RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I believe the da50 comes with 3" standoffs. They will be fine. My DL50 came with standoffs that were about 2 2/3" I just used some 3/4" cherry blocks to extend to the right place.
Not the best pic but you can see the hardwood blocks I used...
A word of advise build the tail as light as possible. be careful to use little epoxy to join the elevator & fin. Mine is more tail heavy than I would like. The slot that the fin fits in is sloppy. very easy to overdo the epoxy. I was careful but I think I could have done better
Also read over all of the mods in this thread. I used the hardwood wing joiner (cf method is best as is lightest but most expensive) spring/wire gear mod & toothpic mod.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Alright you turds and I mean that with the utmost of respect! It took about 60 pages of this thread but my wallet is now a bit lighter and soon to get even lighter. You guys are having a pretty cool party and pardon the pun I would like to crash it. The promise of unlimited vertical and bouncing this thing down the runway like a dragonfly on a pond has hooked me.
Placed my order with Tower just a second ago.
I'm thinking DA-50 up front probably order it tonight. I'm still up in the air though about power. I think I want to try A123s non-regulated on a Smart-Fly Power Expander Sport Plus and that newfangled Fromeco Kodiak switch. Any opinions on these units?
For servos thinking 5625s in the wings with 7965s on the elvators and a single 7955 pull-pull for the tiller. Sullivan Showtime for smoke.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Robert,
I have two Ultimates, one in Minnesota and one here in Florida. I run them both on a single A123 powering both the receiver and ignition on 2.4ghz. No regulators, but a diode in the power line to the DL50 ignition to drop the voltage a tad bit. I like to keep it simple. You'll love the plane and welcome to the club.

Congratulations! You will not regret owning this bird. The DA -50 will pull it very nicely without adverse wing loading. This is one of Great Planes best models and flys as nice as any other 50cc plane on the market.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Robert,
You will want coreless on every control surface. If u have the wallet, 7985 on everything. If u can still find the 5985 they are good. (I just bought the last that great hobbies had for my extra 260) I have a friend who has this ulti with a da 50 and he has 5985 on all surfaces on 1, 4.8v pack, no power expander. Only the fiber cutt off. I'll tell ya I just about c**** my pants when I saw him ring the living hell out of his ulti. Seriously I watched a flat spin that was SO tight and SO fast it would blow u away. I thought the plane would rip apart. He tells me that is how he always flys it and he has been flying it for 3 years. Tail touches 10 feet in front of me. Oh man I was in heaven!! lol
I went with:
DL50 with a Bisson DA50 rear dump pitts
5985 elevator
5955 rudder (WAY over kill)
5645 Ailerons (far too slow)
all on dual 6v with the power expander, here is what I think:
The tail is AWSOME!! the ailerons WAY too slow. the 5645 on 6v are suppose to be .17 but they feel slower than a 645. Thinking back I should have gone 5985 on everything and in fact if I can find 4 5985 I might just replace the ailerons... If you don't like digital I hear that the 985 coreless are good too, same specs as the 5985 , .13 speed & 172 oz strength but are analog. The 5625 will probably be fast enough and I probably should have gone with them but I was concerned with torqe as this thing can get spinning so hard...
As far as the expander goes, yes it is a good idea however at the last fun fly I was at there were 3 of these ultimates none of which had an expander and all flew great all with 5985 on everything. 2 had 6v one had 4.8v, lol the one with the 4.8v did the most insane stuff.
Lol, I'm still just doing cuircuts for the most part, Here and there I break from it and go verticle and REALLY fast loops as I'm starting to feel the power (still burning in...) I' havent got the cahonas up yet to flat spin it or try a knife edge spin. Soon... I do all that stuff my my sse as I'm REALLY comfortable with it. Honestly the ulti has scared the bejebers outa me a few times, as big as it is man can you ever turn it fast at high speed. And if your not ready for it, over correct/under correct you can go into a tail spin fast. Happend to me 50 feet off the ground once. OH MAN talk about scary, seriously that day I could have used a diaper!! But I pulled out quite fast. My bad trying this stuff to close to the ground and not enough experience with an ultimate.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Just ordered my Ultimate, going to pair it with the DA-50 and slimline pitts (feels really heavy) and Hitech 7955's on all surfaces. Going with the Fromeco Iron Corps for power with fromeco switches. Hoping for a real performer! Anyone know if the Mejzlik 22x10 3B is too much prop for the DA.
Cheers!

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
twn,
Thanks for the advice. As for the 5625s I have quite a few of these after I dusted my f-18 had some extra stock since spares are always good. Spectactual crash and some adrenaline pumping field recovery as parts were scattered far and wide. Word of advice though the f-18 form has a tendancy to turn into a unreferencable black blob when the background on it is golden brown California rice and the plane is blue angels color scheme amazingly this happens at not too far out. The stabs can easily be mistaken for the stubby little wings. Wrong input and bam 80ns later even the 6million dollar man does not exit the airframe!
I'm not a real big fan of the 5645s but the 5625s seem to be geared pretty well your're right they seem to spool up pretty slow. Anyway I assume since the leverage arm is so short for the ailerons and there are 4 of them the torque of the servo is not so important as is the speed. May be able to transfer some of the torque for speed on these surfaces if required. Back in the day we considered 70in/oz servos high torque and they were bigger than the box most servos come in nowadays. As for the rudder servo I'm a little rough on these since I've bent a few over on occasion sometimes my brain doesn't make good choices so I think I want the added torque and TG that you get from the 7955. As for the 7965s these are the replacement for the 5965s. I like that these are pretty hi-res since I have seen reports on here that stock throws on the elevator might be a bit low probably crank up the throw and throw a bit of expo at it while preserving as much resolution as I can. I hope 139in/oz is enough.
I'd kinda like to get away from a power expander since this is just another potential failure point and adds complexity. 50cc is pretty borderline for this type of eq. I kinda like Chuck's idea of running the diode on the ignition. They claim those A123s have a pretty flat discharge rate and I hear rumors that you can charge these things at like 10a without creating a bomb. I'll need to find me an A123 charger thats up to the challenge and look into pack charge delivery that won't melt down.
I've had a number of ultis and tend to fly the pants and monokote off them I even snapped the aluminum cabane mounts on my Dave Patrick. Blew 3 of the wings off and manage to set it down on the rudder. Don't ask me how but somehow I got it spinning and managed to push the nose up to get the tail under it. Couldn't do that again in a million tries. No other damage just missing the top wing and the right side of the bottom wing.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Chuck,
What are you charging your 123s with? I need to be thinking here since I will likely replace some batteries in my other birds and need to choose carefully for balancer/charger. And do you have some specs on the diode you are using? How much voltage drop are you getting? Also what switches are you using?
Sorry for the question flurry but this has now become a mission. I hate when this happens[sm=drowning.gif].

Regarding the diodes, these are a couple of quotes from Bob Pastorello on the DL50 thread
"Actually, it calls for a Diode .... a 1N4007 or something like that is all that is needed per their manual.
I am running both of mine without diode s, and using the 42% Products optical-kill switches and haven't had issues.
If you are very concerned about it, I'd run the diode . It drops the nominal 6.6v of the 2SA123 to 5.9v, and because the A123 stays at nominal for a long time, it really acts for all intents like a regulator."
"A diode voltage-dropping arrangement is much better than resistors. Resistors are power-consuming devices, and reduce voltage based on current flow through them, which also varies based on temperature. A diode is a better solution, as reverse-biased, it consistently "reduces" by .7v across it's P/N junction, up to the full amperage rating of the diode , and regardless (essentially) of the input source voltage. It also will be nearly unaffected by temperatures (within it's rating), and although it isn't regulating the output voltage (neither is a resistor), if the source voltage is relatively stable, then the output after the diode is equally stable and consistent with it's .7v drop.
All in what you want to wire in there.
After using regulators, I will stay with diode s. "
This is Bob's website with more information.

Regarding the switch, this is what I've been using - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPNU3

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Chuck,
Wow, no regulator and 1 battery for both the ignition and the RX if you could tap that reliably for the Skywriter that would be 1 battery for all. Not sure of the draw on the Skywriter but Dave Brown smoke setup uses servo power ...hmmm. Still I'm little leary about mixing RX power with that of the ignition on PCM. I'll probably run the IGN on 1100 and the RX on 2300. As for the Skywriter I'm at a bit of a loss. Maybe reduce the battery count down to 2 by hooking up the Skywriter to the 2300 for the RX.
You know anybody running the single setup with PCM?
Robert

Got mine today, shame that they pre cut the spinner for 2B...oh well. Is it worth converting to a pull-pull rudder setup, never really been a fan of the pushrods.

Does anyone have a spare set of ailerons for this plane, I bought one from towers scratch and dent sale that was perfect except for missing the 4 ailerons, i planned on just scratch
building a set, but I would buy a set if anyone crashed and might have a set. just pm me or call 229-881-7495. Thanks Richard.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well, add me to the club. I was looking for a good home for my ZDZ 50NG (given to me believe it or not), I think we have a winning combination.
Started reading the thread from post #1, decided to read just this year after wading through the first 30 pages (and I'm only up to page 193 so far). I plan on Graphtec landing gear, will look at the various other modifications listed - but so far one question
What's the best "bang for the buck" as far as servos? I'm not currently flying anything on digital servos, so don't have any favorites.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Welcome to the club OldFart1! You're gona LOVE this plane. As far as servos go I don't have much experience with digital servos. But I can say that I like my hitec 5985.
Analog:
985 coreless
Digital:
5985 coreless
7985 coreless
If your gona just fly this thing around on low rates all the time then just go with the 985. 645 will probably do too but they are REALLY slow and the 625 is faster but the torque I think is too low. I would be really concerned coming out of a fast vertical downline with non-digital. I have done a few oops things really low to the the ground and I think if I had analogs in there my plane would be kindling...
Some people are using the 5955 on all surfaces. I guess if you have the money go for it but 340 oz of tourqe on the ailerons is a complete waist. They probably like the titanium gears... I have one on my rudder and ya it is quite fast. Strong man you could jack your car up with that servo. I have a few friends with this plane all of wich are using the 5985 on 6v and 4.8v on all surfaces. I have no doubts that the 5985 is the winning choice. 7985 preffered... (they are the newer version, more resolution...)
If you do go with digitals be sure to get the hitec programmer. Really simplifies centering and end points.
I just bought an Aeroworks 35cc Extra 260/spe43 and I'm gona try 985 on it
Analog:
985 coreless
Digital:
5985 coreless
7985 coreless

I have one on my rudder and ya it is quite fast. Strong man you could jack your car up with that servo. I have a few friends with this plane all of wich are using the 5985 on 6v and 4.8v on all surfaces. I have no doubts that the 5985 is the winning choice. 7985 preffered... (they are the newer version, more resolution...)
If you do go with digitals be sure to get the hitec programmer. Really simplifies centering and end points.
I just bought an Aeroworks 35cc Extra 260/spe43 and I'm gona try 985 on it

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I have a handful of 645's left over - was considering them on 6V for the ailerons - but - would hate to wreck this bird by cheaping out.
Mostly aerobatic stuff for me. Although the plane is probably great at 3D - I'm certainly not. I'll practice with my foam Ultrafly Ultimate first
(checked my spreadsheet - I have 645's, not 625's)

Guys my thinking on the servos is go with high torque servos that way if you go with bigger plane you have the servos all ready. the 335 oz of torque would work on a 45 percent plane. steve

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
a1pcfixer, thanks I just bought it tonight from Tower. I used a $60 discount coupon on it. Looking forward to building this plane. I will be using a DA50 for the motor and hitec 5955 for the tail and 5645 for the wing. I plan on getting better servos for the wing later.
