RE: Extra 260 27% Hangar 9er
Hey Guys,
I am flying the 260 with a DA-50 and PT 23X8 Carbon Prop.
My Problem is that with a Slimline Muffler it is too loud for my Flying Field.
Has anybody used a cannister muffler????
If so, please let me know which muffler and how much drop do I need for the Adapter.
Thanks for your input!

I use a KS 88. Header I made from their kit that you solder yourself.

RE: Extra 260 27% Hangar 9er
Well my project is coming along nicely. I lightened up the airframe by 7.5 oz (all in the fuse). Many parts were replaced and I believe I'll have a model that's going to come in at ~ 11 1/2 lbs with the Saito 220 (no kidding). I've elected to stick with the aluminum wing tube, and I haven't found a replacement for the stab tube (in carbon fiber) yet. The aluminum tube comes in at 5.6 oz, where as the closest diameter carbon tube is at 3.5 oz. I'd have to "shim" the tube to come in at the correct diameter (wrap tube with fiberglass at ribs and bulkhead in fuse for tube), so no weight savings there anyway. I've stuck with the Dubro control horns through out, but I wanted to go with a set of home grown or purchased carbon plate type horns (or even formica), just not enough time (running out of summer) to research enough to make sure they'd hold up?
I tried to lighten everything I could, and that's why it took me a month to put this plane together. All in all, most of the stuff was lightened by 5-25%. It works out to be minimal for each part, but the bottom line is, when you have many, many little parts all coming together, they add up to that 1.5# savings!
I'm going with a slimline on the 220. Had a ton of problems with the original saito muffler. I'm going to mess around with propping. I'm going to order a 21X6 & 22X6 from Chief. Anybody want to chime in here with a brand / pitch / diameter recommendation for this engine???
My 9303 is the only set-back right now. Was in the process of programming my ailerons yesterday when I noticed that as soon as I turned off the radio, my set-up's would be gone. Looks like it might be the Flash memory, there was another gent. that had the same problem in the radio forum. Got turn-around within a week. Hopefully I'll get the same service. All in all, I'm glad I got this radio... Much simpler to set up than my 6 ch Futaba.

Shag555: On my 10X I have to exit out of the programming to the "home" screen before I turn it off in order to save the programming that I just did. The 9303 is probably similar.

Yeah, I've tried that, but to no avail. I got on JR's forum and Snyder told me to send it back for servicing... There is another guy who had the same issue, and his was a week turn around, so by then the rest of the plane should be buttoned up and ready for the air anyway.
Still bums me out though.

10-4. I agree. You spend 500-600 bucks and expect somethingto work and then CRAPO - it doesn't. Don't feel bad though because Futaba also has had issues with some of their stuff. I guess exlectonics have become so complicated that it takes a "learning" process to get things absolutely perfect.
Good luck,
Bobby

RE: Extra 260 27% Hangar 9er
No worries... Last year I waited for a 5645 to be repaired... That took something like 5 weeks. I think I'll be fine with a week or two considering the plane isn't even completed yet. The only reason I found this "bug" is I figured I'd set up control surfaces as I installed them. A little glitch, but no biggie. I agree with you on these computer radio systems... They're so complicated (at least from my perspective). I don't know about the 9303, but the 12 and 14MZ's of Futaba are essentially a computer. I'd bet the 9303 and the 10 from JR are the same. Too bad they didn't build a "reset" switch in there somewhere. There and again, I don't know what I'm talking about in this realm of radios either, and I'm certainly not about to find out. When I adjusted the tension on my sticks, I noticed that there's at least as many circuit boards in there as in a mini dvd player (or more)!

Awsome Tom! Are you guys flying any IMAC over there??? Been looking to get into it, and have a more experienced pilot who would more than likely start in Sportsman Class.
That fun fly sounds great! I'll have to see If I can round up anyone from our club and come over.
Thanks!

no, all we do is one person goes up at a time and does a little routine [not hard, but fun to watch]
you will need a spotter
come and you will have a good time
there will be around 50-100 flyiers
so you should get a flight it

Shag555: go to www.mini-iac.com for the IMAC web site. You are probaably a great flyer but as Blaine Austin found out last year at the Little Rock, AR IMAC, IMAC is definitely harder to do than XFC!! You have to learn basic things first - like flying a straight line, using the rudder to wind correct and throttle management just to name three things. My point is that maybe you should start with the Basic sequence and compete in a couple of contests to see how you do and get some pointers from the other guys. Then you can move up to Sportsman or higher if you like.
Just a suggestion having been there and done that myself. I never thought flying a straight line was so hard until I had to do it in front of judges that knew what to look for!!
Good luck and welcome aboard to the world of IMAC!!

RE: Extra 260 27% Hangar 9er
Thanks for the advise... I would definately start at the basic level. I'll check out that link. My biggest problem where I'm flying right now is that I'm getting sick of "just throwing the plane around" weekend after weekend. Time to do something a little more difficult.

Yes, but it wouldn't be legal for competition
Garlec, another option to the slimline pitts, is the jtec LARGE pitts. It's about as quiet as a cannister for only 130 dollars.

Its very late and I have just got my Extra togather. When I went to balance it, I don't understand the wording of the cg point. Top of wing tips, measure back 5 inches from leading edge at fuselage?? I must be misssing some thing. I went through about 10 pages of thread, and decided to ask. What do they mean?, what is the cg at the tip, and balance up or upside down?

Just balance it 5 inches from where the leading edge of the wing intercepts the fuse. You should be good to go. This will fall a little shy of where the rear of the wing tube is.

this is what they have posted:
Balancing the Model
Step 1 on page 40 of the manual
The first sentence should read "On both sides of the fuselage, measure back 5" from the leading edge at the fuselage and mark both places with a felt-tipped pen."

RE: Extra 260 27% Hangar 9er
I am thinking of getting this 260. I want to run 4 cycle. Reccomendations? Thought Saito 150 or 180? Not really interested in gas at this time. Thanks.
