    RE: Nitro Models Extra 330 90 - 63"

Can someone take a picture of the top around the tail area, I want to see where you are cutting your holes/slots for the wires for the pull pull setup on the rudder....

And as stated above, what servos are you guys using for the rudder, elevator, ailerons..... all high torque's BB's?

    Thanks

Here is the spec I'm planning on using...

    Hitec Servos:
    1x 5945MG Elevator
    1x5985MG Rudder
    2x5965MG Ailerons
Possibly 81/85MG for Throttle (not decided yet).

Running off a FLIGHTTECH 8A Regulator F and FLIGHTPOWER EVORX-3000 2S receiver Lipo

Probably overkill, but I plan on being able to use in larger models in the future.

    RE: Nitro Models Extra 330 90 - 63"

I made a mistake with the pull pull...

Don't do what I did.... I tried to guesstimate from the outside and missed twice.... then I looked down the inside of the fuselage towards the tail from the wing area, and saw two little plastic guide tubes poking out of the foam which shapes the spine...just in front of the former at the rear of the fuselage.

On my model these plastic tubes where part obscured by a little rogue foam which is why I didn't see it when I looked first time!! Grrr

A thin piece of metal rod fed down from the root end and (with a bit of fiddling) managed to get into the plastic tubing... a bit more pressure and it nicely punctured the covering.... job done.

    Hope this helps.

Will try and get a picture....

I see them... thanks.... wish they would have made them in black, it would have been easier to see against the white interior of the plane...

    Thanks Again

Webglider - well spotted. I would NEVER have found these. Mine must be either a later or earlier model as my turtle deck is not shaped from foam but is built up balsa. The pull / pull tubes were in the same spot as described though. Keep us informed as you go of anything else you find. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments, sure you would have spotted (eventually)

Anyway thought I would share a few of pictures of the butchery of my model.
(Please excuse the quality of the images, they were taken in a hurry on my phone)

I'm replaced the exisiting undercarriage with one I picked up dirt cheap (from Hanger 9). This solves the clearance issue.... 8inches now
In order to keep this simple I drilled some extra holes and mounted the captive nuts from the other side.
    Pics 1 and 2.

I am a bit concerned about the strength of the plate which the undercarriage mounts to, so may add a little glass cloth and epoxy.

Still need to take out a bit of the rear former behind the undercarriage out and fix the pipe in place.
Then I need to build a housing to prevent fuel ingress into the undercarriage area, going to be a bit fiddly, and I'm hoping I'm not going to be adding too much weight!
    Pic 3.

    Time will tell....

For those of you with this model, I suggest using this to determin CG and balancing the plane....

Using this calculator to determine the CG of this plane (with a static margin of 10%) gives you a measurement of 125.7cm back from the leading edge - compared to 127cm in the manual. This will make the plane slightly nose heavy, which will be perfect for my maiden tomorrow It's nice to know that the manual and calc come in at roughly the same figure.

Had the all important maiden today. With a few clicks of up trim she was flying hands off. The ASP 120FS provides plenty of power and seems a good match. Snaps were crisp and and loops and rolls were axial. The only concern was the flexing of the wings when going through and recovering from tight spins. I'm not sure if the flex is from the weak looking wing tube or the wings themselves. Has anybody else that has flow this plane noticed this?. I've now inserted another rod down the guts of the original wing tube to help reduce the flex - if that's were it's from. Overall the plane flew great with no bad vises found yet. If it shapes up over the next few flights to be a keeper then I'll think about getting another one as a spare while the price is right.

Update. Took the plane out for another couple of spins. The alloy tube down the centre of the supplied wing tube seemed to work O/K but I was reluctant to throw it around too much without a spotter with me. I'm really happy with the end result of this build. The plane looks great and attracts plenty of attention, I just hope the wings don't fold. I may also have to apply a washer or two of down thrust and she wants to climp out under full throttle.

Hey Guys, any updates on this plane? I've got one waiting on a backordered engine and was wondering how everyones planes have been holding up and also any advice on what to reinforce and what to not worry about.... I'm amazed at how light this thing is.

I recently brought and built this plane. The motor I have on the plane is a OS 91FX that I had on a Fliton Edge 540 freestyle. I could 3d the heck out that plane, so I expect it to do the same on the NP Extra 330l......they are roughly the same weight, but the Extra has more wing area. I am waiting on a nice warm day here in GA to fly it. flight report and pictures will come soon!!

Not sure if anyone looks at this thread any more, but i thought I would pass on the maiden flight report. One thing I can say is, this plane does not fly well too tail heavy. I was VERY VERY twitchy. I added two oz. of lead to the firewall area to get it to balance right at 127mm. I'll report back once I fly it again at that setting. The os91fx shoots this airplane verticle like a rocket!!!

Derek, 127mm is what the manual says to balance it at, where did yours balance for the maiden?

Also, what do you think about the 4 cm throw on the ailerons? that seems like a lot of throw for such big ailerons...

I still haven't had time to get mine together, but I'm struggling with trying to straightn out the right aileron's warp... sighting down it it looks lie a "W"... so I guess I'll have to wrinkle some moreof the covering trying to straighten it out.

As stated in the manual - 127mm is the best starting point. That's about where mine is and it flies fine. Flhyr, reduce the throws to half of that for your maiden. Also, keep the elevator throws to a minimal to reduce the "twitchyness". Once set up correctly, this is a fine flying plane that will perform all that you ask of it.

Pete and bjor, I added about 2 oz of lead and slid the battery as far forward as I could to get the plane to balance at the 127mm mark. The maiden was flown at about 124mm. The second flight was much much better! She balances and flys fine now. I do also think I have too much elevator throw, but not the ailerons, I love all that extra throw there and that doesn't seem to bother me at at all. So far the plane feels more pattern than 3d though..... we'll see this spring when i start flying it more. The right warped wing thing sucks!! Have them give you another one.

Na... its my fault, I think I warped it while trying to tighten the covering. I already glued it on the wing, but I'm pretty confident that I can straghten it out by re-shrinking the covering again (of course then a whole bunch of wrinkles will show up but I'm planning on re-covering it sometime anyway)

I'm planning on putting a ST .75 on it, so I won't have as much power as you but I think that should be enough. Unfortunatly its on backorder till mid February so I won't have a flying update on it till then.

How fast is your roll rate at 4cm of aileron throw?

Which hangar 9 undercarrsge did you use? I've a saito 125 in my fliton extra and ground clearande is minimal. Presumably holes need to be drilled in the undercarragefor it to fit the existing blind nuts but does the airframe need to be modified?

I'm trying to post some pictures of my ST75 in the extra, but since I've never posted pics before, I'm not sure whats going to happen.

Exellent,, I guess it worked. Notice that I had to puchase a custom bisson inverted muffler to keep the installation clean. (the standard inverted muffler they sell won't fit)
