RE: Aviation Models/TOC 30% Extra 260 BUILD THREAD
Ditto on the WH Edge 540! I have the V2 also. I started at 6.5 and slowly moved up to 6.0. You may like it back there but 6.0 is a safe bet for a starting CG. Balance the plane dry or it will be tail heavy. First time I did mine 1/2 full and was sorry latter. Plane was really tail heavy. At 6 1/4" dry I can flip it over on it's back hand's off and fly straight and level from one end of the field to the other.
Hey Nonstop, mine pulled to the belly also but I just tweaked the upthrust a little figuring that was the cause. Wanted to balloon up when you backed off the throttle. Haven't flown it since the change. I'll let you know how it works out. How did you adjust your wing incidence?
On the aileron connectors, I have 6" extensions coming out ot the Rx that I connect to the servo extensions in the wings. I then put a Parson's keeper on them to make sure they don't disconnect.

yeah, thats what i have been doing, was just wondering if someone knew of a connect system that connected when you put on the wings. Fishing out the wires from my wing halves and hooking them up. [:'(] just seems like there would be something out there that would mount to the fuselage and match up with a connector on the wing half.

Nothing I've ever seen or heard of. Seems like it would be a little iffy to me. I like my keepers.LOL I suppose you could rig up a couple of Ernst connectors that would work.

Lou,
The wing incidence adjustment is easy if adjusters are installed. With ARFs such as SD Extra, we need to re-locate the locking pin holes on both fuse sides, slightly. Since we are talking about positive 0.5 degree change, the way I do it is to file away material (with a round hand-file) from one side of the hole and fill it with some material in the other. Do it for both holes on one side of the fuse (remove material from the top for the front hole, and from the bottom for the rear hole). I used a Robart angle meter to monitor the progress.
When done with filing, cut some 3/5-ply filler in moon-crescent shape to make now oval-shaped locking pin hole perfectly round. Glue the filler inside each hole with Epoxy. When dry, carefully file more material from the filler so that the hole can just accept the pin. I recall when done all holes are relocated about 1mm up or down.
This sounds complicated but can be done relatively quickly.
Some ARF vendors suggest to remove the inner double-up rings, reshape the locking pin holes, and glue back the double-up rings. I prefer the method described above because it does not weaken the locking hole structure.
See the finished "work".

Sounds simple enough to elongate the holes .040" and reinforce the holes. Hopefully my thrust angle change will do the trick and I won't have to deal with it. I'll let ya know!!!

Okay, Flew the plane twice today with the new thrust settings and I think I've got it nailed. Seems to be right there. Let me know what ya think.

Now you know why Kyle flies so well!!! LOL The trees in front of you are approx 150', the trees off of either end of the runway are 40-50'. Makes it real interesting when you have to drop in three times to land. Over the big trees to over the smaller trees to over the approach. BTW the dirt areas across the runway are 4' scotch broom now.

I'm getting ready to put one of these together and I was wondering the pros and cons of mounting a DA50 onto the firewall vs. using the stand-offs?
Any opinions on this?
Thanks!

The reason I ask is a saw a photo of a 3w mounted this way on page 11.
I have only had a couple gas planes and I had not built one this way nor do I remember seeing one like this before. The photo is what made me ask.

Finished up this plane and put my first flights on it today. All I can say is awesome! I placed my cg at exactly 6 inches back on the wing root and that is perfect for me. The plane will fly our entire field (about 1400 feet) dead level hands off inverted (forget the 45* upline). I do training every week with new pilots and this plane lands very much like a trainer!
After day one there is nothing about this plane not to love. Can't wait to get the da broken in and leaned out...

Put five more flights on today and all I can say is this plane is pure! Right to left knife edge no coupling at all, left to right just a slight amount toward the gear. Programed a hair of of mix and took care of this. BTW: Using a pitts muffler I was able to install the fuel tank in the canister area and put it centered on my 6" cg. Plane doesn't handle any different full or empty.

Vertical center line of my firewall box is a good 1/4" below cl of wing. Should I place the DL-50
on wing line? Actually may not be able to go that far down an engine mounting bolts would be
near bottom of firewall.
Second question. Based on pictures posted, appears that top of firewall box is omitted. Was this
just for show or are pepope actually flying that way? Seems like a lot of torsional ridigity lost.
Thanks, Larry

Larry,
For q1, I placed the engine such that the spinner is centered on the cowl spinner cutout when viewed from the front. The location is reasonabe.
For q2, I installed the top cover. The cover has a square cut out in the center. Install stand-offs is easy through the cutout. I left 3/4" material for each edge of the cover for strength.

Nonstoprc,
Thanks very much for the reply.
I will follow your recommendations, including cutting an access hole
in the top cover..Good point about access to engine/ stand-off mounting
hardware.
This is my first "big" plane, so lots to learn.

Bob
can you tell me what your control surface throws are along with the expo that might be the best mine flies great but snaps so fast its
sometimes uncontrolable. best CG I found is 6 1/8 aft of L.E. Flies inverted with almost no down elev. thanks
