Go gas. Brew your own cheap fuel. Only
downside is that gas smell.

I have the DP Extra (which I assume is much like the Edge) and have quite a few flights. The plane is at it's best when it's light and flown slow. Stick with larger dia. low pitch props , keep the speed down and thrust up. Does not need large engines. DP recommends a Moki 1.8 at the max. He knows what he speaks of. I personally think the Moki is a little heavy and would prefer a lighter engine. It flies VERY well but is designed for 3D (i.e. built Light(weak ( don't crash)),Larger control surfaces (i.e. flutter ( don't fly fast and use full power only when going vertical,(UP))) and uses smaller lighter engines ( if you must have gas get another plane). I have just purchased a YS 140 DZ which I expect will be perfect for it. The DP planes are the best, just be gentile. BTW if you don't know how to land, the landing gear will bend/break pretty easily, it's light also. If you can't tell, I think in this size range there is nothing to compare it to in a ARF.

I seriously considering getting this plane. I have all radio gear except 1 servo. I just need to descide on a power plant. I saw MECAM performance with a 2.1 moki on His DP extra, and supposely this edge it lighter.

As for the power plant, I would have to buy it. I would have to buy either moki at full price. As for a gas engine, I am sure I can find a good used 3W from friends for about 1/2 the price of a new one.

But I do have a Saito 180 that I can use. I just acquired a H9 with a Saito 180 in it. I guess i will have to wait to see what everybody uses and like, and then make up my mind.

What about a Saito 180 for this plane.

When I talked to Dave Patrick on the phone, he tried to convince me to use my YS140L which has very similar power to the Saito 180. His reasoning was that if you build the plane light--ie: Use 2 aileron servos, the single pull-pull elevator, and a lightweight battery like a Lithium-Ion as well as a simple muffler or straight exhaust-- this would then result in an Edge weighing just over 12 1/2 lbs! Sounds great, but I ended up going with gas on mine. I'm putting in my Brison 2.4 which will swing a 20x8 prop at over 7000 rpm and weighs only a slight bit more than a Moki 1.80 once you add in the muffler and the larger fuel supply that the Moki requires. The thought of messy, nasty glowfuel dripping off that beautiful plane convinced me to go with gas.

You guys putting gas on yours keep updates please. Especially how it flies with the extra weight. I am interested in this plane and would too be putting a gasser on it if/when I buy it.

Thanks

A good 40-50cc gasser doesn't weigh much more than the Moki 1.8, and you can almost offset the difference by running a smaller gas tank with no loss in endurance. I have a Moki on my DP Extra and it needs all of it to hover. I'd be happier with a gasser.

I have a OS 1.60 on the DP Extra. It works very well. This is a early kit and came in at 13.5 lbs. It will pull it out of a hover reasonably well, certainly enough to keep it safe. I like it. I am about to try a YS 140DZ on it. Check the static thrust and if you can get about a 1.5 thrust/weight it should be all you need. If you aren't into 3D the OS 160 is plenty.

Default ZDZ 40 en Edge540T

rongreg13, do you think that a inverted mounted ZDZ 40 will fit on the Edge without having to cut holes in the cowl?

I think you'll probably have to cut out a bit of the bottom of the cowl for the top of the ZDZ40. Just in case, I've attached a side view with a ruler so you can see for yourself.

Thank you very much. It looks like the cowl is about 5,8 inches from the centerline and the ZDZ 40 is only 5,63 inches.

Why can't manufactures come out with planes that are one solid color? This would make customizing better for everyone.

Built stock 1 servo per aileron, 1 elevator servo, and a OS 160FX. Nothing changed.

Default Questions about DP Edge 540T

Just have a few questions.

1. I noticed that the vert fin is already glued in place, but is there a fairing covering the joint of the vert fin to the fuse like the DP Extra?

2. Is the yellow the same as the extra or is this yellow darker?

3. What size of spinner fits the cowl? From the picture it looks like 4" but the ruler is further into the background. I've got a 3.5" tru turn.

Hope you get to weigh the plane, I really curious about the weight with the 2.4. If I decide on the Edge, I've got a Brison 3.2 ready to go on it.

Thanks,
Doug

I can answer number 3 only as I have the blue version and a BME 50 on it.

The plane takes a 3.5" spinner

Hey X, do you have a pic of yours? Sounds like the plane you have is the one that I want to build!! How does that 50 work on it?

Okay, for some reasons my pictures are not attaching. Anyone who wants to see my Brison 2.4 installation, just click on my gallery (one of the buttons on the bottom of this post). I uploaded a few pics there.

Default Blue Version

My pictures are in in the photo gallery (hit button below)

The BME 50 fit seems to be great. The test will be in the flying which probably won't be for another month or so but based on the fact that my Brison 3.2 flys the crap out of my Cap with unlimited vertical, great snaps, torque rolls, etc at 16.5 lbs! I think this Edge BME 50 combo should be great as long as the light airframe can handle it.

Well, my Edge is finished and ready for its first flight. I'm just waiting for the instrument panels to arrive from DPM and for some of the glue to dry on the canopy. I stuck some pictures in my gallery of the plane as it sits right now. I ended up putting a Brison 2.4 engine swinging a Pro Zinger 20x8 on it. There's a big 24oz fuel tank in it and I'm using a EMS Jomar Glitch Buster system to allow the receiver to work of its own battery and the servos have their own 6 volt NiCad. I have a Hitec mini on the throttle, and the flight controls are all Futaba 9252 digitals running off a MPI 6 volt regulator. I went with the single wing servo option as well as the single elevator servo w/ all pull-pull connections. This has managed to keep the weight very low, although I haven't put it on a scale yet today. I will as soon as I get a chance to. Hopefully the weather will hold out this weekend and I can get a flight or two in. I'm pretty psyched as this looks like it will be a great flier.

I'll be at the field with cameras loaded for this much
anticipated event. Will this be the first one flying?
I try to post some pics from the flying sesh. I'll have
video too but don't think I'll be posting that. Plane
looks great Ron.

Ron,

Do you have a out of the box weight for your new plane?

If it's built light, it might be a good candidtate for Electric Power!
