Default Engine size for a Twist 40

I was just wondering if a Evolution trainer engine its about a .45 engine would be enough to start learning aerobatics and 3D in the twist 40. Or should I go with a O.S. 55 or something in that size? The reason I ask about the EVO trainer engine is because I have one lying around not being used and would like to either use it or sell it.

I flew my Twist for years with an OS .46 AX and it would easily pull out of a hover. An OS .55 AX would even be better.

The Evo NT (Trainer engine) will fly it if you are limiting the budget. It won't have "unlimited vertical" but it will be adequate to get going. Remove the "flywheel" (the weighted ring on the front of the crank) and install a fine pitch prop (something like a 12/4) and you'll have fun.
The "Plug'n'Play" version I bought had an evolution 46 in it and it was ok.

If the budget allows for something like a 55AX - do it - it will transform the plane into a "monster fun flyer" and you'll have a good engine for future projects when you outgrow (or "Regrow") the Twist.

Do you already have the plane? There may be better choices out there (That's always a subject of great debate).

I'm using an OS46 with APC 12.5 X 3.75. Leaves the runway in about 10', pull verticle and it climbs right out of sight. The 46 will climb out of hover, but I had a 55 ringed on the last one and it shot out of a hover with the same 12.5X3.75. You won't be disapointed by either.

Guys:
looking back at the 150's picture reminded me that I used a brass spiner on the OS55 to balance also. This time I used one of the small 5 cell (6 V) NiMH 1200mah and was able to pack it up under the fuel tank and balanced without any additional weight.

TwisT 40 With OS .61FX macs Tuned Pipe. I would say this is the largest engine the plane will handle and the most expensive engine to mount in this plane. But has major power and speed. there is a thread dedicated to this plane with tons of information on different setups.

Well after 632 flights on TWO OS46ax motors,
I am installing a 55ax to get things moving again...

Not sure how much longer the little plane will
hold together... It is my trusty back up plane...

Thanks for all the Info. I think I will start with the EVO NT for now and see how I like it and upgrade to the O.S. 55 later, and I was planing on getting rid of the weighted fly wheel. I already do have the twist and it is almost ready for flight I think all I have to finish is the RX, battery and finish the engine install which includes putting the spinner on and the canopy. It should be ready for flight by Sunday. One last thing for now, I will be using a Spektrum radio where did you mount the second receiver? I was thinking about drilling a small hole under the canopy and mounting it there but was not sure if there is a better place.

Thanks again for all your help.

Just a quick update on this thread. I finally got the O.S.55 engine for my Twist. Wow what a difference the engine makes! The plane went from mild to a very quick and capable 3D trainer that I can pull out of a well not really a hover yet but it will pull out vertical which is more than I can say for the Evo Nt. I was flying straight and level full throttle the other day and the plane handles much better than it did with the other engine, but will that cause damage to the plane? I read somewhere that this kind of plane was not meant for that but can't see how it could damage it.

I have seen this particular model survive some very serious abuse. A buddy of mine had one with a .46AX and it had insane vertical and he flew it HARD! This may not be the best 3D plane in the world but it is blast to fly and hands down one of the best sport models on the market. If I were you I would not worry to much about the excess speed. From what I have seen you will be just fine.

TruBlu

Thanks for the info the plane does seem tough enough to take some speed but just wanted to check.

I had an evolution .46 in mine and it just wasn't enough motor to hover with, so I installed a magnum 70xl four stroke in mine and it flies great and with more than enough power

I've been running an OS 70 4 stroke with an APC 13x4W for a couple years in mine , and it works fantastic . No shortage of power for pull-outs or vertical , and the small pitch prop allows for wide-open flybys without any flutter . Great combination .
