Not that is any of my buisiness but the ZDZ40 is a heck of alot of engine for the 73" QQ Yak.

It's probably too much... uh... dog gone it... you just went and sold me on it...

It's lighter than the 3W28 and other 25-35cc engines out there.

It's either that or electric... I don't care much to power my personal planes with glow.

It would ALSO be *really* nice to know - without a doubt, or certainty - that the BME Extreme 55 truly WILL be available in April/May. Having that motor on the market, if as prototypes and Keith have stated, means a whole FLEET of "160" size glow planes can have a really good gasser option.

Imagine this QQ on that BME 55...... <drool>

Perfect! That will be good timing for me. My Saito 180's getting a little antsy in the box....it needs to be let loose.

I'm looking to get JR Sport ST125MG's for ailerons and elevator, and I have a JR 8231 digital servo for the rudder, and I'm going to use a 6V system.

I'm going on withdrawls....haven't flown in a while....to much work to do around the house!

Yeah, I didnt think I would like my BME Yak color scheme either. But with some bling like you said,well check out my BME!!

After searching and searching I'm still torn on which yak to get this summer. There seems to be plenty of good options in the 50cc class but I'm not sure I'm ready to step up to an airplane that big (biggest airplane so far is a 40 size). Besides by the time you spend the extra money on the bigger airplane, stronger servos, and gas engine your going to be into the gasser at least $500 more. I can by a lot of glow fuel for that kind of money, and the smaller airplanes are a little easier to transport.

Out of all of the glow powered yaks this one looks the best by far, I really like the low wing setup, and I like how it's scale looking, but modified where needed to make it fly better and Quique's setup and flight manual is also a really nice touch.

I guess the question becomes: Is gas really $500 nicer? Is there another glow powered yak that even comes close to the QQ?

Thanks for the nice words... I def. think the bigger flys so much better. I also have the QQ72" and absolutly love it...Flys the IMAC stuff as well as the 3D stuff with the same CG setting.. I don't think I'm goin to go out and get the 73" right away. I can't see it flying that much different then the 72",but you never know..

I'm also a current owner of the 72" and am on the 'anxious list' for the 73". For adding bling to your planes, don't forget to give some time to the cockpit. Take a look at my 72". This is a product I stumbled on in another thread. outside of the weight of the pilot, there was maybe 1oz added to the canopy weight with everything installed. Talking with QQ, his cockpit size will be the same for the 73" and 72" kits.

Go to wrightrc.com to see more layouts. Only downside is that the canopy is smoked. Going to ask WAyne if they make a clear canopy for the 72" and 72" kits.

Yes, gas is that much nicer and not that much more expensive. Right now chip hyde's 50cc Vision is on sale for $379 at Chief which is about the same price as the small QQ Yak. You can get a 4 pack of Hitec 5945's and one 5955 for about $300 and BME 50cc for about $600 or the DA for a couple of dollars more. Might sound like a lot but add up what the 72" Yak will cost and it won't be too much less. Factor in $2 a gallon for fuel and you'll be even in a year.

I had a QQ 72" (very nice plane) and I have two Visions. I sold the Yak.

I have to agree with George E .... I have a 30% Yak (transporting/assembling/workshop hangar-ing hassles), and a 77" Goldberg Yak, with a Brison 2.4 gasser. Next up is the QQ on this thread....I've had several of lots of different sizes.... and I think all of us have to reach a decision point on "performance value v.s. hangar/transport hassle" to really sort it out. Stuff under 80" for me is better - less transport headache, a LOT less hangar-headache, and performance is pretty darn good, particularly when able to hang a good smaller gasser on the nose.

Ultimately - I probably will have the Goldberg and QQ Yak's, and the little one..... the big one just is beyond my "hassle zone", and is actually listed on RCU for sale.

Flight reports of the initial QQ Yak's, in **ALL** sizes indicates that he really has his act together in the design arena, even if he "can't" choose a good color scheme.

maubib - work with me to "bling up" the QQ, will you????

Well, all of this gas vs glow talk just makes me think even more that it's all personal preference. This QQ Yak isn't a 50cc airplane. He makes one for that.....for $700.

For this one, I have a Saito 180, that I got new for $325, 4 JR Sport ST125MG's for $34 each, one JR 8231 that I had already, a 6V battery and the plane. I should be in for about $950.

A 50cc would be $650 for the engine (unless you bought a Fuji, but then you get the extra 2 pounds of weight), $400-$500 for an OK plane ($700 for the QQ), $200 min for analog servos, $350+ for digitals, etc.....a minimum of $1200-$1400 or so.

Even putting a gasser on the 73" YAK....I just can't see putting a heavier engine on it than it needs. The price difference between gas and glow fuel just doesn't wash with me for this size of plane, either. The money I'd save with a glow engine vs gas would pay for about a year's worth of glow fuel for me, and I'll probably sell the plane by then anyway. I've had an OS 1.60FX before, and it didn't burn that much fuel. I saw one person argue that the weight savings with glow engines over gas was cancelled out by the much bigger fuel tank you needed to carry around with it....sorry, but I think the fuel tank size would remain about the same. I'm going to be using a 20-24oz tank in this plane with the 180, and I would think a gasser would need that much too, unless you wanted to land in 8 minutes.

It depends on the type of plane (YAK, CAP, Edge vs Piper Cub, Rascal, etc), the size, and ultimately, the pilot's preference.

I'll be happy with the 180 on this plane.

I'm also happy with the Brison 3.2 on my GP Christen Eagle II, but then again, I couldn't see trying to lug that beast around with any glow engine....LOL.

For my trainer, I'll just stick with a 0.40 glow.....a 50cc gasser on that may be a bit overkill.

Ok, I'm all for gas engines but I think I want to stay around $400 in a 72-74" yak. Between transportation and the extra airplane and servo costs, I think this size is perfect for me.

That said, what gas engines are really viable on this plane? The Evo 35 is 3.3lbs bare so I think that will be a little heavy, I think a 50 would be way to much, so that leaves:

BME44 (2.6lbs) (though the BME55 would be even lighter and more versatile for future airplanes)
ZDZ40 NG (2.4lbs)
Brison 2.4 (2.74lbs)

I like the idea of the ZDZ since it is light and it's a rotary valve engine. Since I live in Alaska my other hobby is snowmobiles and I have a 670cc rotary valve engine in my wifes sled and the throttle response is really good since you can statically time the intake valve. But I have also heard that people don't like now noisy the RV can be.

At this point I'm thinking:

QQ 73" yak
ZDZ40RV NG
HS-5625MG servos on elevators and ailerons, HS-5945MG on the rudder using 6v system.

Thats about $400 for the plane, $600 for the engine, and $450 for the flight pack, which is still $1400 in the air. I could cut costs by moving to analog servos for about $100 cheaper, and I could get a 140YS for $130 cheaper, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

Thoughts?

beausol: I run a saiton 180 in my 72" yak and it uses fuel very conservatively. I went from a moki 1.8 in my cap to a saito 180 in this yak and I was surprised by how little fuel it actually uses.

Personally I would stay away from the ZDZ motors. I know a guy that has two of them and they are so hard to start. When they start they run great.. But getting it started is somthing else. I swear he flips either his ZDZ50 which he sold or his 120 twin like 30 times before they start.. He gets very frustrated. DA really needs to get on the ball and make a smaller size just for this application.. the 50 is awesome second flip it's goin...

That's typical of an RV motor, my 670 in the snowmobile takes some pulling to get it running, but when it's going, it's pretty strong. I have found the trick to RV engines is to install a primer and know just how much fuel to give it. Any other issues with the ZDZ other than starting?

BME55 or the new ZDZ40RV-FAI neither engine is available at this time of course... and I'll be surprised if they become available before June...

This is the odd size for gas... the proper weight engines don't make enough power, proper power engines make too high a wingloading.

Once the 55 comes out this will set these large glow planes on their ear... Probably need to switch to 3 blade props... but talk about quiet and powerful!

And the ZDZ40-FAI with rear exhaust would be EASY to attach a CF tuned pipe to...


I think electric might be an interesting option too... a little costly... but clean and powerful too...
