Default 46% Giles Rebuild progress

Thought I would share with you guys my winter project. It was a 46% Giles that a fellow club member owned until late this summer. He experienced a Flame out on initial climb out after take off. He unforutnaly put it in nose first and well..................now I own it. Let me know what you think of the rebuild.

so far the rebuild looks very clean. I like it alot! The Giles is like a step child, either you love it or you hate. I have one and I LOVE IT!

keep us updated with your progress, I'd love to see the finished product. Never seen a Giant scale Giles before [X(]

This is actaully one of a very few framed up by Frank Knoll and I believe one other person around 1997.......I think. I can never remember the history behind it. Anyways...............It supposed to be one of around 10 that were made to compete in TOC. I'm not too sure on how many still fly though. I've attached a pic that I found on the internet of Frank Knoll with one of the originals in '97.

Here's a picture of the power plant I selected.

3W TOC 160B4 I think it'll do the job.

Well guys,

Made some more progress today with the help of one of my flying buddies. The wings were finally mated with the fuse today. Slowly but surely it's coming together. And yes that ugly covering will be stripped.

Hello Neo:

What you have done so far looks pretty darn good. However with that big ol'e motor I have only 1 concern. I don't feel comfortable with the joint on the lower left stringer. The way you joined it has me worried. What I would have done is cut the stringer at a 45 degree angle and the extension as well. This gives you a significantly longer and stronger joint. Being as it is aready installed. I would box the joint with some plywood. Say 1/16 or slightly bigger with epoxy as the glue. I'm afraid of all the torque that motor is gonna make. I wish you well on your project. Oh yea just a thought. I am not familiar with the innards around the joints but how about boxing it with 1/8 lite ply? It would significantly strengthen the nose. It is just a suggestion.

Hello again Neo:

I took a real good look at the pictures you posted. With the wings on it is hard to tell. But after taking a long hard look at the pictures I am more convinced that you need to address the structure some. After the last former where you have the sub spars in the nose the whole load of the tail bending moment will be taken up by the 4 stringers and the side sheeting. Being as the sheeting has been patched you are going to create a stress point right at the joint. I would put at least some reinforcement verticly inside the structure to help take the load. I would try to go back beyond the sheeting you have left to start. I would hate to see this nice plane fail due to insufficient structure. The additional weight would be negligable on this plane. I will admit to not having built any real big planes like this one. But I do have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and I am just worried. Call me a nervous nellie. As befor best of luck and you are doing a nice job.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the interest and the heads up. I haven't updated this thread in a while......but I have made some progress. The joint on the stringer which you are referring to is actually cut at a 45 degree angle and is supported by1/8 spruce on three of the four sides. After the framing of the fuse was done I was still worried about the rigidity of it and added 1/8 ply between the 3rd 4th and 5th formers. This locked the fuse in and the flex is nearly all gone. After final sheeting.....it'll be good to go. Here's a few more pics of my work. I know I most likely don't need to use exoxy in all the recent construction...but in high stress area....i felt it was necessary. I take the extra bit of weight for my own assurance. Thanks again for the heads up. Any other comments....let hear them........I'm always up for CONSTRUCTIVE critisism.

man that thing is starting too like a winner again! Nice work and yes I had to agree with the previous comments of some of th structure reinforcement. I would hate to see a failure in flight

The engine is a monster and should pull it along niceley. More pics!!!

Any ideas on a scheme for it yet?

I think I've got the structural issue taken care of with the ply bracing that was added. As far as a covering scheme goes.........I haven't got the foggiest how I'm going to do it up. I open to suggestions.........I'm not the most creative person when it comes to that kind of stuff. Give me some ideas.

Got a little more doen this weekend. I know I'm a slow builder. But here's a assembled pic. Also a picture of the servo tray I'm engineering. It' not done yet........and yes I know it's not structurally sound..............yet. If anyone has a idea for a covering scheme..........send it my way. That's all for now,

Got some more work done today. The cowling has been rejoined with the fuse. Even though it doesn't line up as good as I like.......it good enough to work with. Anyone have any tips on repairing a cracked fiberglass cowling?

Actaully.......yes he his a older gentleman by the name of Ray Myers. He travels west during the winter months here in ohio so that he can fly year round. I kinda liked the old scheme...........but it was so faded from years of flying............it had to go. I think I'm gonna duplicate the RedBull Edge that's currently flying. Thanks for the good words.....and yes it has been a lot of work.

Dang very cool, yeah that plane flew awesome! I remember he had the P Tip prop (sp?) all carbon fiber and actually would change pitch in the air, prop was like $300 LOL! Anyways, very nice, keep up the good work.
