Default Hangar 9 Funtana 90, Which YS?

Hi all,

Just picked up my hangar 9 funtana 90 today, enjoyed the .40 so much I had to get this one. Which YS is best for this airframe for unlimited power?

Your advice would be much appreciated

Thanks & Best Wishes

Joe

No Brainer...
YS-110FZ

91FZ would do well too and if you can find a great deal on it, go for it !!!

I know the 1.20fz is no longer made, but that's what I picked up on eday the other day for $275. I plan on getting a Funtana 90 soon and the YS 120 will go in that.

But I would go with a ys 110 if you can get your hands on one.

If you want unlimited power the 1.4sport will do it. Fuel will be expensive though.
If you are satisfied with O.K. pull out the 110 will work.

Hey the ys 110 has more then enuff power for this plane mine hovers at half throttle and pulls out with ease vertical, just my opinion but im thinking that the 140 will be abit overkill for this plane as your gonna need a bigger tank, bigger prop, bigger wallet to run the thing ,and i dont think you will gain anything form useing it, apart form going up at 150mph instead of 145mph lol

I have to disagree with the "O.K." pull out reference. I have a YS 1.10FZ spinning a APC 16x6 and it has great pull out. Ofcourse the 1.40 sport will have more, but the 1.10FZ is more than just OK. If it was a Saito 100, OS .91 or Saito 91 then yes it would have OK pull out. I have a friend that owns a FT90 with a YS .91FZ and it even had good pull out and the 1.10FZ is a lot stronger than the .91FZ. I know, because I own them both a .91FZ and a 1.10FZ.

A friend who has a FT90 with a Saito 150 and I had a vertical race and it was tied. Ofcourse again the 1.40 sport will have more power, but both engines are more than just OK.

I spoke with Zac West from 3D Batix who competes all the time and owns a FT90 with a YS 1.20 informed me that his 1.20 wasn't as strong as the new 1.10FZ and told me that it had a slower spool up with a APC 16x6 where as the 1.10FZ has great spool up time with the same prop.

Radical RC has a video of a Yak with a YS 1.10FZ spinning a APC 17x6. The video shows the motor to have plenty of power to spin the prop, hover, Torque Roll, etc... with no problem. I do think the YS 1.40 may be slightly over kill, but would definately work.

Just my opinion and observation.

DTB,

What RPM is your ys110 turning the 16 x6 apc and how much does your F90 weigh?

I like my 110 on my 8.5 pound plane, but my F90 would have come in at 9.5 pounds with the 110.

Right now my motor spins a 16 x 6 apc 9500 to 9600 and it is 10 pounds 10oz wet. It does have O.K. pull out, but not Unlimited power.

Thats where I think the "Unlimited" motor choices for this bird are YS140, Saito180, or OS 160FX. When I think Unlimited I think of the pull out power that a DA150 has in the Unlimited TOC planes.

There are many posts reguarding which engine is right for this plane. Most of us can all agree that the Saito 100 is marginal at best. Most everyone else is YS 110 which seems to be the fav followed closly by the Saito 150. I know for a fact that the YS 110 will be just fine on the Funtana 90 however I am a YS lover and a power hog. I can say with confidance that the YS 140 sport a 16 oz tank and you get 10 mins of safe flying. Just running it in on the ground spewing fuel at a rich setting 3/4 throttle I got 17 mins on mine. But watch out for that 140 sport its a beast. I LOVE IT. The weight of the 1.40 sport is that of the 120 when it was available they share the same case. slightly bigger carb and piston maybe 3 oz heaver. No big deal IMO. If you have the money and boys that go clank get the 140 you ll always use it in another plane.

I agree, the 1.40 would be a blast. I have a couple of YS engines and they are power houses totally.

My YS 1.10FZ is spinning a APC 16x6 at 9549 rpm according to my tach. My FT90 RTF without fuel weighs 8.62 lbs and has unlimited vertical about 2-3 click over 1/2 throttle and hovers slightly under 1/2 throttle. I have a 20oz tank and it does this with a full tank. I started with a APC 16x4W which felt like a slipped clutch on a vehicle. Lots of noise with no bite. The APC 16x4 was tached at 10,300. With the APC 16x6, it is unlimited out of a hover until I stop it and I rarely go full throttle honestly. maybe because mine is so light.

I would be carrying about 1 lbs less than you would have been. I lucked out and got one of the light versions that came out first. I modified my plane also with dual tail brace, pinned firewall, beefed up firewall, beefed up landing block, beefed up the wing, scale tailwheel, 5645MG digital servos (heavier) plus other mods I can't think of also.

You can view my FT90 construction page below to see what I did and feel free to look at the other photos:

DTB, How in the world did you get your Funtana to weigh 8.6 lbs?!?!?! I have virtually the same setup, same engine, same servos, etc. and mine weighs 9 lbs 6.6ozs. I am envious.
Thanks,
Barry

Barry, I honestly couldn't tell you how. I bought my FT90 last summer in June or July I think it was. I have one of the first productions that were made (1st gen). I completed mine and weighed it 3 times to make sure that it was correct and kept getting the same results and even checked the scale to make sure it was right, which it was. I think some kits were lighter than the others. I lucked up and got a light version. Maybe the wood itself is lighter in mine.

My YS literally yanks the plane off the ground and goes straight up none stop. Many club members ask me, "what size motor is in that thing?" When I tell them, they can't believe it and say. "I knew YS were strong, but that is amazing". I thought you had something a lot bigger than that.

I have to third or forth that motion for the YS 1.10. I have the Saito 100 in mine and if flies well enough. A guy a my field has the 1.10 and the plane flies great with the power plant in the front even though the guys flying isn't great . I wish I could find a YS for mine. If you can find one, get one

Lee

PS don't believe the poor contruction that you read. The guy at my field knows only full throttle and landing. He hasn't sealed he gaps and flips the plane around like a fish flappin on the dock. Basically, use good servos and you will not have a problem. I have Hitec 5625 running @ 6 volts.

I am not a pure 3D addict and not a speed demon but if I could do it and money was not an issue it will be the YS140 turning an 18x6 and running slightly rich (about 8,500 RPM). With this set up you need not do any mods to sort out the tail heavy problem. My YS110 is lovely (its hot and humid here and i get only about 9,200 RPM max turning an APC 16x6) but I have 6 oz on the nose with a stock set up. Yes, the YS110 turning a 16x6 is brilliant but I would do it with a YS140, the 18x6 will give you tons of thrust and not to forget prop wash. Again, the idle might give the plane a little too much wash on landing.

I did it with a 1.40 while there is tons of power the 140 needs a sturdy'er frame than the F90 give this enigne vibrates more than a Saito 180. And you reinforcments have to be top notch IMO.

Yeah talk about vibration, just got back from the field and I lost my back half of the YS110 muffler ... sigh ... oh well.

Does anyone know the fastest way to get my hands on the ys 110? Tower Hobbies says they will not be getting them in until mid-June.

Also, can anyone confirm the 110 will fit on the stock mount without any adjustments?
