I ordered my Ulti combo (Fuji 43) from Tower Sunday. Yeah, with a $30.00 rebate you can't beat the price. Unfortunately I have to wait, the Ulti is on backorder. I know already the waiting is going to kill me. Should have it before Christmas, though. Untill then my good ol' trusty CE II will get a good workout. I have not desided what servos to buy. Could you guys give me any idea what would work well without breaking the bank?

I agree with Hosam in that more info on the DA50 installation would be nice. I am considering the DA myself. Did you have to modify the engine mount box for the exhaust, and is that a Bisson or Slimline?

Glad to help , the da 50 fit super , I used 3" stand offs. No firewall mods needede .. I pinned the wall thats it .. Exhaust fit fine , I used 2 rudder servos in rear, Ballance is one the money. Batt is in the middle of fus. I hope to fly Tomorow weather permitting. peace

Latest tip, Install an access hatch just behind trailing edge for easier access to install RX. Cut out monokote, CA in balsa frame, use 1/4 inch wood. CA hatch to fit inside frame, use CA hinges and locking clasp to keep closed, recover with matching Mono patch. MUCH easier to go through at that area than to try and wiggle through where the pull-pull servo might be. Also puts RX further awy from engine and batteries. About an hour's worth of work. Pretty slick!. For what it's worth...... MM

OK guys you've convinced me to try this one. I have a BME 50 laying around (after a transmitter failure destroyed AW 29% Katana). anyway, I have not seen much in the way of flight reports. Can someone please post what they think of this airplane. My Katana would wall like no tomorrow, I loved it. I am looking for something alittle different and I think this will fit the bill. Besides at 399.00 with all the hardware, it is a great price too.

I am really interested in what Nitrous Pete has to say with the 50 on the front.

Also MM can you post pics of your hatch suggestion?

and lastly the instructions show drilling holes and pinning the firewall but the pictures are not real clear (this is my first giant that I am building myself) does the dowel go all the way from side to side on the motor box? And if so will it not interfere with the blind nuts?

No, no, the dowels are only 5/8 to 3/4 " long. But make sure you put in at least a couple on each side. And clue them in with epoxy. Otherwise the back put on you .

If the WX holds out for the weekend, I plan to maiden mine. It's powered by a Brison 3.2 which comes out to about 51.2 I think. I still need to run the engine a little and do some range checking.
Will let you know how it performs.

I'd also like to see those pics sounds like a great idea.

I was going to maiden mine yesterday afternooon but while I was doing the last of the running for the engine, I was seeing problems with intermittent radio dropouts. After some checking I discovered a broken wire coming off the battery for the RX. At least I found it on the ground PHEW.

I have a complete Fromeco setup, Super regulated switch and 4800MaH battery so I pulled everything out and replaced it.

SO I figure I'd fly it Thankgiving day or sometime over the weekend but now we have 2 inches of snow on the ground with temps not expected to get above freezing for the next several days and more snow expected sometime over the weekend [:'(]

Guess I'll be waiting a little while longer

Got a quick question of balancing this thing. DId everyone just make a mark on the bottom of the top wing and hold it with one finger which is kinda hard on the finger (old guy syndrome) or did you all make up something to set it on.

Bill, I don't have a way to post photos yet. It's just a simple frame work of balsa just inside the trailing edge of the fuse, a square frame of balsa that fits inside that. Couple of CA hinges with a screw-lock to keep it in the up-locked position. You'll need to bevel the front bottom edge of the balsa stick at the front of the hatch where the CA hinges are. This way, when you open it, the bottom front of the hatch does'nt bind . Also, a mark on the underside of the top wing is about all you can do for the CG, unless, you design a special balancer for it. Does get a little heavy on the fingi tips. Mine weighs in at 17 pound, 5 ounces, with FOX 3.2 . Any body else using a servo isolator ?. MM

I;m a little bummed right now. All the snow melted but we have 20mph winds gusting to 30 and it's 25 degrees out BBRRR. I just weighed mine on my Walmart fish scale and it shows 16lbs 5ozs. Other than servos I have the exact same setup as Dick and he is 2lbs lighter.

Guess I need to go find out what is going on. I think I'll try to find something I know the exact weight of and test the scale first.

Bill, that's the "PITTS" on the weather-hold. A pound lighter on yours huh ?. I'll bet it's because I have a smoke system in mine, also, I shielded my TME smoke pump with a wrapping of thin lead and also "capped" it too [ just to minimize RFI ] I don't think a pound will really be detrimental to the performance on this one. BUT, I can hear what's being thought about the extra weight. What else can I do?. I broke-down and pleaded with the wife [s] to let me finish this one with a Scale YIKES!!! [][X(] Have a nice weekend, MM typo errors not intended

Believe me, guys. If you are after serious performance, you will NEED a 50cc or better, and we all know above 16lbs things start getting rather sluggish - even in a monoplane. This bird is draggy.... 16 + will fly well, but won't be a "3D Monster", for sure.

Weight Check --- SCARY !!! --- With the BME 50, J&A Pitts muffler, JR 8411's/8611's all round - 15 lbs. 14 oz.
This is dry, RTF, includes spinner, wheelpants, "cabane handle", interplane struts. There is NOTHING extra in here to add weight. It's dead stock.

Even if "gasser" is TWO POUNDS heavier than an OS 1.60 (which it is NOT), it's a 14 lb glow bipe..... OUCH!!!
Makes wing loading 25.04 oz/Sq. ft. Hmm.[&o]

I'm used to things being heavier than advertised - but - this is a WIDE margin, don't you think??

Per Keith at BME, I tried the BME 21 x 8. Pull is 23 lbs, 11 oz on a fish scale at the rudder/tailwheel post. That prop is turning 7390rpm. Ran this test yesterday, as I was side-to-side testing against the Taurus (it won - 7490, same prop).

I haven't been able to fly this with the BME motor yet, if you used the Brison 3.2, you'd be right there at nearly 2:1 thrust, too. Yee ha. Local guy has a Brison 3.2 on a WH Extra Special, and it *is* Special. OUTSTANDING performance on that setup - he's using the NX 22 x 8, which is very close to the BME 21 x 8 in performance.

Hey,
If any one is interested,found a neat answer to the smoke tank size problem- I used a rectangular Sullivan 21 oz #388- dropped the
tank end first right behind the fuel tank- fits perfect- used a 2 clunk pickup (1 short ,1 long) with a y- outside leading to pump and filling T- and a 3rd solid copper tube all the way to the bottom(top?) for a vent line- used a 1" wide piece of lite ply across the 2 tanks, to hold, and kept the whole smoke system right on top of the cg-.

Here's a CG checking method that works quite well - for all kinds of planes. It's the "strap and plumb-bob" system... On the Ultimate, it's easier to do with everything assembled, and right side up. Make a "sling", either out of 1" nylon strapping, or strong nylon twine (I prefer strapping; easier to handle on a wing). Mount a screw eye-hook into a ceiling stud over your workbench (or wherever you can hoist your assembled plane). Get a pulley and length of nylon rope. Attach sling to wing (slide it on the top wing by disengaging one side of the interplane system, then reattach it), slide to the center. Doesn't have to be perfectly centered span-wise.

Make a plumb bob that will hang from the point where the sling attaches to the pulley rope. Adjust it's length so it just barely clears touching the top of the top wing.

Hoist the assembled airplane up. Adjust the fuselage in the sling until the stab is LEVEL with the floor. (I check l.e. and t.e. dimensions to the floor; when they match, the plane is level). The plumb will be pointing directly at the center of the balance point.

Sorry - no pics - but I'll do some next time I check balance.

Bubba...I run a standard Zinger 20x10 on my Brison 3.2 that I have on my Hurricane. I haven't measured the thrust, but at full throttle I get 7200 rpm which is pretty darn good. I put a Zinger Pro on the 3.2 on my Ulti. I hope for even better with it.
I will probably post a pic of my Ulti tomorrow as it is supposed to be a "rainout" Sunday. All I have left to do to it is install the canopy and the decals. I'm going back over every item though before I maiden her. Thinking of a pilot before I put the canopy on...was going to put "Snoopy" in there, but a friend of mine beat me to that by putting him in his Extra 260.[sm=frown.gif]
I checked the CG last evening and it was spot on. LUCKY!!!!
