Default Golden Skies RC - Bampf 3D (Build Thread)

To start off, the plane arrived last week, but I didn't have any time to start the build. With our plane room cleaned of other projects, it was time to start today.
The plane is a very well built airframe that comes with quality hardware. The one thing that impressed me is the craftsmanship of the airframe. I didn't even see one wrinkle in the covering while unpacking the airframe.

If you would like to view more about the plane and manufacture go to .........
[link=http://www.goldenskiesrc.com]GOLDEN SKIES R/C AIRCRAFT[/link]

The first steps were to start on hinging the wings. The type of hinges for the wings are robarts and the easiest for me to put in.
Instead of using epoxy for glue, I used pacer hinge glue because I have had good luck with that before and it sets up faster than epoxy.

The basic steps were necessary for hinging.
1st. Clean hinges with alcohol
2nd. Vaseline the hinge knuckles so they don't glue
3rd. apply glue to holes and hinge posts
4th. install in wings and align so surface moves properly.

Here are some pictures of the plane from unpacking to finishing the hinging for the wings......

Here are more pictures of what you get in the box. The canopy was already installed on the fuse and the cowl is very interesting in design. Everything is of great quality.....

The next step was the wings. I used 30min. Epoxy to join the wing halfs and also dimpled the wood with a screwdriver to assure a stronger glue joint.
After the Epoxy cured, the clamps came off and it was time to test fit inside the wing saddle.
Next, I test fit the belly pan and marked out where the wing bolt plate & belly pan needed to be glued. I didn't attach those yet because it isn't anything structural that needs to be glued on like the tail.
Then I got the HS out and aligned it to the fuse to mark. The next step was to dimple with a screwdriver so glue would bight better to the joint.

Well today when I got home from school, I worked on the Bampf for about 2 hours and got the tail assembly glued in with 30min. epoxy.
I have to wait on servos for the plane to start putting in control horns on surfaces.
I am going to use Radio South 1/4scale hinges for the tail instead of the regular hinges they give you with the plane.
Can't start on the front with engine mounting because I don't know if my dad is getting a new GMS-120 or if I'm going to use the Moki 135.

Tonight I got a little more done on the plane. I test fit the surfaces and hinged them. I used radio south 1/4-scale hinges and just thin CA glue. They were a perfect fit. The plane is starting to look great as parts are going together.
All the servos, receiver, battery, etc. were purchased today, so I will get a picture of the spread up on here soon.
Here are some pictures of the test fit and final look.....

Darn nice job so far. Nice, clear and FOCUSED pictures. It's nice to see nice attention to detail. Very interested to hear how this one flies.

Today I got a lot done on the Bampf. The wing is almost done except for gluing on the belly pan and installing the control horns on ailerons.
The servos that I'm using are ST126mg's for all surfaces and a ST47bb on throttle.
Dad and I also decided on a motor for the plane. It was a OS-108FX 2cycle.
All the reviews are great on the motor and it's only a couple of ounces heaver than the 4stroke recommended in the book.
The main things I got done tonight were making the blocks for servo mounting. Making the servo plates for installation in wing. Then finishing up all servo wiring running through the wing.
So far this plane is a breeze to build and is very easy. It's taking me a bit to build because school gets in the way. Plus flying on weekends.

I got a little more done tonight. The horns were installed on the ailerons and linkages were used for mach up. I need to get bigger servo arms for the wings.
I started on the fuse installing the servos. Both the elevator servos were installed with 24in. extensions running in the fuse. I also installed the throttle servo temporarily.
I still have more work to do tonight. I plan to get the engine mounted and maybe get the gas tank put together.
Here are some pictures of what's done so far.....

Last night I finally got the engine all mounted up and ready for final instillation.
The top mount required some modification around the top right. So I just used the sanding block to shape it round.
Second I clamped the engine in place with 5-5/8in. from fire wall to spinner back plate. After it was in place I marked it and drilled it on the drill press.

Also, another great product that Golden Skies RC produces is their wheels and spinners. Top quality all the way....

I installed the horns for the elevators and adjusted the linkages tonight. I spent a little time mixing the 2 channels together, but it works great.

Even though the muffler didn't work out, the building is still in progress.
The engine was fixed to the plane again and the cowl was trimmed to fit perfectly. The plane is starting to take shape.....

I am going to exchange it with my LHS on Monday. Hopefully they will have one that put together the right way.
I am going to work on it more tonight after dinner.

That's what I'm hoping for. Great job on your build. This is the sturdiest built plane I have ever seen.

I have the CrossFire built and ready for it's maiden flight. (91OS 2s). One of the best aircraft I have seen in my 40 years of building.
But.... Didn't like the instructions given for balance. "So many inches back from the firewall". Please give me so many inches back from the leading edge. That's the way my balance machine works. I'm old and stuck in my way. Now with that said. If that's all I can find wrong, I would say they build a wonderful aircraft. Hinges scared me, but the trick really is in the glue. Remember, I cut my hinges out of cloth back when.
Blue skies and happy landings!![8D]
