Default Saito 100 with 30% Nitro

Hi Guys
I need some advice, I run a Saito 100 in my Fliton Extra 330 Freestyle.
I use an APC 15X6 on 15% with a Saito plug and am getting 9400 rpm.
I know it sounds greedy but I’d like to see if I can get a bit more power.
How much of an increase in RPM do you think I could get if I switch to 30%?
My thoughts are that if I can get another 3 or 400 RPM I could use a bigger prop, maybe a 16X4W. I know that will drop the RPM again but hopefully no lower than 9300 or 9400 I started with.
Also is it worthwhile changing to an OS F type plug?
Someone did suggest I may get a problem with pre ignition on 30% and I should use a cooler plug, any views on this would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Don

I ran 30 percent and the OS F plug on mine, as for numbers difference I really can't say because I never ran it on anything but helicopter fuel as thats all I bring to the field.

I have the same plane, engine and prop, going to maiden her today on 30% FYI. I do have 2 other birds running Saito 100's and I run 30% exclusively, it loves it. 20% if that all the Hobby Shop has. Anything less and I dont fly.

The other birds run a 14x6 to 14x8 @ around 10.8k on 30%. Flawless. All standard Saito plugs.

Hey Patrick
Good luck with the maiden, you'll love the extra, and thanks for the info, what do you think about the 16X4W prop?

After reviewing the uh, crash damage........I was running a 15x4 wide on the maiden. I tested it at a little over 3/4 throttle with the plane inverted in my hands to test any fuel delivery issues and it was very light!. It will hang on that prop easy. I did buy the 16x4 wide but i dont think I need it. Tached at about 9800 on the 30%

Anyway its in one piece. I just did not mount the tank well enough and it came out in flight through the magnetically secured hatch. Dead sticked and pancaked the aluminum gear. No balsa damage thankfully. The thing was really pitchy on the elevator at low rate. Elevator travel I guess at 1.5"? Fealt really tail heavy too (before I jettisoned the tank). Funny...I CG'd it 125mm which is the going measurement according to RCU trollers. This is my first non-foamy acro plane so I'm not sure what to expect from a 60 size 330. Are you running a perry pump on yours? Sorry to change topic.

Hi Patrick
Glad to hear it’s all in one piece.
I’ve got a 15X4W that I’m going to try this week end.
Hopefully I’ll get about the same 9800 you did with the 30%.
I lost my hatch (held on with magnets) on the first snap!
Luckily I used some cable ties to hold the tank in.
I thought of bigger magnets, too much weight, so I just use some sticky tape.
I think most guys have used carbon U/C it’s heavier but much stronger and a little taller.
I think 1inch is probably enough for low rate on the elevator, and I like about 30% expo.
Your CG should be OK at 125mm I think mine is at about 130mm and its hands off inverted.
I’ve got the Saito inverted and a 12oz Dubro tank back to the wing tube, and use a Cline regulator, no fuel issues!
Hope you get yours back in the air soon.

Don

I have a Saito 100 and 125 and 30% is all that I use. Trust me, there is a big difference. I'm using a 15x4 on the 100 and a 16x4 on the 125. Only issue is the extra oil mess.

Did you nitro addicts hear that China is closing the nitro factory we get most of our supply from for several months to clean up the air for the Olympics? I just read about it in another forum.

Yea both our planes almost exactly the same exept the pump. I did not put any expo on low rate travel and probably should. I dont know about the carbon gear. I dont thing my underbelly would have survived if the aluminum did not give like it did.

Anyway back to topic, 20% is minimum nitro for me. And 30% it really sings. Really, at my local shops its only $3 more than the 15% at $21 to $23 gallon.

If you don't mind spending money on the fuel, a 16x4w with 30% is the hardest pulling combo i have found

Thanks guys for the info on the props and fuel.
I'm going to try the 15X4W this weekend and see how it goes.
The APC props are like $30 here in the UK, so if I don't really need it I can put that money towards my next plane [8D]

Patrick It's no wonder you found it pitchy with 11/2 inches and no expo on the elevators

Don
