Default Roll rate and aileron travel question

I have noticed something while flying my Fliton Extra 330 Freestyle and would like your thoughts. There is very little if any difference in roll rate between low and high rates on the ailerons. I have the low rates set-up for what I would call aerobatic flying and the high rates set-up for 3D flying. The low rates are still pretty aggressive but the high rates are 50% more than the low rates. It is not that the roll rate is slow, quite the opposite, it just does not change from low rate to high rate.

I am not really sure I have never measured it but if I were to guess I would say 40 degrees low and 80 degrees high. On high rates the aileron is almost perpendicular to the wing.

wow i was expecting you to say maybe 20-25 degress for low and about 40-45 degress for 3d rate....

80 degress may be acting like a brake speed brake that is......

Yea, it is a lot of throw but it helps in stalled flight. I just set it up with the maximum amount of throw for 3D and with this Extra you can get a lot of throw! Maybe backing down on the aileron travel would be a good idea?

I wonder if your servos are stout enough? My first H9 Funtana would roll faster at 1/2 throttle then it would at full throttle. The aile servos were not holding the large amount of deflection with the higher airspeed. Better servos cured this little problem.

You may have a point David. I am using Hitec 425BB on 6v for the ailerons. This is a light plane, 6.2lbs powered by a .82 Saito, but it does have huge control surfaces. I guess the only way to find out is replace the servos with stronger ones?

40 degrees on low rates is pretty high. 15-20 is normal for low rates, 40+ for high rates. You can really get 80 degrees on your Fliton? I'm pushing 50-60 degrees on my profiles and that's a lot. IMHO I think you go much past that and your losing efficiency on the control surface and turning it into a brake.

80 degreess may be what his eyes say i have a degree meter and need to see what i can get on mine with i think 1 to 1.25" arms. i would guess about 50 is the most i could get but i know i only fly with 40-45 at most on my 3d ailerons.

Blazer1, Several people told me it was overkill to put a 99oz servo on a 40 size plane. Maybe so, but the plane performed much better. The roll rate on this thing is unreal. BTW I used Futaba 3305s. These are a metal gear servos with 99oz on 4.8v and 132oz on a 6v. The run about $35 each. Not cheap but not bad for what you are getting. I would never use them in a patter ship, but for banging a 3Der around they are perfect.

I am probably way off on the amount of throw, 80 degrees does sound like a lot! The only thing that is really important is that I have almost double the amount of travel from low to high rates but not even a noticeable increase in roll rate.
