RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
Frank,
No it's not my first 1.20 size plane but it is definately the nicest one. Just trying to get as much info as possible to increase my chances at a successful maiden. Thanks for your help.

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
Where do i get this special YS140 muffler for the YAK Quique was talking about? What does it look like? Checked Central but it's not on their webpage.
Thanks,
Chuck

I asked Central about it and was told that Slimline is working on it - they should have one at the end of the week - and that was last week when they told me. I would suggest calling them and asking - I would assume they will have it before it shows up on their website.

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
I got a chance to fly the Yak 54 today. What a magnificent flying aircraft. A fellow flyer at my field brought out his Yak with an OS 1.60fx up front. He had somebody put it together for him so neither of us were sure where the control throws were set or if they were at the recommended throws. He decided he was going to try the maiden himself although I offered to help. He's a regular sport flyer type of guy (meaning this plane is a bit beyond his piloting capabilities). He throttled up and headed into the wind. The plane lifted off and then got very hairy. He struggled as the plane porpoised and rolled out of control. After about 15 seconds he yelled "you take it" and tossed me the transmitter while inverted and not very high. I fortunately was able to save it.
I began to trim it out and it reguired just a couple clicks of aileron and quite a few clicks of up elevator. The ailerons on low rate were very sensitive. I did find out afterwards he had no expo. I don't know if the manual gives low rate recommendations to include expo or not but I think I caught in another post here it does. He never uses expo though (old school). After trimming I flew it around and put it through some maneuvers and the plane flies beautifully. I really liked it alot.
I landed the plane and adjusted the low rates on aileron to reduce the throw and put in the needed expo. This helped out a lot and made the plane tame for him to fly and easier even for me to handle. I did some lomcevaks, a spin, point rolls, slow rolls, knife edge and snaps on the 2nd flight. There is very little coupling in the knife edge. Slow rolls were axial and easy to do with this aircraft. The Yak does everything extremely well. The landing was perfect on this flight (pats himself on the back).
The last flight the owner flew it around, then another pilot and then I took over to get a few minutes then land it again. I ended up running out of fuel and dead stick landed it (which I pride myself on after 100's of successful ones). The planes landing gear ripped out on landing. The landing wasn't very hard but on the other hand wasn't "greased" down like I would prefer. Upon inspection I do agree that per a few posts here and Quique's post it would not hurt to add a little bit of reinforcement to the gear plate in some way. Some tri-stock and epoxy or whatever method you prefer. The formers in front and behind the gear plate are capable of giving lots of strong surface to secure the gear but the thin plywood plate used may not have enough to withstand a less than perfect landing. I honestly didn't expect the gear to strip off clean while watching the plane come in as it did.
Fortunately the fix is an easy one. No damage other than a ding to the leading edge in the horizontal stab which can be repaired. The landing gear will be reinstalled with some hardwood blocks and tri-stock and shouldn't be a problem. If you have this plane I would take 5 minutes and do something to add a little "insurance" to this area. The extra ounce it may add might save you from more damage if you get a hard landing or if your field is rough.
Overall this is a great looking & flying plane well designed by the master Quique! Oh yes...I MUST have one

I think the 2.4 would be way to heavy for this application. I am installing a MVVS 1.60 and am worried about the weight vrs wing loading and it is considerably lighter than the YW24. That is the big dilema with the small gassers. Wonderful engines except they are to heavy for the 120 size planes resulting in unacceptable wing loading and not enough power for the 1/4 scale planes. I specifically oredered this plane over the Extreme version cause this one has more wing area. LOL

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
I have a Yak-54. I reinforced the landing gear by adding a 1/4 inch plywood piece into the well. I measured it to fit and epoxied it in. Seems to work well. I broke a landing gear due to a poor landing but plane stayed together. I have a Saito 180 in mine. I have had a hard time getting it to run correctly. Using a Cline regulator. I think I have it now. I don't like the wing connections. The plastic parts that you glue the rubber donuts on have broken. I am trying a new idea. I used canopy glue to glue the plastic part and donut to the inside of the fuse. If this works, I'll let you know. Anyone have other ideas??

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
Had anybody problems with the fit of the canopy?
Mine does not fit in the slot. If I use a lot pressure it will go in but the mounting holes are not aligned and I have a gap of about 5mm between the fuse and the canopyrail.
Any hint what to do would be nice.
If nobody comes up with a solution, I guess I have to get the canopy of the frame and do it all over. The frame is bent upwards giving me the gap.

OK disregard the question.
I cut the canopy off the frame. Made a new former for the front. Cut the canopy front away. Now the frame is completely forward, the holes align and the gap between canopy and fuse is gone. I did not use the screw mounting. I just used one spring loaded pin in at the back like in sailplanecanopies. No messing with screwdrivers and I can lift the fuse at the canopy and throw it around. That's now a tight fit and easy to remove without tools.
What sucks is to pay 400,-$ and have to mess with canopy fitting. There is a 3mm factory canopyframework mistake built in. Quique comes to our club in November - I show him.

Also (OK, I'm being a pest now) if anybody has flown this plane, what are your impressions? And what are you comparing it to? What I mean by that is, is this your first big aerobat? Or do you usually fly bigger planes? Do you usually like to fly 3D? IMAC? Sport? Gassers?

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
Hey guys!!!!! I Finlay got mine about 2 weeks ago and I got about 6 flights on it. It flies good!!
I think it will be even better once I get used to it.
Mine came out to 11 1/5 pounds with an OS 1.60 FX, Slimline pitts muffler and the O.S aluminium motor mount. Hi-Tec 5645MG (digitals) all around and 1 futaba standar for engine.
PCM receiver and a 6V 2000 Mha battery.
I used all the stock hardware except for the tail wheel, I'm using a Sullivan 10-22 pound aircraft tail gear.
I don't like the way to secure the wing to the fuse, the plastic rings already broke, I need another way to secure the wing I guess, so it would be nice some advise.
Did anyone noticed the manual it's in wrong order or it was just mine, I had to cut right in the middle and from page 1 to 20 I think it's fine but from 21 to 32 I had to put it from 32 to 21 to get it in the right order,, did you guys noticed that????
For those of you that are going to use the stock O rings to attach the wings make sure you got exactly 9mm when installing the 4 pins in the wing root, unless you gonna use a different way to attach the wing. I'm telling you this cause 1 of my 4 pins is like 1mm shorter than the others and I could use the rubber O ring.
When you fly this plane with the recommended CG it looks like it is nose heavy but I think it's the down thrust on the firewall, so I decided to make it a bit tail heavy when you balance it and I like it better.

Were you satisfied with the power with this engine? Also, I notice a Funtana in the background. Do these planes compare in any way? I guess what I am really asking is, is this plane worth $200 more!

Well I don't know what to tell you it's different to fly than the funtana, I got an OS 91FX in it and its about 9 pounds, the funtana it's a lot easier to fly. I don't think this plane should be worth $400 bucks, i think it too fragile, the other plane behind the funtana it's a Lanier Edge 540 72'' and I had the same setup that I now have in the Yak and it weighed at 12 pounds, I like that plane more than the yak, but I had it for 2 years, so I think once I get used to the yak I'm gonna really like it too. The funtana it's even more fragile than the yak, I'm talking if you had a bad landing or a wing-stall on landing you can brake it, but the lanier it's the strongest plane I have ever had, like the wings are all balsa sheeted the same with the fuse sides and top, the bottom it's like the yak.
But you know they are completely different kind of airplanes.
Maybe for the price of the yak we should have got a much better hardware for it like push-rods and control horns, tail wheel.
But besides all that it's beautiful airplane on the ground and in the air.

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
I wanted to see whats up with the mystery muffler for the YS 140 we have been hearing about. I sent an email to Slimline asking for any info on the muffler for the YS 140 in the QQ Yak 54. This is what I got back.
We don’t make a specific muffler for that plane, but we make a muffler for the YS 140 series, #4005 side mount and #4015 inverted. Add an “S” at the end of the part number for smoke. All I can say is that, our muffler must fit the plane so that no modifications are necessary.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Am I missing something here???? Any other info out there yet?

RE: Quique's 72" Yak 54
Has anyone talked to central about this?
ORIGINAL: mes
Deweyd,
this QQ, Al Coomber from Central will send me a new muffler specially made for the airplane and the YS140, it is similar to the one I've been using but it should be even better fitting better in the cowl. I should be testing before I leave to the Nats, if it all work out well the muffler should be ready for next week. When you order just say" QQYak54 muffler" for the YS140.

Got mine from Central. It's says right on it that it's for the QQ Yak, but I'm sure that you could use it on other planes with a similar configuration.

That's what I got from central:
Attached is the picture of the YAK 54 muffler installation recommendations.
The selling price will be $59.95, we should have them in stock in
approximately 7-10 days.
