RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
From reading the posts here on RCU many of the BME Yaks and the TOC Yaks are coming in at 17 pounds. With a wing area of 1350 square inches that is a wing loading of 29 ounces/ sq ft. that is with a DA-50. If this airplane comes in at 18 pounds with a MVVS 58 or ZDZ 80 and the wing area as advertised is correct that gives a wing loading of 28.66 ounces/ sq ft. Those sound like pretty good numbers to me and the power would be excellent with the MVVS or the ZDZ. But it remains to be seen if the numbers quoted from Lanier are correct, we can only hope.

Really? I think that the wing area and span is right on with everything else out there but other than that[:'(]
Compared to all the other planes out there it is like 2lbs overweight. Not to mention every other plane has only 1 aileron servo. You should only need one and if you need 2 the aileron is probably weak and if they build the aileron weak what about the rest of the plane?
Coming in at 16 1/2lbs is still a little bit heavy for the wing area and with a DA50 wich is probably what you need for that weight, it would probably be just a little underpowered. Lanier hasnt built any good light 3d ships like TOC Or EF or BME or Carden Or aeroworks ....
but maybe I am rong or maybe you just want to fly IMAC but $100 more is well worth it for a plane that is just as bbig and 2lbs lighter.

I'll see if I can buy a fish scale today, and when I go there on Tuesday, I'll try to weigh all the components, take some pics, and post here. No guarantees though. You know how it's like when you're married with 2 kids[sm=bananahead.gif]

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
That would be great information, everything in the box would have to weigh 10 pounds in order for this airplane to come in at 18 pounds with a 4 pound engine. It would be good if you would also measure the wing and check the total wing area to see if the advertised area is correct.

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
I emailed Lanier asking about the accuracy of the wing area and if this airplane would build to 18 pounds with a 4 pound motor and 2 ounce standard servos and the included hardware, well they assured me that the information was accurate. I am not going to hold my breath, but hope that it is correct.

Josh,
The other option is a Aerotech Volex like Mark(Rcairflr) has. It is a sweet flying airplane.
So George has a couple on order and they are supposed to be in tuesday, Mark you know were you need to go now.

Easier said than done for me. My showtime is down because I need the Saito repaired. I just crashed my 260, so I'm plane-less [:@]. I need a new home for my DA. My real fear with this one is if it comes out like a big pork and my DA is not enough to haul its ass.

There is still some wiggle room here. 4 pound motor--is this with muffler, spark, ignition? How is the wing area calculated? What would be nice is to have a bare weight of the plane(with hardware) and wing dimensions to calculate wing area.

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
Well... sorry guys. I was going to do all that for you today, but as it turned out, George has already sold BOTH Extra and the Edge.[] I'm bummed myself, as I was hoping to see it in person today. But I was somewhat reassured when he said that they are beautiful, and that they are built light and 3D capable. I take that to mean oversized control surfaces, and lightening holes throughout.
FWIW, he has another one coming in this Thursday, and I'll ask him to hold it for me first. I saw the manual, and the hardware looks pretty decent.

I bird in the hand is better than all two in the bush !
I just bought the Lanier Extra 330 (87" version). Not a single wrinkle - beautiful looking. I will weigh and measure it this evening.

Here is what I got with a digital postal scale:
Rudder 3.2
Wing Half /w Aileron 22.6
Wing Half /w Aileron 22.6
32" x 1 1/2" Wing Tube 8.4
Fuselage with canopy and smoked windshield 53.3
Elevator and Stab Half 3.8
Elevator and Stab Half 3.8
(18 1/2 x 1/2, 7 1/8 x 1/2)Stab Tubes 2.1
Fiberglass Cowl 7.6
Pair Fiberglass wheel pants 3.7
Tank hardware bag 4.8
Landing Gear 10.6
Wheels 1.6
Hardware 8.7
===============
Total 9lbs 12.8oz
You can calculate your own engine, radio, etc. FYI: True Flight Power Point 24x8 prop is 4.1 oz. I don't have the 4 1/2" spinner yet.
Wing Half Dimensions
LE 39 5/8
TE 41 1/2
Root 20 3/4
Tip 11 1/2
Max Airfoil Thickness is 3"
Aileron is 5 1/2" constant and run all but 6" from root.
LE is pretty close to (and looks to be) perpendicular from Root.
I came up with 1278 sq inches - but that is based on flat measurements of
the wing root and tip.
Rudder 3.2
Wing Half /w Aileron 22.6

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
grrr... so you're that guy. I was just going to snatch the Extra.
Well, I learned my lesson, and I asked George to hold it for me. He said he'll do that.
I think the wing area is about right if you add the fuselage area and the ailerons.

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
Would you be able to comment on the construction...
lightening holes, glue joints, wood quality, lazer cut, strong, flimzy, covering, etc, etc?
How about the motor box, strong?
I hear the wings have provisions for two servos per aileron...

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
I agree and once you add the area of the fuselage between the wing, the advertised wing area is accurate. The one thing that concerns me is the size of the aileron, at 5.5 inches it sounds more like a fun fly than a scale airplane. Duanes, could yu confirm the aileron size and did it look a little funny at that size? Sounds like a great size airplane for evolution 58 engine.

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
The aileron size was included in the wing measurements. It appears slightly on the large side as the aileron is nearly half the wing chord at the tip. If I use a flexible tape measure to wrap around the wings, then I think there would be atleast an extra inch or two on the chord measurements.
The fiberglass parts are really nice looking and there is a thick reinforcement pad molded into the wheel pants at the axle point. George commented that it was one of the strongest that he had seen. I like the colors of the extra better than the edge. The covering is in really good condition except fot one wrinkled area on each wing at about the center point of the aileron attachments ( on top). The canopy has a nice smoke tint and is consistent in color.
The engine box is rather nicely constructed and is already pinned. Unlike the Hangar9 Extra 260, the fuse is made of balsa and ply spars and does not have the sheeted foam at the rear.
The wings are indeed setup for dual ailerons. I would say that you could get away with single servos, but I'm going to stick with the dual. Personally, I have a G62 that needs a home. Using JR equipment, TF 24x8 power point prop and dual 4000mah Lion battery, and 8oz of glue, It looks like I'll be several oz under 17lbs. I over estimated the glue to make up for servo extensions, regulator, switches, etc. So this should be pretty close.
I'll be starting construction shortly and will get some pics posted.

Cool!
I want to put a ZDZ 80 on one I have one on a 84" wild hare. it's sub 18 lbs., but I wish it had another 100in of wing area.
I can't wait to see your pictures.

RE: The new Lanier Edge 87"
Sounds like it should be competitive with the WH Extra and Edge. I have always like the quality of Lanier planes but they never would come out with something that is really centered around 3D until now. I cant wait to see the yak in person.
