Keep in mind that the root of the wing recesses into the slot... the actual root rib might be tighter,,, then as the taper of the wing takes over, it leaves a gap... You can't really fill this as the wing root needs this area to be inserted/removed... unless you are saying that you have that much plus...

Sorry, I neglected to say that this opening is at the trailing edge of the wing to the trailing edge of the cut out opening. It's not a serious fix, a piece of ply and cover it with covering from the stab that was removed for the glue area. Just thought I'd mention it.

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
Well my momo arrived today... this should prove a very interesting project indeed...
A HiMax HC6320-250... I'll need to run 10s lipo and an APC 19x10E on it (was originally hoping for 8s and may still with a 20x8E)
The motor comes like many small ones do with a "cross" mount to mount the motor in front of the firewall and a prop shaft that attaches to the "back" of the motor... I've attahced them in the first pic.
Then I used some excellent standoffs from http://www.forgues-research.com (He makes them custom to any length and tapps both ends to your specs. THey come in natural (silver), blue or red and are resonably priced. I use them on my gassers too...
The motor with mount and standoffs as you see in the pics weighs 25.2 oz... A good 15 oz lighter than a 1.60 with muffler... Of course I'll make that up in battery weight, but I won't have to add 16oz+ of glow fuel at the start... I'm guessing I'll be about the same weight at takeoff as thew 1.60 setup.
This will be my first larger electric (besides a 33% Yak I am doing for my DVD).
The rest of the pics show the size of the washing machine motor...

I forgot to mention that this will develop almost 2000 watts at 60 amps... or somewhere around 170 watts per lb... Should be a really nice match...
It can also peak at nearly 2400 watts for breif periods... and draw 72-73 amps...
Not bad for a $199 electric motor...

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
I'm really interested in getting this plane. It will be my first gasser (I have a modified Zenoah G26, bored to 29 w/EI in mind for it), and much more plane than I have ever flown outside of G3, so I won't be building/flying it this summer very likely. I still have a few more 40 size planes that I want to work thru before taking on something like this, but I don't want to miss a chance of getting one by waiting a few months.
Can someone give me some of the finished dimensions?
Length from tip of spinner to back of rudder
Height from tail wheel to top of rudder
Width of elevator.
Thanks
Mike

You'll be approximately 70" long tip to tip... with the backplate sticking out 1" and the spinner about 4" long...
Elevator/stab is 28.25" wide
Height at rudder (and canopy) is about 17"-17.25"

I may be ready this Saturday. Just mounted the motor and throttle servo. A few more items left. They are calling for rain this weekend so that may keep me grounded.

I posted earlier the "in-the-box-in-the air" weight... Just under 6.9 lbs. So fudge 7... Add 1lb for servos, extensions linkage. Then you receiver/battery/switch... 8oz on the high side...
8.5 lbs before motor.
You should be right at the 12 lb mark if you build light...

thats good news Maudib, my 72 came in around 10.8 lbs with the 160 OS. now if i can figure out what engine to use and keep it light, and make enough power to 3D it will be a wonderful world and i'm a happy guy.

You should know that I have a scale at the house. How do you think I know the AUW of my Big Boy?

interesting, lets see what the price will be
I can't say I was too found of the 400 price tag of the original, hopefully this will be in the 300 range[8D]
I know it will fly good because it is by QQ aircraft.

Thanks for the dimensions Maudib! I think it will just fit in the back of my Jetta with the back seats down, and the front passenger seat pushed forward I'm really hoping to hold off building a plane trailer for a bit longer.
I went ahead and ordered mine yesterday, and it should be at the house on Monday! I won't be building it right away, I need to save up for the servos, and some of the little things that add up.
What is the scale of this plane?
Mike

what is a good wing loading for 3D on the 73" yak? if what i'm trying to do work out mine should come out aroung 27 to 28 oz per sq inch. is that good, fair or bad?

33%+ planes often come in at 30... as the plane gets smaller seems it needs to run a little lighter to offset the "air scale" difference.
Some of the lightest 3D Scale planes are 25 oz. sq. in. so I think you'd be pretty happy at 27-28 and have the gas benefits to boot.
More of concern would be power to weight ratio, and you sjould be good there too...

i know you didn't ask me but if you are running glow a perry pump is the way to go. you may be able to make it run without it but it will lean out on uplines and be hard to keep tuned right. hope this helps

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
I've seen it go both ways. On a GP CAP 232 1.60 I just finished for review, I elected to use the 1.60 stock with the tank in what I thought would be a trouble location. Low and a good ways behind the firewall.
To my surprise, the engine was a breeze to tune, needing only the high end tweaked to peak and backed off about 3 clicks for rich running.
The engine doesn't sag on uplines at all and in general runs perfectly in any orientation.
I also am running just 10% Nitro fuel (I won a jug at a funfly and had it on hand) and it loves it. Even brabd new it starts on the VERY first compression strokes, idles superb and runs very well.
Long answer to a short question... I like to keep things simple when I can. I would certainly setup the plane without a pump/regulator.... THEN if I had issues with fuel feed, I'd look at fuel selection to see if another forulation would do better and finally turn to a pump/reg if all else failed.
I hear of plenty of guys running pumps/regs with great success... drilling crank pressure taps, etc. My take is that if O.S. thought it needed thes things to run tops, it would have designed it such. Pumps/regs also introduce the possibility for them to gum up, stick, get dirt, etc... and then the hair pulling begins.
After I do an electric setup, I may also do a 1.60 install.... and I intend on not using any pump/reg... I'll use medium size fuel line (don't use large as some suggest) this actually reduces pressure as it has to push more fuel through the line.

Maudib, do you think this plane will require a fuel pump due to the set back position of the tank?

Yeah, I would like to do without it if possible as I have never used one....What do you think about moving the tank foward 2-3"? That way there will be less fuel line / less of a pressure issue. I am using a 24 oz tank with a Saito 220..

Has anyone got a glow version flying yet. How did the balance come out, and the final weight.
I'm undecided on either the Saito 180 or the OS 1.60, and wanted anyone who had any flight time with either of these motors.

I'd stick to stock... pushing it forward will also make for a wider change of CG as the tank empties..
Why adjust for a problem you don't even know you have?
