The SSE is probably the best sport plane ever designed... thats my opinion anyway. It is capable of SOME 3d manouvers but was never designed for it. I have an OS 50sx on mine and get unlimited virtical out of it. It will hover but not stabally enough to try it any lower than 50 ft. I have not modified my tail feathers or CG. A buddy of mine has an os 55ax on his SSE, but I have not seen it fly yet but he reports unlimited virtical...duh but with a 12x6 prop. I told him he needs an APC 13x4 like I use with my .50sx Anyway, you may want to look at the 55AX as an option. I feel it has far better low end grunt than my 50sx as I do have a 55ax in a Funtana 40s.

If all you want to do is hover, the .70 with a 14X4W will do just that. However, if you want stability, look in to a bigger rudder and control surfaces. I have a .70 Surpass on mine and love it. From the time I hit the throttle until it's airborn is about 15 feet. Don't worry about 3D. Just fly the feathers off it!!

I built mine with counter ballanced elevator and rudder I also added 1" to each...... She is fully 3D capable with my upgrades..... Just not sure what I wanna do for power.... I am running a .46 AX with a 12.25x3.75 and getting good hovers... but it lacks the athority to pull out..... I'll prob. just drop a .61 in there.

LOL. Put the Surpass on it with a 14X4W. It'll hover at 1/2 throttle and will HAKE till it runs out of fuel. If you get really adventurous, put an FL .70 on it with a 13X4W. It's only 1.1 ounces heavier than the .46AX The .70 Surpass is a little over 5 ounces heavier

There's a big difference between an FL and a Surpass. 2 of the biggest are the airbleed carb and you can't rotate the carb. Other than that I really like the 2 I have. If your father is an R/C old timer, he'll probably be ready to give it to you. A lot of people don't like them because of the carb and the fact that it's not as strong as a surpass. But, power to weight, the FL can hold its own.

Hey guys. I have a SSE, modified tail feathers, counterbalanced, and more area. I have a Saito 82 on mine, swinging a 15X4 APC. Hovers at half throttle, and is capable of many HA manuevers. My favorite is a the harrier landing. I'm still fooling around with the CG and trying to get it back a bit more. Funnest plane i own.

The FL will run inverted ok. I just put new bearings in mine. I deglazed the sleeve and broke it back in inverted. If you try to run 30% in it, you'll end up replacing the sleeve and piston. I made that mistake. But they're a tough little engine. Kind of like the "LA" series of 4 strokes.
The SSE is a really fun plane. HA's are my fav as well. My kids get a kick out of watching me fly it around the yard on the tail wheel.

I built a SSE before they were ARF's. I greatly enlarged the tail feathers, tried a K&B .48 with a Jet tuned exhaust, an MVVS .49 RE with a mini- pipe & a Saito .72. The MVVS was my favorite. Scarry power and instant throttle response. Moved the weight so far back it climbed when rolled inverted.
Was able to do what I thought was a lot of 3D stuff. Then I tried a Sledge with a Satio 72. That was eight years ago and I never flew the SSE again. It eventually went into the trash can. Modern 3D profiles are just that much better that the SSE for 3D. The SSE is a great sport plane, but no matter what you do to it, it's not a 3D plane. Sorry...
