Why don't we take the competition indoors? I mean we have the eTOC now and it seems a pretty popular event. We could hijack a model event like Sandown or such like and get some PR. The field would be largely levelled, I mean apart from a 4d prop there are very little advantages in electric indoor 3d. Worth a go? We could have AA rules or a variation with some set schedules in the morning then flights to music the rest of the day. We could even start at 7am just like F3A . I've flown AA extensively both for testing and competition and having some concrete rules will allow solid practice before any event, which means a better show all round. Just a thought....

How about the NEC, isn't there some show put on there by Traplet? You are telling me an indoor 3d competition to music wouldn't get a few spectators? We could run just one class some set routines then the freestyle. I've seen/flown in a few events now and it needs a good sound system and a great MC to make the day a success. Oh and some good pilots.

So what is the next step going to be in the evolution of this comp? It seems to be stagnating in that it is not growing at all + I heard from someone who has been the last few years that the overall standards were a bit mediocre. Also, why doesn’t it attract the big F3A boys?

One of the problems the comp had was not having a home, its very hard to make such a comp grow when you don't know where its going to be held the next year ,hopefully this has now been rectified. You also need people to do ground work behind the scenes ,the Wellingborough Ogees membership are hopefully going to become more involved with thier experience in running the 3d masters i can only see it growing ! The 2005 event very nearly didn't take place because of venue problems, thats when we offered our facilities, and we had 2 months to get it together, now we have 12 months. So hopefully the f3a pilots that were watching (and there was a good crowd of them at 2005 event ) get the urge to take part, if they see it growing, i think they will.

Don't forget most of the F3A pilots were either at the Nats or the Worlds the previous weekend. Practising for these and for the Freestyle comp would take a lot of time and effort.

Certainly that was one of the reasons why I did not enter this year. May be next year, though basically would have to have my freestyle schedules sorted by March [X(]

Assuming the organiser wants to get these pilots involved perhaps changing the time of the comp would make it more accessible for them. I think the time is right for Mr Westrop to put a survey in the mag to ask questions such as:

Preferred format
Preferred location
Preferred time
etc etc

I also think for this comp to flourish is has to be a two day event. It's ok for locals but you will never entice the cream of the Irish or the Scots who have to catch a ferry and/or drive many, many miles unless you make it worth their while. Right now it is really just the English Freestyle Champs.

Im not English, I say the Irish and scotts just arent keen enough. I agree it needs to be 2 day though, would easily have time for a flight more a day even with a few more people.

I got a few things I wernt too keen on in the format aswell, but It prob doesnt make too much difference. Main problem I found was the 25 bonus marks for flying to music. I rekon they should only be there if music is a compulsary round, I chose not to do any music rounds so they were gone straight away.

The site is really nice to fly from, only problem I found was the ground is a bit too high.

No wonder, it's held just outside LONDON!!! You can't expect us to travel all that distance for a one day comp and what, about 12 minutes of flying. Just not going to happen. If you want to attract us then it needs to be situated in the west midlands, not the deep south (and two days of course). Until that happens then your Shane Robinsons and the like will never enter a comp such as this, especially with their F3A team commitments. And it's not that they don't freestyle or have an interest in this kind of comp. I also believe Angus Balfour was trying to organise a Scottish freestyle comp, so it's not that the Scots aren't interested either.

I think the main thing is to actually HAVE a site for the comp, considering the trouble had getting it for the 2005 event.

Of course a loaction and durattion allowing as many pilots as possible to attend would be in the best interest. lets see what these pattern boys can do.

The music bonus points are great. Music is the way to go IMO. watching flights to music had such a bigger impact than those without, and is great to watch. And music is great fun to fly to (you should try it thomas)


Some official coverage and publicity before and after the comp would be good, not just reliant on RCME. Who wants to go to a comp that no-one has really heard of?

i agree on the music as a compulsory as i wouldnt off dreamed off flying my 2 rounds without it. i too fly f3a and yes the previous weekend i was competing at the nats and still made it to this comp with very little practice at the first known round, idid practice for the freestyle rounds though, so no excuses from the rest off you pattern boys lets see you there next year.

Well if I can pull my finger out and practise hard this winter, may just do it. But I need to improve a fair bit, I dont want to embarass myself [X(]

As for flying to music, Luke is right. As a spectator this year, and previous years, the music adds to the performance. And it is a performance, the idea for this is to entertain, and music is key to that.

Having the comp run over 2 days brings a load of new problems, not just the organizers, but the pilots aswell. More rounds to fly means a bigger commitment to practice, what would the extra rounds be ,compulsory music ? fixed or some sort of matrix ? A 2 day event is possible but the biggest commitment has to come from you the pilots.

Well, from my point of view, it still holds no attraction whatsoever. Sorry, but that is just my opinion. Until it is run to FAI artistic aerobatic rules, or mainly just a 2 day comp I wont be there. Plus it always clashes with Euro or World champs and I know which I'd rather enter (plus it's what I'm sponsored to do).

This year I could of entered but it was literally 5 days after I got back from the World Champs in France. After this years Worlds I was totally wiped out and the last thing I wanted to do was get back in a car and go to a comp, any comp. Esp one that is 500 miles away and for only one day. It's just not going to happen I'm afraid.

As Tangy Tom says, if this comp is to grow and attract the cream of F3A, both Irish and British, then is will have to change both when it is held and the format with which it is run. I say run it to official international AA rules and hold it in the midlands during either mid July or mid September.

Hey angus, how about a Scottish based aerobatics fly-in, not a comp as such, more a fly-in with a few impromptu prizes for some awesome manouvres. No restrictions as long as it aerobatic and controlled? And with the obvious lunchtime demo slots to spice interest in pattern in scotland.

I have tried flying to music a bit, and to be honest I dont really find it too apealing. I find it limits what I think I can do too much, and I decided that I would score much better without it.

I agree music rounds are worth having, but I think there should be some no music rounds aswell.

If it were a 2 day event we could have 2 fixed, and 4 freestyle, and drop the lowest fixed and freestyle rounds.

Good news about the Excelsior, I will be expecting you to enter next year I'm getting my new model in 3 weeks time, the Astral XX complete with -5 degree anhedral tail. Looks awesome and it comes all painted etc etc. Just drop your gear in and off you go.

2 day comp:

1 short FIXED schedule of 5 manoevers
2 or 3 rounds of set music. One 2mins, one 3 mins and one 4 mins
2 or 3 rounds of your own choice of music.
