, I think it is unnecesary torque on the plane when a 2 blade prop usually has plenty of thrust anyway.

Use a two blade prop. A three blade is good for scale looks and ground clearance.

3DHS makes some nice stuff. I believe their best 3D plane is the AJ Slick. I happen to own their 30cc Edge 540. I am only 5 flights into it so I don't know for sure if it's exactly what i am looking for. I have flown their 30cc Extra several times that belongs to a fellow club member. It's hard to compare the two for the reasons Barracudahockey mentioned in the third post. My friend is a sport flyer and has his throws mild and CG conservative. My throws are maxed out and the CG is on the rear edge of safe. Both seem to do what you tell them to and have not displayed any bad habits.

Aeroworks 30cc Extra 260 Freestyle. I have been flying mine for a couple weeks and is one of the best planes I have ever had my hands on. Stable harriers both upright and inverted, flies precision if you want, and will do anything you want. I fly it more than my 120cc Aeroworks Edge which is also a great flyer. I have the DLE35RA on the 260 and it has gobbs of power for this plane. Check it out!

I had looked at that extra 260 before, and it's a nice looking plane. He considered it, but we didn't know how it well it flies. I think I've heard enough here with the info about the 3DHS and Aero works planes.

If he's going 30cc get a slipstream MXS. Nice ARF. And you just CAN'T beat the $200 shipped to your door!!!

Pay Attention to Wing Loading. This is very important when buying a 3D airplane.

I would look at the Aeroworks QB Light Extra (my first choice beause of the wing loading) and maybe the EF 78" Extra.

If your friend is just starting out then I would get a profile and work up to the 30cc plane.

He's practised on a twist 40, and got a heavy 30cc Edge 540 that would stall really bad, so he's watching out for wong loading. He would get the light extra, but it's $100 more and he doesn't get a servo discount.

i have had the 3dhs 71" Slick, 74" edge and presently an 89" Slick.

74" Edge was awesome on 8s and just ridiculously easy to hover. If you are looking for a harrier machine, look no further. But there's something special about Slicks. Especially the orange colored version.

There is no 'best' 3D plane. The setup is crucial, and varies from one pilot to the next. A 6-ounce foamy can 3D, as can a 40% gasser.

I still enjoy my EF profile Edge with a 70 4-stroke, and their Chinn Yak with a YS 63. Both 3D awesome.

IMHO regarding 2 blade props over 3 blade props for 3d my preference is for 2 blade props. even though you can get the same amount of thrust from the twop different props I think since the 2 bladed props are longer they will provide prop wash over the control surfaces that is farther from the core of the aircraft thereby increasing control effectiveness at slower speeds, While thinking this out though it might also add more p to the aircraft since the rotational prop wash would also probably strike the rudder higher up too.

moral of the story you probably can't out fly any of the airframes talked about here today onless your jayhawk he can clearly out fly the red slick but not the orange one ..

Depending on your bank account, your experience and preferences, the above manufactures are some of the preferred that make planes that will appeal to just about anyone. Read up on these and I'm sure you'll find something that appeals. That's a good place to start. Good luck!

10 more flight on the 30cc Edge this weekend. I am really starting to like this airframe. It makes you look like a better pilot than you are and isn't that what we are looking for? I also enjoy it more with the SFGs on than without them. Still don't like the way it makes the plane look. But I have flown several SFG equipped planes in the past and don't like the changes it makes in the flight envelope. With this plane the SFG's helped everything without slowing the roll and hurting the hammer heads.
