Tail wheel assembly,

If anyone is interested in beefing up their tail wheel so it doesn't wreck the LE of your rudder, here is how I do it on all my taildraggers. If it's a kit I add a hardwood block and then use a nylon tailwheel housing. Then I make a U shape out of aluminum and run the wire which has fuel tubing around it along the bottom of the rudder. I drill a hole and bolt the U shaped aluminum onto the rudder through the hardwood. I removed a small piece of covering on the Funtana and put in some a hardwood block, recovered it and then bolted the wire in place. The fuel tubing takes up shock and vibration. Here are pictures.

NCIS,

In my case, with a gap in the leading edge on ones side and a gap in the trailing edge on the other side means the housing for the wing tube was glued in off center. A 3/16" gap is a lot but I think it will be fine. Maybe a couple good hard snaps will line it back up .

My wing fits with about .015 max anywhere...and that is after about 100 hard flights. I think I would send that back to H9...or at least take a picture of it and send it to them to see if they will send a new fuse. They probably want the old fuse though.

Will the OS 120AX fit inside the cowl or does a hole have to be cut? Anyone have any pics of the side of the cowl if it has to be cut and the bottom for cooling?

Zippi,

I agree with tsyssa. I would send it back. You should get what you pay for. If thats off then maybe the whole plane might be twisted and it won't fly worth a darn. Get a new one.

I know I would not be happy if mine was off that much...but then again...I'm and engineer and develop all kinds of tight tolerance parts. Normally, if I am off by .003 or .004 then the parts are garbage....normally dont even talk in fractionals....its just what I do.

I put the wings back on tonight and took a really good look at the problem. Now that I have looked at it better the right wing panel has a little bit of a bow in the middle so I might try and sand it and the other wing panel is not as bad as I first thought. This thing is a quick build. I got everything hinged, landing gear and wheel pants mounted, all servos installed and linkage hooked up, elevator braces, and my new SIG tailwheel assembly all done. Just need to mount the engine and throttle rod and glue the canopy on and I'm done.

then why do they tell you to mark out the holes in the manual?

thats just silly, but really nice of them to predrill the holes though.

ZIPPI

the O.S 120 fits perfict, well as far as im concerned. one small hole in the side for my glow stick to fit into, but the bottom needs some tooling, i have the pits muffler so i had to cut a hole across the bottom front where the can lays and then a larger oblong hole for the pipe's, but it still looks clean.

Almost ready eh Zippi?
You ever fly a foamy before? the X100 kinda flies like a giant foamy, its fun.I think you'll like it.Put lots of throw in it and lots of expo.Be careful if you have a flameout,it has drag and bleeds of airspeed instantly,so be ready to get the nose down right away. The 120 is reliable though.Good luck

Yeah, I almost have it ready. Looking for Sunday to be the day to maiden it. I used the Bisson pitts muffler and had to hack the bottom of the cowl up but it looks ok. When I put the cowl on and got the prop shaft centered in the cowl I noticed something really funny. When you stand in back of the plane and look at the cowl its really off to one side. Not really much I can do, the prop shaft has to be in the center of the cowl. Anyone else seen this on their plane? Looks kinda bad really [:@].

nitro wing,

I had the OS 120AX before in a Seagull Laser 200. Very nice engine. Good low idle and smooth. That's why I got another one.

I left the cowl centered to fuselage, shaft did not hit either. Looked great. You have to remember the built in right thrust, your spinner should be a little off center from cowl, you dont want cowl to be off center.

Acually the cowl should have fit straight on the fuse with the engine shaft in the center of the cowl which is doesn't. Poor design I'd say. First time I've ever seen this.

Man...measuring 18.6 lbs of pull in the plane yesterday...what fun this plane is!!! I can rocket out of 30 foot hovers all day and just smile...afraid to go lower with the wind though.

I have kind of a crappy video...but still have to convert it to mpeg....why can't anyone hold the camera steady!!!???
This weekend should be better...at least it will be 75 out and not 95 degrees/90% humidity like yesterday during flying...sweat kept falling into my eye - really annoying!

...maybe I will get another pound or more because of the colder denser air!!! This should be crazy...just waiting for the firewall to come out, but over 100 flights and still it doesnt give lol! I cant imagine a 2:1 thrustto weight ratio on this plane...ludicrous!

Wind and more Wind,

Tomorrow is supposed to be calm enough to fly. I hope it is so I can go out and fly my Funtana some more. So far just one flight because of people on and near the flying area looking fo a crashed plane. They spent two hours looking and the next day I went out and found a farmer harvesting his wheat. I asked him if he could keep a look out for it and sure enough a couple hours later he called me and said he had it. I don't know why the guy's thought they could find it in a ready to harvest wheat field. It had to be at least 2' deep. So our rules say no flying when anyone is in or out of the flying boundries so I waited until I finally gave up and went home. The next day was real windy so thats when I looked for the farmer.

I finished my Funtana today and it's ready for the maiden flight tomorrow if the weather holds. The tailwheel I added stands the plane up really nice, kinda gives it an aggresive look. With the HS-5645MG Digital servos in the rear and the added tailwheel I had to add 3 oz to the nose to get the CG at 6 5/8" and that is with the battery pack next to the fuel tank and the receiver behind the throttle servo. I fired the OS 120AX up today and ran a couple tanks through it and it purrs like a kitten. Can someone tell me what the throws should be in inches?

Zippi,

I had to put my 6V battery pack up next to the fuel tank also for it to balance correctly.

I took my Funtana 100 out this morning for the maiden and it flew great. With the CG at 6 5/8" the plane is tail heavy. At 6 5/8" the plane will climb when inverted, you have to pull back on the stick, this is not a good thing. I got three flights in and on the fourth is when desaster hit. I got hit and the plane just went crazy and I had no control over it. I yelled to the guys in the pits that I'm getting hit and everyone check their radio but while the plane was doing it's own thing and heading for the woods it went full throttle and in a clearing behind the trees. It's a total loss. The OS 120AX might be ok but I'll have to start it and see. The muffler stayed on and the prop didn't get broke so that's a good sign. It was a bad day.

That bites Zip...

Double check your Battery, you may have lost voltage if the plane flew fine 3 flights and suddenly lost it on the 4th... Thats a good sign of bad battery or low voltage condition...

I hope all your gear survived and all you need is another airframe...

Good Luck,

Hibrass

That stinks,it hit full throttle? and the prop did not break? Maybe the motor is OK
Good thing you can get another for 200 and it will take you 1/2 the time to make it.Hope things arent too bad

I checked all the gear with a new battery and it was the receiver that went belly up. I switched to a different receiver and everything was fine. Well, it's hard to guard against a receiver going bad. It's been over three years since I've lost a plane so I guess it was time to pay the pipper . You have to give up a plane every few years don't ya? Isn't that the unwritten rule . I guess I'm good for a few years now.
