DP Extra 330 and YS 140DZ
Has anyone flown a Dave Patrick Extra 330 with a YS 140DZ? Any comments as to the combo would be appreciated. I'm looking for 3-D performance.
Thanks!

I think that the YS 140 will not be enough. A Moki 180 is recomended.

Great Flying!
Great 3d flying....How much does your DP 330 weigh with the 2.10...Have you seen one fly with a gasser? Are you using a gyro at all? Seems really stable in harrier and hover....Iv'e never seen anybody do left harrier rolling circle with right rolls except Higuchi.....Lookin' forward to more videos.

I tried a 140L as it was the "recommended" engine of choice when the plane first came out. I was sorely disappointed and unless the DZ has twice the power, which I doubt, you will be diappointed also. 50CC or large Moki is the way to go. Just my 2C worth

I'm doing some awesome stuff with mine, quite a bit higher though . Gyros aren't necessary to fly this plane 3D, but something with some good power like a large Moki is.

No need for a Gyro in any fixed wing model.. it only teaches you to be lazy... if you cant 3D without a gyro... practise or give up... practise is usually the best thing.... I would appreciate a gyro during inverted harriers looking at the top side.. i keep using the theory that's used when flying the model towards oneself, thus making it go wrong.. nearly got it perfected to a point that i'll bring it really low now.

I agree with Chris540 and Welsh3D, gyros are for those noisy inverted lawn mowers only . No gyros on the planes, its cheating.
Gbond, the plane is about 15 lbs, and I have not flown one with a gas. I am going to get a new Dave Patrick Edge 540T, and it will have one of the new ZDZ 50's on it. Im sure it will be plenty of power, and the weight is about 5 oz more than the moki. This is ok though because the new DP kits are lighter in weight. I probably wont have the components until around January, but I'll keep ya posted.

...now i'm even more impressed!...knowing that you weren't using a gyro - cool stuff!...
...i'll show my ignorance here, but...to do the left harrier rolling circle w/continuous right rolls - to do it rock solid like in the video - i assume you've got to be making some pitch corrections with the elevator while doing the rolls - you can't just hold ailerons to the right...correct?...

Thats how I like to do my harrier rolls....and I can tell you it takes WAY more than just aileron!
rudder...elevator...aileron...throttle are all used to do it right.

I have the DP 330 thatI didn't fly it yet. It has a YS140. So this motor won't make it fly 3D or have unlimited vertical, hover or torq roll? It has a 16x8 APC prop and going to be using 25% nitro fuel

Which YS 140 is it? The FZ or the L or the DZ?
If it is the L or the DZ, I think that you would need to increase the prop size a bit. I have a 16x11 on my 140L, and I think that it is running too fast.

What type of engine does it say it is on the box? I'd say the FZ won't do well, thw L would be lively, but not exellent, and the DZ would be the best of the YS's.

...interesting comments guys - but one thing i don't understand - i thought i'd read where most of the TOC competitors use gyros - am i wrong on that?...

RE: DP Extra 330 and YS 140DZ
I have a 140 DZ and it turns an APC 18x8W at 8400 RPMs on 30% nitro. It pulls my 11 lbs smaller-than-DP-Extra airplane with authority but not that much power to spare. I would think the newer 160DZ would not even be enough for the DP Extra.

RE: DP Extra 330 and YS 140DZ
GYROS are used by some of the DEMO pilots, but are illigal in any competition. Start with a good plane, set it up correctly, and pratice is the best gyro.
I only really learned to torque-roll with my Funtana 40. From there, the larger planes are easier.
Rolling circles and loops and harrier rolls/rolling-circles are done with constant roll rate; the roll, or loop or straight harrier part is done with the correct amount and timing of the elevator and rudder inputs.
Do a search on Mark Leseberg, and you will find interviews and videos on his rolling circle harrier (one is on RCU team, the other is on Scale Aerobatics.com) . He may currently be the best at this, and he recommends 5 hours a day on the simulator to master this. Unfortunately, I don't have the time nor the simulator. But I do fly my planes (check out my gallery below) intensely on week-ends.
Practice hard.....Maybe,.... but above all, ENJOY THE FLYING !!!

RE: DP Extra 330 and YS 140DZ
I had a DP EXtra with a YS 140DZ on it and it was a wonderful combination. No trouble pulling out of a hover. I was using a APC 18x6W and getting 9800 rpm's peak. I flew at 9600 rpm's and it was a blast. Some of the advantages were the light wing loading and great throttle response. Right now the 140DZ is on a Kankge CAP @ 13.5 lbs. It will do anything I am able do. I had a OS 160FX on the DP Extra and it did not make the grade. I would skip the Moki 1.8. If I went to a Moki it would be the 2.1 as there is very little difference in weight so you might as well get the extra power. BTW if you go to a Moki give it a great deal of break in after that it will be a very good engine.
