RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
I am gratified to hear the two servos system saved your plane. I thought long and hard about ripping them out and going for a single servo solution to save weight and hassle. I am now very glad I did not.
Are the adjustable control horn you broke from Hangar 9, the big 1.5' metallic ones?
I would hesitate going with the DuBro arms, simply because they are plastic. I found the SWB hardware to be very sturdy and practically unbreakable... A bit more costly, but definitely worth it long term.
Thanks for the tip on the canopy. I am definitely considering the addition of a fifth lock to fix that canopy better than the 4 screws already installed.
If you look carefully at my engine linkage, there is no metal to metal contact as the connection to the throttle arm and choke arm is done via a plastic DuBro connector (with a metal ball). If I notice interference running the engine, I might replace the metalic rods with CF ...

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
OK - My all up weight (AUW) is exactly 18lbs. which is a little bit above my target weight.
I did not take any big steps to save weight and probably paying for this now. I did modifiy the rudder to pull/pull (for CG) and I am using LiPos.
Can anybody tell me where can I find a CF wing tube and a CF landing gear that match this plane? I mean a product that is intended for it, rather than having to sand the FG tube from the inside kind of thing... Has anybody gotten one for this plane, the Edge, the Yak?
Measurements are:
Wing tube - 1.5' diameter - 31 7/8 length
Main gear - width at fuse 7', width at gear 17', vertical drop 8', material width where it connect to the fuse 2'.
Thanks.

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
Maidened the Lanier Extra yesterday - all I can say is that it is absolutely fabulous. All I expected and more... This is my first real giant scale and my first gasser and the experience so far is great.
I went to the field and there was absolutely nobody. I was counting on the advice and experience of some of our club members, but there was nobody. Never happended to me before on a sunny day (OK, it was a bit windy).
So I'm there, trying to start the engine, getting nowhere and feeling quite stupid. Suddenly this guy comes, says he is from out of town and asks if he can fly (I'm a big believer in inviting guests in this hobby). Next thing, he is pulling shiny wing bags from his truck that say 'Extreme Flight'. Right there I knew I was in luck big time...
I asked him if it was 'The' famous Yak (yes) and if he was using a DA50 (yes) and then asked him if he could help me get my DA50 going (yes). He worked a bit on the engine and we got it going good for a first run on the ground.
Next he flew his Yak and I knew I found the guy to trim the beast on maiden - he was a pretty good 3D pilot and did things with the Yak I could never do with a foamy.
I filled the tank again and he took it up. A few clicks here and there and it was flying trim and holding with no sick input. I took over and started flying around getting a feel for it. It was much slower and more stable than any glow plane I own and felt really good flying, even in windy conditions. Lnadings were tricky as I had to crab the beast in to make our rather smallish runway but it was rock stable landing in cross wind with some heavy rudder deflection.
So that's it. I will fly again today to start trimming surfaces and mixing for knife edge. We have sun in Seattle after a long cloudy spell and we need to make the most of it.
Both LiPos lost 25% capacity in this adventure, which suggests I have enough juice for 5 flights on 1 charge. Fuel tank seems to provide 16 to 18 minutes, running rich on 1:32 mixture for break-in. A few gallons later I probably will go up to 20 minutes after leaning the engine a bit.
I want to thank Mr. Girolami from Vancouver Washington for being so nice, being such a great help and being such a great pilot. This hobby is all about helping other people and it's great when it comes your way at the right time... I also got a chance to see the legend in action - the EF Yak is an amazing machine and 3 lbs. lighter than my Extra on the same engine

congrats. I'd say save your money on those CF stuff until you've fully broken in the engine. I think you'll still be happy with the performance, even at 18 lbs.

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
I am happy so far. Put a couple more flights on the airframe. Seems to be holding OK.
Bent the landing gear already, but I expected that as people on other threads seem to have had the same experience.
Holes in the cowl are getting a bit larger, I'll find some solution to that and fix it.
Wheels a looking pretty rough - I ordered larger and better wheels to replace.
Covering is loosening up very quickly anytime temps are above 70. Had to recook it several times.
DA50 seems to be doing fine and allowing me to do pretty much whatever even at 18lbs.
No screws or bolts have come loose and I check all of them after every day flying.
One things that blows me away is the low power consumption I am going through. My LiPos (two Thunder Power 2S 2100s with Fromeco regs) seem to lose something around 10% after two flights (30min of power), which is incredible considering I have three 8611s, four 8411s and two 811s. Same for ignition - after two flights all I have to recharge is 50Mah.
If I go down on battery size and put in some CF parts, I could possibly reach 17lbs.

Just picked one up for $314.99 shipped... Looks like a fire sale at Tower on all Lanier Kits/ARFs. The Lanier Giant Extra 330 ARF is $299.99 with Free Lanier Hat http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LR6049&P=1 and if you use coupon 010xv for 30 off 300 (expire Feb 29, 2008) its $269.99 plus shipping. There is a $45.00 dollar overage charge and then the normal $8.99 unless your a Tower Super Saver Customer then they way the $8.99 total out the door for me $314.99 couldn't pass that up. Been looking at the 330 for at least a year now.

That's an insane deal.
It's cheaper than most .60 size ARFs out there and very well built.

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
I bought one of these Lanier Extra 330's a couple weeks ago. I put it together and it is a wonderful build. Very nice plane for $299 on sale. Here is a break down of my plane:
DL50
8611a's on elevator
8611's on ails.
5955tg on rudder.
1100mah 4.8V NIMH on ign.
2500mah 6V NIMH on RX
JR MN48 on throttle.
Xoar 22-8 prop.
Dave Brown Spinner.
I used all stock hardware except for some 4-40 ball links on the servo arms. I also moved the aileron servo mount towards the middle of the wing since I went with 1 servo on each wing.
My AUW is 16lbs 1oz. I can't wait to fly it.

Hmmm, ... A built up aileron of that size ... with only one servo ... is probably going to be subject to flexing and possible flutter. I'm pretty sure they went with two servos due to the large 3D size/chord of the aileron and the fact that its an open built up structure.

Many 3D birds have build up ailerons that size.
But then, they were designed to be driven by one servo and have probably made provisions in the structure. As long as the forces are fairly equal and the servo bay is super strong and the linkage on the aileron is hardened and secured,it should work.Maybe keep the throws down for testing and seal the gaps.
Good luck with it.

I have an 87" FiberLite Edge 540 that has ailerons bigger than this with one 8611 in each wing. It's plenty. I'll test it out slowly first just to be sure. But I'm sure it will be ok.

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
Carden wings are solid sheeted foam. That thing ain't gonna flex! It's all about whether it was built with the inherent stiffness to not flex when you consider the outboard areas don't have any support other than the hinge. Most likely the Fibercast 540 has the necessary beef to get by.

I guess one could always sheet the bottom of the aileron, if needed. I remember reading an old article written by Don Lowe stating that if the ailerons are thicker than the trailing edge of the wing, it will help reduce flutter. About 1/16" thicker top and bottom.

RE: New Lanier Extra 330 87"
Most likely the built up ailerons are just as structurally sound as a sheeted foam core wing. It will be just fine. You guys are WAY to finicky about this. IT is only a 50cc plane. Not a 50% er. It will fly fine and I will treat it like a dollar *****.
