I had the 72" inch version of this yak last summer. I flew it Electric. Hacker C50 12XL 6.7-1, Thunder power 10S4P 5300 and jeti 77 amp opto. The speed control burned up and caused the plane to crash. I have bought a Jeti 90 amp that should stay very cool with the heatsink. I plan on buying this plane to convert to electric. The 72" version flew great. I cant wait to get my hands on a 73".

Got mine yesterday. Was impressed by the packing alone. Every piece wrapped in plastic then an outer layer of bubble wrap. This is the first ARF I have seen with perfect covering. All surfaces adhered and not one bubble... Once the wife and kids went to bed I was able to start working on it. Got as far as the stableizer and verticle fin installed.
So far, I may have a potential problem with the engine installation. I have a Saito 220 that I would like to use, however, am not sure if it will fit.... Due to the engine's size there is a clearence issue with the carborator and the fire wall. I have the mount from Saito for the 220 that give's the clearence needed, but, then the engine to protrudes to far out of the cowl. Should I cut the center cowl hole larger? I havn't done any measuring yet or tried the provided mount (not sure about the carb. clearence). And what about balance? Any suggestions........??

Feel free to cut the center hole out as much as necessary to provide good clearance, and then of course you will open the cowl area that is directly in front of the head. You might very well have a "keyhole" shaped hole where the circle and head opening ome together. If possible it's nice to have them seperated by some material to help keep things "tight" but certainly is not necessary... Most Yak cowls are completely open...

How far out from the cowl (not the hole but even with the very end of the cowl on the outside) will it protrude? Full scale Yak's have them out there a good bit...

Maudib, using the Saito 220 mount the prop hub would be 7" from the firewall. Do you think thats to much? I haven't tried the provided mount yet...

Yes, I'd say that was excessive... About 1" is more like it... yours will be about 2" and look pretty "out there".

An experienced builder would move the firewall back 1". This would entail several steps, not necessarily difficult.

Looking inside the engine box you will see that the Sidewalls of the engine box are two layers with the inside layer being lightened out.

Measure back 1" from the back of the firewall on all 4 corners and draw a line around the inside of the engine box... this is your new location for the back of the firewall.

Draw a line that is even with the lightening holes in the box sides and cut the engine box off flush.

Fill in the ends of the sides with 1/8" aircraft play... a strip of about 1.25" will be sufficient.

A new firewall would need to be made from 2 laminated pieces of 1/8" aircraft plythen glued in place with the back of it meeting the lines you drew earlier.
When set you can glue hardwood tristock (1/4-3/8") to the front and back of both sides of the firewall.

Last, pinn the firewall by drilling about 4 evenly spaced 1/8" hole int he engine box sides into the 1/4" firewall... about 3/4" deep.

Plugged these holes with epoxied 1/8" dowel rods. Sand the dowels flush when set.

This in effect will move your existing firewall back 1" will be as strong or stringer than the existing firewall... and will take only a couple hours at best.

I'm not saying anyone SHOULD do this, but rather that it isn't a hard process if you have the proper tools and are confident in you wood working skills.

This would put the Saito 2.20 hub 1" outside the cowl... just about right...

Maudib,

I have to pipe up on this one and commend you on the fantastic job you did of describing moving the firewall. the graphics look great. I am not going to need to do this on mine but I thought the post was well written and the graphics are awesome. And in only an hour you developed them.

Anyway, Just thought I had to say something.

Also I have noticed it seems the same group of people like the same planes as me. I am over on the Ulti 160 thread as well and I have seen a few of the same people on this one too. I am really thinking about this one as the replacement to my WH "baby edge" I think I have all my radio problems figured out (I bought a 9C Super) and now i have a Saito 180 laying around looking for a home. Once I get the Ulti ver 2.0 off the bench I will probably order this one.

Thanks for all the help you have given me and others I am sure.

John

Thanks for the detailed notes.. I will consider, but, I'm not sure i'm comfortable cutting back the fire wall although it does appear to be a simple procedure. I may be able to loose that inch using the provided mount. I will check the carb. clearance... I do have a well broken in Saito 180 as well...:0)

Jeyre,

Thanks... knowing it's appreciated maeks it worth the while. I've learned so much from RCU that I think it only fair I give back.

Emvin, I certainly don't blame you... a person should feel comfortable with the procedures they perform and have the utmost confidence in their plane.

At 5 7/8" from prop washer to back of carb... that leaves you only 1/8"...

If you can find a more adjustable mount like this one:

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=SEA3082

You might get the engine within 1/8-1/4" of the firewall...

I'm sure that 1.80 would rock this plane as well.

Sorry to hear about your yak 72. I'm a die hard electric guy who decided to give Saitos a try in a H9 funtana 90. I wanted to convert it, but batteries stopped me at the time even though I've always thought that the batteries would be cheaper in the long run. I'm interested in what you did with your 72. what prop were you using & did you have clearance problems with the prop? I'm thinking of using one of the new A60's I saw this other thread where a guy bought one at toledo & the hacker guys told him that the A60L (cannot remember the wind, but I think it was the mid one & he said Hacker told him that the motor would throw around a 17-18 pound plane, I've always liked the instant excel of e-planes. any thoughts on this? Has anyone ever considered or used the flat twin 182 from saito in a plane the size of th 73? I one like to use one if I hear good feed on it. I would think that it would be alot smoother that the 180 saito. Also has anyone though of using the new zenoah 26 gasser from horizon? It is in the size range for the yak & it is supposed to fit in a 60 size plane

Thanks in advance, Bruce Freeman. Also thanks Maud for reply earlier.

All,

Servos....let's talk servos.

I was going to go with JR Sport ST125MG's on the ailerons and elevator halves. This servo has metal gears and can get 125 oz-in at 4.8V, and I was going to use a 6V system. Also, I was going to use a JR 8231 on the rudder (it's only 82 oz-in at 4.8V, so I may opt out of this one and go bigger....I just had this lying around).

Now, according to the manual, QQ says to get servos with at least 130 oz-in of torque.

I have used Hitec 645MGs on other 1/4 scales without a problem and they're in the 133 oz-in range at 6V.

My other alternatives would be Hitec 945MGs analog (153 oz-in at 6V), Hitec 5645MG digital (164 oz-in at 6V), Hitec 5945MG (180 oz-in at 6V), etc. I'd like to stay around $50 per servo if I can.

So.....maybe I should lean toward the 5645s or maybe the 5945s.....thoughts?

Thanks,

Rich

BTW: I'm on the list, and they called me Thursday, but I have to wait a week before I can order to get some additional $$$ (selling another plane).

I'd have to agree with John, that was really nice of you to take the time to do up the graphics for everyone. Wouldn't he be able to salvage the original front bulkhead of the fire wall from the one that is whacked off? Also, what did you use to do the graphics?

Thanks, Bruce

I guess the first thing to consider would be what kind of flying will I be doing. Aggressive 3D flying puts alot more demand on the servos. Its recomended to use high torque digital for that. But, If thats not your style you probably dont need such a high end servo just high torque metal gear...Like the 645....

I have a set of 645's as well, but, I am flying 3d now (intermediate) and am pretty sure I will be getting the 5945. Trouble is there expensive!!! I'm seeing the 5945 for around $80 -90...Once I have them the expence wont matter any more and will probably be glad to have them........

bfreee,

I'm a professional media designer by trade, and I used Photoshop to do up the graphics... nothing fancy but hopefully illustrative.

With a little work, yes the original firewall could be saved, but since it's notch and keyed into the side walls and already has tristock glued front and back... a good deal of "whacking and cleaning" would be necessary to prepare it for reuse.

I realize that not everyone has aircraft ply laying around, but a small 12x12 sheet of 1/8" 5-ply aircraft ply can be had for $3 here:

http://www.lonestar-models.com

That would be enough for the whole project.

I'd probably shoot for a couple sheets of 12x24 just to have it handy... I like using small scraps for servos rails as opposed to liteply...

Beausol,

Good advice from EMVIN. If you want 3D you'll want the minimum servos Quique suggests. Otherwise what you suggest would be fine for sport flying.

Servos are like most everything else, you get more when you pay more.

For the money you can't beat the 5945... I'd say it's the best bang for the buck in it's class. Which is pretty much a premiere servo.

The 5645's are nice to with a little more slop in the geartrain and a little slower. But powerful and good quality yes.

You'll want at least a 5945 on the rudder if you want to KE loop and no blowback on hi-g moves...

Call Don's Hobby Shop http://www.donshobbyshop.com/ (800)972-6273

He offers 4 X 5945's for $75 ea. and a great price on 4 X 5645's too...

I spent some time looking at servos and I think I'll probably go with 4 HS-5645MG's and 1 HS-5945MG on 6v. That would get you strong digital servos with average speed on the ailerons and elevators, and a very strong and fast servo on the rudder. Tower sells the 5645s in 2 packs for $96 and the 5945 for $90 so the total is $282 - $30 promo. That puts good servos right at $252 which is only $80 more than 5 ST125MGs which would be the absolute bare minimum.

Bfree, I was using a 20 x11 apc e prop. I had about an inch of prop clearence when the plane was level. I am also interested in the large hacker outrunners. This is a great plane to convert. I already have the C50 12 xl so that is what I will use. The 10S lipos are kind of expensive but you dont have to buy fuel all the time for gas. The electric pays off for itself slowly. I hope to have one flying by summer.

I have the HT 5645s on my BME Yak.Their on the elev. and ailerons. and the big 5955 for Rudder. Their all running on lith-ions 6v. So far they seem like a great servo. I would deffinetly go with a strong rudder servo. It's the most demanding surface..

Ok, got my tracking number. I'm really excited!!!! I don't know when mine will make it into the air (probably end of summer because I just bought a motorcycle) but that just gives me plenty of time to build it right and wait for a screeming deal on an OS 1.60 or maybe even a BME55.

If anyone is interested, PAC Hobbies in Smyrna TN had a used YS 140 for I *think* (don't hold me to it) $275 when I was in there last Saturday.
Not sure on the condition but if you're interested, give them a call. (615) 220-0655
