RE: FUNTANA 40
Saito don't make 2 strokes! but that aside, I have a Saito 82 with a 14x4W prop. power to wiegtof this unit is very impressive and should be ample for the F40. The 91 will give more power but with added weight which is not worth the tradoff for 3D. There is a very good review (Link below) that covers a Saito 100 and the 72. Its worth a read.

Only other issue with anything greater than an 82 would be keeping the speed under control. The F40 isn't a speed bird!.

RE: FUNTANA 40
I have a friend who has a saito 91 in his.He says the plane is twitchy but also says that if i learn to 3D this plane Ill be able to fly any plane cause it is has some bad flight characteristics, like lots of wing rock.Another guy at our club is building a katana 40 with a 100 saito,so im gona see how that one goes then maybe get that motor.

RE: FUNTANA 40
warren, I have the Saito 91 in mine and have found out that the 82 or even the 72 would be a better. I think that the 91's extra weight is the problem. Also there's a thread about changing the leading edge of the Funtana to make fly better. It's very easy to do and I've done it to mine but haven't flown it enough yet to notice the difference. The guys on the thread that have done it swear by it.

Could do with a link to that thread. I subscribe to the 3D threads and have not picked this up. Could you add more on this.

RE: FUNTANA 40
I saw the video of ZAK WEST flying it with a saito 100 and that motor just pulls the plane around like its a piece of paper.Thats definitly overkill, didnt seem to have any weight problem so i think the saito 91 would be the perfect choice.I need enough power to get me out of trouble so thats why id say 91.Anyone here flying it with that motor that has any weight problems.

RE: FUNTANA 40
Hey guys, thanks for the LE mod link - two up! This is still a hot debate and worth a gander if you have or are considering buying an F40.
My 82 goes like a train - more power can get you into as much trouble as out of it. Weight is the issue, and yes, ZAK made it sing but then he's an exceptional pilot (wouldn't of been asked to review the thing else) so I would expect him to be on top of it. Most of us have a long way to go to be that dialled into 3D.

RE: FUNTANA 40
Can anyone tell me where the throttle position is when hovering the funtana 40 with a saito 72, 80, 91 and 100.Some say its 1/4 with the 72 and others 3/4.

RE: FUNTANA 40
82 on only Irvine Contest 10% with a 3kg (6.1lb) F40 hangs at a tickle over 1/2 on a 14x4w APC. Full power gives it unlimited climb, well, limited by how good your eyes are. The great thing about the 82 is that it is the same physical size as the 72 but weighs less (bored out cylinder) and kicks out more power. 91 weighs more. For power to weight you will find it hard to beat the 82. The 91 is also longer so you will have to start messing around with the mount to get it to fit into the cowl.

RE: FUNTANA 40
Yeah, The 91 I put in mine was fairly easy to install. I think I had to move a couple of T nuts on the firewall but it wasn't too bad. The 91 fits in the cowl just fine but all in all I'd rather have an 82 in it.

RE: FUNTANA 40
I have a Funtana 40 with a Saito .82 (14 x 4 apc w prop) 6 lb with a 1400 mah rx bat. I use 20% fuel with 20% synthetic oil. The plane hold at less then half throttle (at 1410' alt.) Pull out is not a rocket but Ok. My Funtana as no tendency to tip stall in any flying condition. Takeoff and landing with or without wind is very easy.
This plane is not for beginner, you have to master acrobatic sport trainer before if you want to have fun with it and do what it is suppose to do.
Sorry for my English!

RE: FUNTANA 40
Definitely 100!! Its a little bit weight vs 91, but more power. If you want really 3D freestyle go for saito100.I am flying with 10% nytro and its more than enough power. Sometimes, I am flying funtana40 with smoke system, and havent problem with power.

RE: FUNTANA 40
Mine has a Laser 70 4 stroke in it. I absolutely love this engine, as it has never once quit on me (fingers crossed) and has plenty of pull-out power. Actually, I have really started to enjoy the plane of late as well! Am getting pretty good at hovering it, and have spent the last couple of days trying to 'low-pass' it inverted, and getting the rudder on the ground! But, four of these resulted in landing inverted! Three times, the rudder pulled off it's hinges, and once... no damage at all! If I smashed this plane up tomorrow, I reckon I would happily go out and buy another. But, if you were looking for an alternative, what would you consider, bearing in mind that it would have to be the same weight, or maybe a little lighter?

RE: FUNTANA 40
Warren, I fly mine on a saito 80, and have seen a few of them fly here in cape town. Mine will hover at just over half throttle, pull out is adequate but not ballistic. Think the 82 will be good, if you want to learn 3D and some IMAC type flying, the 91 would be great if you can get one, the 100 will require carefull throttle management.
As a couple of guys have said, It is not the best plane to leard how to fly 3D-Freestle aerobatics with, but they do fly sweetly, just have to be carefull not to rip out the landing gear, it dosnt like hard landings.
As far as the Magnum 91 4Stroke, dont know much about them.
What part of Cape Town you in? I want to go out to Zeekoe Vlei next week end to maiden My 27% Extra, and probably will take the Funt with.

RE: FUNTANA 40
I have a f-40 and i don't even have un-limited climb with the saito 72 but i am at about 3200 ft so i'm losing about 10% of my power so i'm currently waiting for a saito 100 which should be plenty.

RE: FUNTANA 40
I just got my 40 in today. I've got a OS 61FX for it. I've seen videos of the it with various engines up to a 100 Saito. I was at a field and saw two flying with 60s and I tell you that was enough power to do litteraly ANY thing they wanted to do. I was amazed at the way they flew with the 60. Now, to mod the wing so it flys right.
Could the wing tip be modified to the shape of a stick wing, similar to the big boy?
