I was given a link to this thread by another member, boy am I glad! I just purchased the newest version of this plane about 2 weeks ago. I'm going in a different direction though. I have converted mine to electric power, using an E-flite power 60, 15x10 prop (just for now, until I get all the bugs worked out), 3s1p 2650ma x2 LiPo's in series. After installing all the electronics, rx battery and ESC in the front, it only took 1 oz in front to balance at 127mm. As this is a conversion from scratch, (the plane comes with no provisions for electric), My first maiden flight was a little sketchy. I had about 2 degrees too much downward thrust angle, so when I let off throttle, it climbed drastically. I have readjusted the thrust angle a bit, and will most likely try another flight this weekend, weather permitting.
I had to cut the original built-in plywood mounting surface off, and attach an aluminum adjustable motor mount. This is where the thrust angle problems are coming from, as the ply mount had all the angles built in.
I will say, there are a few things that are pretty crappy about this plane, but overall, I got mine for 124.99 + 22.00 SH, I'm very impressed so far.
The elevator rod/dowel setup is crap. I took a square of light ply, drilled a hole in it to fit the dowel, and glued it midpoint in the fuse to minimize dowel deflection. This reduced the side to side movement and the flutter of the elevator halves. I will eventually switch to the bellcrank setup noted earlier in this thread.
I am looking forward to getting this thing up and see what it can do!!

Well, the Extra flew today!!!! It actually flies quite stable after it's trimmed out. I got 2 decent flights out of it today, and both landings were like butter. The Power 60 has plenty of power, I never needed to go past half throttle during the flights. Into a 10mph wind, was rock solid, I couldn't even tell it was breezy.

I will get some pics of the conversion up as soon as I get a chance.

Maiden accomplished!

Had the maiden flight yesterday and aside from needing about4 cicks of up and about 5 clicks of left, all went very smooth.

I had tuned my ST75 to give only around 11100 RPM with a 13X6 prop, keeping it pretty rich since its only got about 5 tanks through it, and this appeared to give the plane enough power to fly just fine, and when holding it vertical at full throttle, it was pulling upward so Ibelieve that once the engine is broken in and I lean it out and get the correct size prop on it, this will be a more than enough power for the plane.

Takeoff was pretty straighforward although with very little weight on the tail wheel and an enourmous rudder, the 5 mph crosswind forced me to really stay on top of the rudder to keep it pointed down the runway. And as soon as it lifted off, it wanted to bank right, not horrible but more than Iwould have expected. Not to worry, I was on top of it and completed a circuit without a problem before Icould get my fingers on the trims.

After it was trimmed, there really were no surprises.Speed was about what you would expect, and the throws given in the manual are dead right(at least for me) even though you would think that the aileron throw recommended would do blistering rolls, it was not twitchy at all-Maybe because of hte 20% differential Ihave in it. I purposely balanced it a bit nose heavy but Isee now that this precaution was not necessary.

Actually there was one surpise,,,, itis a lot easier to land than Ithought it would be. It slows down nice, and maintains level wings better than my ultrasport. You want to keep just a hair of speed because once it settles in on landing, it sinks faster and slows down faster than anticipated but it sure made some really beautifull landings- greased'em in just perfect. Definetly don't need to change the landing gear (of course it was pretty calm when I flew so that probably helped alot)

As Istated earlier, the engine is still breaking in so Ididn't do much in the way of aerobatics, just a few rolls and some knife edge. The rolls to the right are pretty nice, but to the left they are noticably slower. Knife edge was not to impressive. Although the rudder is huge, I found myself wanting more rudder after the stick was maxed out and there is a fair amount of roll coupling and a bit of pitch coupling as well, but nothing a little computer mixing cant fix. Maybe Ineed a stronger servo but I'm running the 3151's at 6V wich should be plenty right?

I've seen some people post that these planes fly like a pattern bird, while I haven't flown a pattern bird, I'm not sure that mine flies like one, the wings tend to wander just a bit in straight and level flight, forcing you to make small corrections much like with my US40.

I had many problems trying to keep oil out of the fuel tank area. I finally used caulk to seal all the openings and had to add a wall of balsa directly behind the engine to keep the oil from getting to the main firewall which seems to help, but with the throttle servo right in front of the firewall, and having the hole for the servo leads inadequately plugged, Istill have some oil under the tank. Anyone else have this issue?

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied.It's nothing to jump up and down about but I may change my tune when the engine gets more broken in and Ican throw the plane around more.

Hey, where did you guys put your throttle servo? I had put mine right in front of the firewall, but found that it had stopped working after 3 flights. I can only guess that it died because of the vibration and all the oil that accumulated on the servo.

Any thoughts?

Hello everyone! It's me again. I just wanted to give everyone an update on this plane. I know I started this thread almost 2.5 years ago. I flew this plane for a year and a half non stop. So now I can give an over all opinion. Unfortunately I crashed the plane a year ago noing some 1-3 ft high rolling hariers. I FLEW THE CRAP OUT OF THIS PLANE!!!!!!! ANd out of all planes I ahve owned I would say I got my money out of this plane 10 times over lol!!!!

Shortly after I built this plane I moved to orlando fl. So I went from 5000ft to seal level. Boy did this plane wake up!! I found that with an apc 14x4w prop the flight characteristics improved alot. Large increase in thrust. And the tendicy to snap out of a slow pop up was gone. I must have done hundreds of tail touches. Lots of low inverted harriers. some so low that it landed upside down in the middle of the runway! This plane had so many battle scars it was rediculous. But it just flew so well. So I would say this plane with my motor servo comination was exceptional. After hundreds of flights my only complaints is the covering. Once it starts getting fuel on it it peals off. I was flying with no covering on some parts. just wood And almost all the trim came off. The other sugestion is if you use the cs 12 micro servos get a metal gear set. Never stripped in the air but if it was bumped on the ground they stripped. Must of replaced the gears 20 times. But I did't care. Just kept flying lol.

Over all!!! This is a great Economy plane to fly 3d. With the set up I used don't think it get's any better for the dollar spent [8D]

On a side note I just purchased an extreme flight 58" extra 300. It is a great plane. Better than the nitro models in my opinion, but slightly. It is just funny to me that this little economy plane has become a benchmark that I compare my other planes to now. maybe I'm biased lol!

Can you tell me how the GMS engine worked out? Is this the engine you kept in the plane?

Reason I ask is that the Super Tiger .75 motor I have in mine is pathetic. will only turn a 12-6 at 11000 rpm, so I am thinking of changing the motor either to a S/T 90 or maybe a thunder tiger .90.

The gms .76 was pheonominal! At first i was using 13x6 wood zinger and thrust was marginal at best. Just enough to hover with slow pull out. Then I switched to a apc 14x4w. I thought it was too much prop, but turns out it was perfect match. Verticle was unlimited with strong pull out. hovered at half throttle. I would highly recomend it. Give good break in and run 15% nitro and you'll be fine. Had smooth idle perfect transition. After it broke in never had a single dead stick and I flew some very agressive 3d manuvers

I dont think that you could fit the right size prop for a gasser
